JAPAN EARTHQUAKE??? :(?
I havent been heating alot about japan it seems it was only in the new for a few weeks. Does anyone have an update on whats going on over there..if so thanks
Answer: Well, your observation is accurate, our American media has purposely been guiding us to look away from Japan for several reasons ( all very political reasons) But here's the lowdown, There are now two ruined reactors that are in several states of meltdown and another which will soon be in that same condition. There is now an 80 mile ring of abandonment of homes and farmland and not a million people on their own but several million, probably around 2.25 million people homeless and without sustainance, food, water,etc....and the seawater is radioactive and so are some of the sea creatures....Japan is being rocked daily by quakes from the North at Honshu Island to the far south of Japan..even as far north as the south of the Russian far southeastern pennensula...What's odd is that Mostly, the quakes are happening off the eastern coast of Honshu Island by about 40 to 65 miles but of late they've been happening on the western side of the Island and these quakes travel southward towards the Banda sea then to Northern Australia and then through Tonga to New zealand....almost like a zipper......If you download the USGS earthquake mapsroom, you'll get almost realtime reports and minute by minute updates on every quake in the entire world...you can look at any quake on earth and get all the data you need....and if you do this, You can watch Japan almost turning over foot by foot...it's a really unique tool.

How is the Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles, CA similar to the Kobe, JAPAN EARTHQUAKE ?
Long story short. Freshman, earth science academic. Writing an essay on 2 earthquakes: Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles, CA January 1994; Great Hanshin earthquake in Kobe, Japan 1994.
2 paragraphs on how theyre similar, 2 paragraphs how theyre different.
You dont have to write me an essay; please just tell me facts or better yet give me a few websites. Thank you(:
Answer: Northridge earthquake
This earthquake had a 6.9 moment magnitude. The hypocentral depth was 19 km. The duration was about 10 seconds to 20 seconds. The earthquake occurred along a "blind" thrust fault, close to the San Andreas fault. Note that a blind fault is a fault which does not extend to the surface. In other words, it is buried. Seventy-two deaths were attributed to the earthquake, with over 9,000 injured. The earthquake caused an estimated $20 billion in damage
Great Hanshin earthquake
It measured 6.8 on the Moment magnitude scale. The duration was about 20 seconds. The focus of the earthquake was less than 20 km below Awaji-shima, an island in the Japan Inland Sea. This island is near the city of Kobe, which is a port city.
The earthquake was particularly devastating because it had a shallow focus. The earthquake had a "strike-slip mechanism." The resulting surface rupture had an average horizontal displacement of about 1.5 meters on the Nojima fault. This fault which runs along the northwest shore of Awaji Island.
Approximately 6,434 people lost their lives. The quake caused approximately $100 - 200 billion in damage.

why was the JAPAN EARTHQUAKE 2011 so powerful and what was the name of the plate boundary?
im doing a project for school where i haveto write a newspaper report on the Japan earthquake 2011. im really stuck.. i need lots of information.. can anyone give me some? i especially need the question above. thankyou:)
Answer: The most powerful earthquake recorded in Japanese history, magnitude 8.9. The tremors were the result of a violent uplift of the sea floor 80 miles off the coast of Sendai, where the Pacific tectonic plate slides beneath the plate Japan sits on. Tens of miles of crust ruptured along the trench where the tectonic plates meet. The earthquake occurred at the relatively shallow depth of 15 miles, meaning much of its energy was released at the seafloor.
The Pacific plate moves fast in tectonic terms, at a rate of 9cm (3.5 inches) a year. This leads to the rapid buildup of huge amounts of energy. As the Pacific plate moves down, it sticks to the overhead plate and pulls it down too. Eventually, the join breaks, causing the seafloor to spring upwards several metres. The plate tectonics of the region are complex, and geologists are not sure which plate Japan sits on. Candidates include the Eurasian plate, the North American plate, the Okhotsk plate, and the Honshu microplate.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar/11/japan-earthquake-tsunami-questions-answers
This earthquake occurred where the Pacific Plate is subducting under the plate beneath northern Honshu; which plate is a matter of debate amongst scientists. The Pacific plate, which moves at a rate of 8 to 9 cm (3.1 to 3.5 in) per year, dips under Honshu's underlying plate releasing large amounts of energy. This motion pulls the upper plate down until the stress builds up enough to cause a seismic event. The break caused the sea floor to rise by several meters. A quake of this magnitude usually has a rupture length of at least 480 km (300 mi) and generally requires a long, relatively straight fault surface.
Because the plate boundary and subduction zone in the area of the rupture is not very straight, it is unusual for the magnitude of an earthquake to exceed 8.5; the magnitude of this earthquake was a surprise to some seismologists. The hypocentral region of this earthquake extended from offshore Iwate Prefecture to offshore Ibaraki Prefecture.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency said that the earthquake may have ruptured the fault zone from Iwate to Ibaraki with a length of 500 km (310 mi) and a width of 200 km (120 mi). Analysis showed that this earthquake consisted of a set of three events. The earthquake may have had a mechanism similar to that of another large earthquake in 869 with an estimated surface wave magnitude (Ms) of 8.6, which also created a large tsunami. Other major earthquakes with tsunamis struck the Sanriku Coast region in 1896 and in 1933.

DETROIT -- Chinese-made cars have quietly arrived in North America for the first time, but without the bamboo dashboards and quirky names that have adorned them at recent auto shows. The cars, in fact, are not even from the myriad Chinese automakers whose North American ambitions have been stymied by inferior quality and sometimes laughably poor - Honda begins importing compact cars into Canada from its plants in China, marking the first time Chinese-made cars have entered North America; few car shoppers are likely to notice the change, and there is no expectation that Chinese-made cars are destined for the United States anytime soon. What happens with the dead bodies of the 25,000 in JAPAN EARTHQUAKE?
Im curious. What happens with the bodies of those who died from the Japan earthquake/Tsunami?
I read there is an estimated 25,000 people dead. Do Japanese authorities actually have to identify all the bodies that were not swept away? Thousands of bodies? Do they attempt to contact the family members or do you just assume that paerson is gone? Does anyone know what the process is in catastrophic events like this?
Answer: Cremation is the custom chosen when Japanese loved ones pass on. However, there are limited resources (crematoriums) and they have not been able to keep up with this process. They have resorted to burying their dead, though this is not their usual custom.
If they can identify those that have passed on, they do and have tried, but this is not possible with every body found due to the enormity of the earth changes that have taken place in their country. There are many thousands that haven't been identified because of this. They are currently trying to recover their remaining dead along the coastline, but are being hampered due to the dangerous radiation levels. God bless Japan.

Does JAPAN EARTHQUAKE and radiation spill caused you to avoid eating Japanese foods?
This question applies to concerned people who love eating sushi or Japanese cuisine.
And they may miss eating these foods because of radiation spill.
Although I know Japan has encountered many earthquakes in its history, I did not expect it to be that strong (M8.9).
Answer: Well not exactly sushi because sushi is made of fish. The fish/sushi we eat in America is not likely from Japan more likely from the Pacific/Atlantic.
However, Japanese manufactured products, I tend to avoid due to the radiation. The factories these things are made from, use actual Japanese products from Japan which may contain radiation.
