RIFF; Why Write Novels at All?
Last year, I found myself mildly obsessed with a cache of YouTube clips, featuring the novelists Jeffrey Eugenides, Jonathan Franzen, Zadie Smith, David foster wallace and Nathan Englander at a 2006 literary conference in Italy called Le Conversazioni. Part of what interested me, in a gate-crashing kind of way, was the backdrop: midsummer on the - Garth Risk Hallberg Riff essay argues that many contemporary authors seem to have determined that the purpose of fiction is to make the reader, and the writer, feel less alone; questions whether this project is enough to make their art endure. Who would you choose: DAVID FOSTER WALLACE or Stephen King?
I prefer David foster wallace. I like Stephen Kings writing, but I dont like what he writes about. I know I cant change that, but Davids writing appeals to me most. Whats your opinion?
Answer: A bizarre question. It is like asking what do prefer a spoon or a fork? Which immediately brings the question to mind, Well what am I going to be eating? Maybe if you asked Koontz or King? or Pynchon/DeLillo or Wallace?
Neither of them are going to be considered great writers. King is a superb storyteller and he clearly takes the craft of writing very seriously. Wallace was never able to get out of the way of his own prodigious knowledge. I mean if you haven't given a good year of rigorous study to Wittgenstein are you ever really going to be able to appreciate "Broom of the System"? I think not.
So back to my literary feast. If I want to feel good about my 4 years of University level philosophy classes and I can't find my copy of "Gravity's Rainbow" then surely Wallace will do. If I am looking for a cracking good story to while away the time on a long flight then perhaps King would make fine repast.
However one thing Wallace does hold over King is the fact that he can be re-read. In fact after you have read "The Stand" and "It" does one really need to read anymore King? I have read "Infinite Jest" 3 times and each time found new complex references to math or philosophy that eluded me on the previous readings. Plus with each reading I find it easier to ignore the footnotes.

Books recommendations like Infinite Jest by DAVID FOSTER WALLACE?
I just finished reading and i loved it. Know any other authors who resemble his style and have that touch of brilliance to them? Or books that are sort of like Infinite Jest?
Answer: Oh, that's a tough one. Infinite Jest is pretty much an original. If you've read any of Wallace's older stuff and like it then you should definitely look into the work of Don DeLillo. Actually you should either way, because DeLillo is a genius and Wallace agreed with that assessment.
A friend of mine once said that the only thing he could stand to read after Infinite Jest was Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves. I haven't read that one yet though so it's all hearsay. From what I know of the book it does seem fairly reasonable.
I know I should be able to think of more but I'm drawing kind of a blank at the moment. I hope this was somewhat helpful to you.
