how to get from Seattle to MT RAINIER?

Were flying into Seattle and renting some equipment from REI. Short of renting a car to sit in a parking lot how do we get from Seattle to Mt. Rainier? I found ONE bus company that claims they only do a tour, and we must return that day. We plan to meet up with a professional organization for two days of classes / training prior to the climb. Weve paid, but cant seem to get there. Thanks in Advanced for any and all leads!!
Answer: While I was living in Seattle last year I rented a car and drove to Mt. Rainier, it was only around $35 for a day. If you decide to rent a car the best thing to do is check Expedia or Travelocity, etc. to find cheapest rates. Then go to actual site for whichever rental agency had the best rate, sign up for their free discount program, then rent from them using your discount number. Sometimes there are even greater discounts the day before you plan on traveling. I used Thrifty and National alot in Seattle, they both have locations that are easily accessible by bus in the downtown area. Oh, and if you don't have a computer with you go to one of the 3 locations of Online Coffee, they have computer rentals. Have a great time!

Answer: That it Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill. I asked the same thing of the Seattle Parks Department when I first moved here (about 2 1/2 years ago); it's sort of the "classic" spot for a portrait of Seattle. You should be aware that the mountain isn't always visible due to the large amounts of water vapor in the air here; the locals will say that "the mountain is out" on a good day. In June you have a pretty good chance, though; beyond that, just hope for sun. Good luck!

How can I divide the geological features up into three days, and in what order would I conduct the tour? Thanks a bunch! Im a beginner mountaineer going to Mt rainier this summer. Are these tools needed and do climbers there mind someone joining their group for the summit attempt?
Answer: If you live in Seattle, the Mountaineers organization is a great way to go. But, if you do not live in Seattle and will be visiting, their schedule probably not work for you. I strongly urge you to join a guided trip with a approved guide. I can personally vouch for Alpine Ascents international You will have to cross the unmarked glacier to get to camp Muir. A ice ax and crampons are recommended. Please carry the 10 essentials. The weather can be a killer even in June and July. Please register your hike at the park office. I really doubt any group will just let you "tag along" to the summit - the liability issues would be huge - If you fall and get hurt you can sue the group. Solo travel above high camps or anywhere on glaciers is not permitted except with prior written permission from the park Superintendent. Be safe. Enjoy the climb.

What is the best mountain climbing guide service for Mt. Rainier?

i have little ice climbing experience but have rock climbed and backpacked. i would want this to be my jump to the ice climbing world.
Answer: "Climbing" Rainier doesnt necessarily mean you`ll be Ice Climbing. There are a couple of routes that dont require ice climbing and being that you never ice climbed I doubt the guide service will start you out on Rainier. Also, backpacking does not equate Mountaineering, its pretty much completely different- Snow shoe/crampon technique, avalanche skills, crevasse skills, high altitude skills, and cold weather skills....you can Backpack and not do any of those things. You`re best bet to get into the ice climbing world is to take an intermediate Ice Climbing course or to go ice climbing with a guide. I wouldnt take the basic courses if you already know how to rock climb because the basic course includes knots harnesses anchor setups (not ice screws) and some very basic technique. What you learn with a guide on steep/vertical ice (frozen waterfalls etc) you can apply to Mountaineering and Rainier, but what you may learn on Rainier you may not be able to apply to steep/vertical ice...since you may never come across it on the mountain.

How much experience is needed to climb Mt. Rainier?

I am considering a trip to Mt. Rainier with a trekking and climbing group next summer. I am worried because I have no climbing experience what-so-ever. Oh yea, and i am 15. The trip is a program for teens, so Im sure itll be fairly safe, though. Should I take the trip, or is it too dangerous for someone with no experience. If it is too dangerous, is there anything I should do to prepare myself before the trip? Thanks :) PS: we climb Mt Adams about a week before Rainier...so that will offer as some practice
Answer: I have taken Scouts to the top, 15 was our minimum age and we had another leader who had made several trips when he lived in the area. We prepared by learning rope techniques including tying critical knots in the dark. We spent most of a year conditioning with weighted backpacks. Our local elevation is 3000 feet so we had a small advantage over those living closer to sea level. There are no "easy" routes, however there are routes well within the ability of a group of reasonably fit novice climbers. The key is to have an experienced guide who is not afraid to eliminate any Individuel that is unsafe or otherwise not prepared for the trip. Adams is a good trial, but keep in mind there used to be a wagon road to the top of Adams! You will work for Rainier. If the leaders of your group have experience with Rainier, and you trust their judgment and your training on the technical skills...go for it. Thousands climb it each year and it can be comforting to see all the others on the trail with you. I'd at least get Adams done, I took my kids up from the Trout-Lake (south) side when they were 13 and 11.
