Is there a way, besides RHODES SCHOLARSHIP, for a US res to go to a UK uni (grad/post-grad) for a low cost?
I graduated my university with a high GPA and honors, but am doubtful there are enough scholarships available to really make them affordable. Hoping someone has gone through this before and can share their experience. Also wondering what sort of loans are available, though I can probably find that info on my own.
Answer: hardly any. as uk dont give out to americans or those from developed countries. u can try american foundations to sponsor your studies eg rand corp, ford foundation etc. some maybe generous enough to sponsor. nothing venture nothing gain.

What is the criteria for a Us student to get a RHODES SCHOLARSHIP to Oxford Univ.?
Who makes the selection?
Answer: Mr. Rhodes’ Will contains four criteria by which prospective Rhodes Scholars are to be selected:
1 literary and scholastic attainments;
2 energy to use one’s talents to the full, as exemplified by fondness for and success in sports;
3 truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship;
4 moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one’s fellow beings.
The American Secretary of the Rhodes Trust administers all aspects of the Rhodes scholarships in the United States. On behalf of the Rhodes Trustees in England, he determines the rules and procedures of the competition, advises colleges and universities, selects all selection committee members, interprets Trust policies and selection criteria for Americans, and advises Rhodes Scholars-elect. The current American Secretary is Elliot F. Gerson. The Rhodes Trustees have designated officers in other countries with Rhodes scholarships who have similar responsibilities.

What are the picking criteria for someone to win a RHODES SCHOLARSHIP?
Answer: The critera which Mr. Rhodes set forth in his Will still guide Committees of Selection in
their assessment of applicants. The Will contains four standards by which prospective
Rhodes Scholars should be judged:
(1) literary and scholastic attainments;
(2) energy to use one’s talents to the full, as exemplified by fondness for and success
in sports;
(3) truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak,
kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship;
(4) moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one’s
fellow beings.
Underlying these standards is the aim that Scholars be physically, intellectually, and
morally capable of leadership, that is, persons who, in Mr. Rhodes’ phrase, will “esteem
the performance of public duties as [their] highest aim.” From this statement one may
infer that he expected his Scholars to play an influential part in the betterment of society,
wherever their careers might lead them.
Much of the distinctiveness of the Rhodes scholarships stems from this
comprehensive set of criteria. Intellectual excellence is obviously required, but not in
isolation from other qualities. Mr. Rhodes sought Scholars who were more than “mere
bookworms;” he wanted their intellectual talents to be combined with concern for others.
Thus, the Selection Committees assign the highest importance to this blend of character
with intellect.
Because Rhodes Scholars are selected for their potential over a lifetime, importance is
properly attached to their capacity to meet the demands for physical fitness imposed by an
active career. Satisfying the second standard does not require evidence of outstanding
achievement in organized sports. All applicants, however, should be able to demonstrate
the physical vigor which will enable them to make an effective contribution to the world
around them. Moreover, American and other foreign students who are prepared to
participate in sports played in the English amateur tradition have typically derived
additional benefits from their Oxford experience. Many lifetime international friendships
have been formed as by-products of the athletic competition among Oxford’s colleges.

Is it possible to enroll in the University of Oxford without the RHODES SCHOLARSHIP,if youre from the U.S.A?
Im just curious,Oxford does seem as a school that is very difficult to get in to.. For people from the U.S.A, is it possible to enroll in it with just relying on its financial aid. Does it even have financial aid? Thank You!:)
Answer: As an American currently at Oxford I can tell you it is possible to enroll without the Rhodes as I am not a Rhodes Scholar. I am getting my second masters here and in neither program has there been an American Rhodes my year. The Rhodes make up a very, very small amount of the number of students here much less the American ones. If you're a graduate, apply to the program first and then select a college; for the undergrads it's pretty much the opposite, in choosing your college first then program.
The unfortunate truth is that as American you are far, far less likely to receive financial aid than anyone else. British laws keep a ceiling on how much the University can charge UK citizens, while foreign students from the rest of the world pay about four times more in tuition alone. Thus if you look at the regional breakdown of accepted students, it's why many graduate programs have far more non-UK students. As for financial aid, it come mostly through the colleges (which I would read up on before applying) or the program or grants, rarely will it come from the University. More than any American school, Oxford is a confederation of colleges and departments than a strong central university.
Due to the current economic climate, and the low donation rate compared to US universities, I would guess you are not likely to get financial aid here like you might be accustomed to. I'd suggest research grants, foundations, charities, or student loans.

i know one must be under 24 and have a bachelors degree by the time they enter oxford, but i thought i read somewhere that you cant have a masters or anything above a bachelors to apply. but ive read about rhodes scholars who will pursue doctorates, meaning they must be in their first or second year of grad school and will advance to oxford after they receive their masters. so can anyone help me out with this? can you have a degree above a bachelors?
thanks
I know all of that, but I also know that you dont have to go to an elite university. Sure, the majority of Rhodes scholars come from heavy hitters, but if you would take a look at current and past winners lists, there are plenty of public schools as well, and Im not just talking schools like Berkeley. A big name might look good and have more experience, but if you are truly a standout to the point of being nominated for a Rhodes, than you are truly a standout regardless of where you receive your education.
Answer: You have to be nominated by your university to be a Rhodes Scholar, so the first step is to go to a university that has a very skilled and experienced nominating committee... that would be Harvard or Duke or UChicago or one of the other very elite schools. If you look at the list of Rhodes Scholars the next time they are appointed you will see that nearly all of them come from one of these elite schools. Then once you are there, all you have to do is convince the school that you are one of the two or three best students in that school.
Nothing to it!
And, sorry, I can't agree that a significant number of Rhodes scholars are from non-elite schools. The total graduating classes from the eight Ivies plus the ten most elite non-Ivies is no more than 24,000 kids out of more than 1 million annual graduates, yet they get almost all the Rhodes. These scholarships are awarded regionally, but often even the regions with no elite schools elect scholars who are away at elite schools in other geographic locations. There was a scholar elected from Montana State U. recently, but an elected scholar from California was back east at school and surely beat out some wonderful candidates from the west coast. The competition for the Rhodes is extremely fierce and no candidate is likely to succeed unless they are backed up by a well orchestrated push from their home college. In elite schools this push starts when the kids are freshmen - deliberately assembling the resume that the committee knows will have the best chance of success. There are 1000 amazing candidates each year, but there are only 30 who will be elected, and those are primed candidates.
