Did Palin lobby to get the BRIDGE TO NOWHERE and is now saying she fought against it?
I just want to know the truth.
If she really is innocent of fighting for the Bridge to nowhere than she should not be attacked for it If she fought for it and hired lobbysts to get it, and is now lyhing and saying she was against it.....I want her to suffer the consequences.
So which is it? Please provide links to back up your claim.
Answer: If you are truly interested in the truth more so than blind acceptance of an ideology, you should read this. A web site paid for by the Alaska Democratic Party says unequivocally that the state of Alaska officially abandoned the Bridge to nowhere project, and credits Governor Sarah Palin.
Or ... it used to say that, before the page mysteriously vanished some time during the past few days.
I did find other sources to debunk this unethical smear against Palin.
The proposed Gravina Island Bridge, also known as the “Bridge to nowhere,” became a national symbol of wasteful congressional spending and driver of earmark reform. On Sept. 21, 2007, the State of Alaska officially abandoned the controversial project.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Gravina Island Bridge initially received $223 million in 2005 via earmarks by Alaska Senators Ted Stevens and Lisa Murkowski. The bridge would have connected Ketchikan, Alaska with its local airport on nearby Gravina Island (population 50). Congress stripped the earmark after a national uproar about it but appropriated the money anyway for unspecified transportation uses. Former Gov. Frank Murkowski’s administration set aside about $113 million of the appropriation for the Ketchikan bridge. However, Gov. Sarah Palin said the $398 million bridge was $329 million short of full funding, and only $36 million in federal funds were set aside for it. She said it was clear Congress had little interest in spending any more money for it and that the state had higher priorities. [State abandons Ketchikan 'Bridge to nowhere,’ Anchorage Daily News, 9/21/2007; Don Young's Way, Wall Street Journal, 2/7/2006]
On Oct. 20, 2005, Ted threatened to resign from the Senate if lawmakers took away money allocated for the Gravina Island Bridge and the Knik Arm Bridge and redirected it to Hurricane Katrina repairs in Louisiana. The attempt to redirect the bridge money was defeated, but Congress later removed the earmarks after intense public criticism. ['Nowhere' label was winner for bridge foe, Anchorage Daily News, 1/8/2006]
If the bridge were built, the family of Sen. Lisa Murkowski would benefit. Murkowski’s mother Nancy, wife of former Gov. Frank Murkowski, is co-owner with her three siblings of a 35-acre parcel of land on Gravina Island. The plot is valued at $245,000 and is within a mile of the bridge’s western end. While critics charge that the bridge would increase the value of their property, the Murkowski family has taken umbrage at any suggestion of impropriety. Murkowski called her family’s undeveloped Gravina parcel “a worthless piece of property.” [Don Young's Way, Wall Street Journal, 2/7/2006]

Doesnt she infer that she did not take the federal monies when in fact she did?
Answer: True...she also charged her state a daily allowance normally used for official Governor travel, for more than 300 nights spent at her home.
She also billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office...charging a per diem allowance for what was intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.

Everyone knows she was totally for it. She even campaigned on the idea of getting the bridge and only turned against it after it was dead. But she still took the money for it. And she continues to lie and say she was against it.

A rare earmark opposed by Palin was funds to fight rape crimes. Rape is less important than BRIDGE TO NOWHERE?
Now Palin says the reason she fired the Safety Commissioner wasnt because he refused to fire her sisters ex husband, it was because the Commissioner requested federal funds to combat rape crimes in Alaska.
Alaska is the rape capital of the country, law enforcement is underfunded, and she fired the Commissioner for this earmark, but supported $400 million for a bridge-to-nowhere?
All of her positions are those of a male chauvinist pig, and shes supposedly a woman.
Answer: Palin is a NUT. She was more concerned with the fact that she didn't personally approve THIS earmark request than she was about the good the funds might do in fighting crime and making the women of her state safe.
You know there's yet another questionable bridge project, federally funded of course, set to be built near Palin's hometown. It will also cost several hundred million in taxpayer dollars. It is being contested by locals who say they don't want it because it will make for a traffic nightmare.

I am a little unclear, what happened to the $200 million she took to pay for the Bridge to nowhere. First, she was for it, then she was against, but she got the money. Where did it go?
Answer: she spent the money. Also, cnn did a report that there is a road to nowhere where the bridge was suppose to connect to. The people of that town where the road is are very upset because according to them, the money could have been used to fix the streets and sidewalks.

What is this "BRIDGE TO NOWHERE" about and why does it reflect poorly on Sarah Palin?
I havent really heard about this bit of info...So, explain, why does the "Bridge to nowhere" issue tend to reflect poorly on Sarah Palin as others here at Y!A insinuate?
Answer: The Gravina Island Bridge or "Bridge to nowhere" was a project that John McCain and other politicians seeking to reform Washington by cutting down on "pork-barrel" legislation used repeatedly as an example of how expensive and pointless such legislation can be.
The project would have cost $398 million and would have resulted in a bridge connecting Ketchikan, Alaska to Gravina Island, which only has 50 residents and is already served by a ferry and an airport. The project was basically just an attempt to keep constituents happy in Alaska by dumping a ton of federal money into the state for no reason.
The reason it reflects poorly on Palin is that she is now calling herself a "reformer", despite the fact that she supported this project and others. She now accepts credit for ultimately pulling the plug on the project, but as the source article I have provided explains this decision was not for ethical reasons, but simply because the funds weren't there in the end. She has now re-framed the episode to make herself look like a reformer.
Sorry guys - anyone who says otherwise has simply not researched the issue, because the facts on this one speak for themselves.

Why all the fuss about the BRIDGE TO NOWHERE?
-Palin didnt ask for the earmark, congress did.
-Obama and Biden VOTED for the Bridge to nowhere.
-If Palin wanted to have it built, she would have had it built.
What say you Obamabots?
Palin didnt ask for the funds. When the Federal Government gave the money to her she used it to help Alaska with things they really needed.
Brock, what information did I leave out?
Answer: Obama is saying she supported it, then tried to turn the money down when it was a unnecessary project - and then spent the money after all.
The money was clearly earmarked for Alaska, and available for their use. So she accepted money being held out to her and used it on projects her state really needed, instead of using it for the stupid reason the federal government tried to force on her.
She takes the old way of doing things and makes it work for the well-being of her own state.
Sure sounds like smart business to me, and certainly someone I want on my side!
