How to get a dog in a DOG SHOW?
My mom just got a pure bred irish springer Spaniel, and wants to know how to go about entering her dog in a Dog show. Also do they have Dog shows in Reno, Nevada, or close to there?
Answer: 1st off you need to know what kind of dog it is... english springer, irish setter.... figure that out 1st. Then go to akc.org and look under handlers there is a list in there that gives names and locations of all the akc registered handlers. Find a handler close to you have them look at the dog and they will be able to tell you if it is show quality or not. Just because it is a pure breed does not mean that it is a show dog. If they think it is a dog that can get it's championship they will either be able to teach you how to show the dog, show the dog for you, or hook you up with handling classes. Also on the AKC page you can look up the events that are in your area. Find a show that is close to you go there watch what a show is all about and talk to people that have the same breed as you have. athey will be able to help you as well. Learn before you walk in the ring......

What tricks do i have to teach my dog to be in a DOG SHOW?
I want to enter my dog in a Dog show, she know basic commands, but (be very specific)
what tricks does she need to learn?
what do i expect in a show?
Answer: Not to eat bait left on the ground. How to stand and let strange adults put their hands on her. How to walk nicely on a leash, but without heeling. How to make an "about turn." How to walk up to the judge, but stop a few feet away.

Westminster DOG SHOW: New dog breeds not shown much love the first night
The 136th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog show kicked off Monday night (Feb. 13) in New York Citys Madison Square Garden. The groups shown during night one were the Hound group, the Toy group, the Non-Sporting Group and the Herding group.
DOG SHOW !?
Ok,Im entering my Italian Greyhound,Geno in a Top Dog Show. I would love some information on what to expect and what to do to practice.Any websites to help me get started? Please help!~God Bless~!
I have looked it up and I know what to do its just,I would like a little more info on what to expect and everything!
Answer: Their are classes that will teach you and your dog what to do. If your lucky, and very nice you could ask for a handler to teach you.
When I got my first dog from a breeder she was 10 months old and already knew what she was doing, though I didn't have a clue. I ended up getting taught by a handler about 20 minutes before my first time in the ring, we ended up with 4th place (in junior handling), and a 2nd place in our other one shortly after (Open for all Aussies).

DOG SHOW???
Me and my dog will be comnpeting at our first Dog show ion the 28th. It is being hosted by a church and is mostly just for fun, but i still want to do well. I think the catergories we are entering him in are "biggest dog" and "peoples choice". I want some tips on how to do really good. Also, do you think "biggest dog" is the actual biggest dog, or are there just a bunch of big dogs, and the judges choose their favorite? We are going to call them, but I was just wondering what you thought. Thanx
Answer: I think the judges will either measure the at the shoulders & weigh the dogs. So it could be one or the other or one of each. You will just have to wait to see just how they do it.
You are going to have a wonderful time, enjoy it. Now you may want to show him in AKC saunctioned events if he is AKC registered.

How do you become a show dog handler?
Ive always thought handling dogs in a Dog show seemed fun, I know that often handlers than arent the dogs real owner are hired to show the dog. I wondered how you went about that. How do you train/get hired to show someones dog?
Answer: Next time there is a Dog show near by, take a handling class! Go to AKC's website www.akc.org and do some research on showing. This takes lots of training to become a professional. Pick a certain breed, master handling that breed and then learn other breeds.
I would recommend getting a dog to start off with, find a reputable show breeder and begin showing. Once you have your first champion, you can start advertising show handling, as you can't get hired until you have proven you have made a champion. Once you have experience, you can start!
Start with the handling class and find yourself a mentor.
Good luck!

Any DOG SHOW people on here ever use the Super 14 by Farnham to help your dogs hair grow and thicken up?
If you do, how well do you like it?
I was recently at the Delle Valley Dog show this past weekend and was talking with Handler Taffe McFadden about how to get my dogs coat fuller. She said she uses the Super 14 on all her show dogs. Anyone else ever used this product on their dogs?
Answer: Yes, I used Super 14 for years on my Cocker Spaniel girls. Sometimes they would blow coat after a season and delay their show career. The Super 14 was excellent at putting coat back on them and actually preventing much loss to begin with. I recommend it highly.

What should i bring to a DOG SHOW if i am showing my dog?
I have food, drinks, grooming supplies, my dogs show slip, my dog, her cage, and chairs, but what else should i bring?
Answer: Treats (bait) for the ring?
An ex-pen is a handy thing, especially at outdoor shows.
A toy?
Don't forget the judging schedule and map.
Don't forget the bowl/pail for water.
If it's an outdoor summer show, you may want to bring a towel that you can soak for her to stand onat ringside, or a spray bottle with cold water so you can soak her feet and tummy, or squirt some water in her mouth.
Remember in the ring that unless you are being judged make sure she has the shade, if necessary stand so she is in your shadow. The dog's welfare ALWAYS comes first.
If you have a breed that's tabled, and the table is in the sun, check the top before putting her on it to make sure it is not too hot.
Heve fun!

What are the top ten best breeds of show dogs for a DOG SHOW?
I want to show a dog in Dog shows and in the agilities when Im older. Id like a list of dogs that is good in all the categories, or at least some of them. Im not sure what the categories are, so could you please list the categories, too? Thank you.
Answer: I think the best thing for you to do is go to infodog.com and find a Dog show close to you, and go fall in love with whatever.
There are shows all the time, they have schedules and breed rings which you can watch.
Spend the whole day. Learn as much as you can. If you are going to add conformation showing to your list, watch some smooth coated breeds even if you like hair. You will learn a lot about conformation etc.
When I was a kid I spent at least one entire day at a show every weekend watching dogs in the ring.
As an adult I can claim having bred a dog that won the world show, in its breed against Flavio when he was alive. (Flavio was a top Handler from Brazil who came to the US while he was alive). I also sculpt dogs for show trophies.
As everyone has said there is no best breed to show especially in conformation as the dogs are first shown against dogs in the same breed before they compete in group and from there go on to Best.
That said, if I wanted to get an agility dog, I would probably look into a Boarder Collie.
But watch the agility ring if that is what you want to do.

How to start on dog conformation handling without purchasing a show dog?
I live in my parents home, and they do not like dogs in their home. I have always wanted to start Dog showing, but am not able to get a show dog myself. What are ways to participate in conformation showing without purchasing a show dog? (How to find someone to allow me handle their dog if they dont even know me) I cant get into junior handling since I am over the age limit.
Answer: go to a few Dog shows and talk to the owners/handlers and talk to them about getting started in handling. this would also be a good expierence to get used to the set ups of shows and also to see how others handle the dogs.

How can people say DOG SHOW handlers dont love or care for their dogs?
Ive seen the oh so many times. It just baffles me when i hear this. Is it that they just dont know? Or have they seen something? Cause every show dog i know i cared and loved more then most humans are.
It sickens me to hear people say this cause it just an ignorant thing to say.
What do you think?
my dogs are the same my weimaraners get out exercising everyday. my one loves to chase the others around the yard. I plant bird wings for her to find. she loves that. she wont give it back to me at first but still.
And jane my bulldogs are a healthy as can be. yes we do c-section and ai but so what. its for their safety. people wanted to breed that nasty attitude out of them.
my weimaraners are well taken care of and i only show the ones that like it. my bulldogs love to show.
They are first and foremost my companions my pets.
You know what jane your the misinformed one. My SHOW weimaraners can go out into the field and hunt and have proven so. I am on the way to getting a Junior hunter on the one.
Pointers can go out and point i have seen them do so and they are also show pointers.
If you get a bulldog from a responsible breeder the health problems are minimal.
Dont spout off your idiotic assumptions with no proof because you are absolutely wrong.
Ok once again you are wrong. Responsible breeders do not breed for color. Yes there are colors that they would like to see but they dont specifically breed for them. they breed for health first and foremost.
Answer: It is because most people only repeat things they hear and have no real experience. While of course some show dogs aren't treated well (the same goes for a lot of pets only) the majority are treated very well. They are first and fore most well loved pets. They get to run & play, they get to sleep on the bed, the couch, go for walks, have toys & treats, etc. They aren't kept crated 24/7, they aren't just bathed, groomed put in the ring and then forgotten about.
Many show dogs are owner handled not sent off to a handler. My own are owner handled.
A lot of time and training is spent with most show dogs. The majority have more attention & human bonding then most pets.
My own show dogs sleep on my bed, sleep on the couch, have a huge toy box full of toys, go shopping at Petco & Petsmart, go camping, hiking, go on doggie walks, go to doggie camp, etc. They are well loved pets.
*****a responsible show dog person/breeder does NOT breed simply for beauty (conformation is NOT a beauty contest) They breed for an entire package..conformation, heath, breed standard, temperament, longevity. Sadly people that think that showing is only a beauty contest are very mis-informed********
***** People most certainly don't show dogs for the money!!! there is no money to be made showing dogs...very, very few shows have money prizes. More money is spent on showing, keeping the dogs well fed & healthy, traveling, etc then is ever made******
*****Jane you are so totally misinformed and sorry but clueless/ Conformation is very important no matter if it is a show dog, hunting dog, earth dog, obedience dog, herding dog, etc... a dog with good conformation is far less likely to end up with injuries to joints & muscles because of stress to these areas then a dog with poor conformation..this is why there is a breed standard, a conformation standard..if you actually read a breed standard you will see that it takes in all aspects of a dogs anatomy, his temperament, his movement, not just bits & pieces of it..it is an entire package...it is also NOT the responsible breeders/show people that have created the problems seen in a lot of breeds (be aware these same issues are also found in mixes as well, there fore aren't limited ot just "show" purebreds) The problems you see are from irresponsible breeders, breeders who don't care about the breed who don't breed for an entire package, who don't breed to standard or for health, longevity, temperament...The dogs you used as examples are products of irresponsible breeding not from responsible show breeders, you really need to get out there and know what you are talking about, because right now you don't. A well bred Saint Bernard is defiantely not riddled with HD and is very capable of living a pretty long life...well bred terriers can certainly do what they were bred for..many hold not only conformation titles but also earth dog & hunting...you simply have absolutely no idea.
I show my dogs, my Danes not only meet breed standard and do well in conformation but also excell at obedience, rally, tracking and other venues...my husbands GSP has wonderful conformation, can hunt all day in the field (and stay sound) competes in rally & NAVHDA...I know many other dogs of various breeds that excell in the breed ring and can go out and do herding, hunting, etc Form helps function.********
Showing hasn't ruined any breeds, irresponsible breeding by people who don't breed to standard, health, longevity, temperament have.
****there is not always a winner..a judge reserves the right to not give any awards if he feels the dogs competeing aren't worthy and don't meet breed standard. I have seen this happen on several occassions and heard of it on many more, so just because there is a class at a Dog show doesn't mean there wil lbe a winner or even placements.Again shows how little you really know about Dog shows and the dogs in them.****
****as for color that is defiantely not the main focus of a responsible breeder..there are some colors taht aren't accepted in the show ring simply because they do carry health risks if bred irresponsible and the parent clubs by not allowing them in the show ring are trying to discourage the indeiscriminat breeding of these dogs. The parent clubs of a breed sets the standards for the breed and the judging criteria...not the AKC, UKC or CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) again something you had no clue about*******
*****Jane, let me see if I can put this in simple terms you can understand...the reason some colors in various breeds is not accepted in conformation is because if used for breeding they can cause some serious health issues.Since conformation is for selection of potential breeding dogs it is unwise to allow colors that have a known potential for health problems. The breeding of these colors is to be discouraged. Mismarks are allowed to compete in all performance venues. Color has nothing to do with performance, but it does impact breeding. Responsible breeders look at the entire picture and breed to add back to the breed that is of value in conformation, health , longevity & temperament. I've been a vet tech for 36 1/2 years, have studied genetics and have done extensive study on canine reproduction & breeding. In addition I have many years of experience with working dogs....herding & hunting as wel las competeing in obedience, rally and recently starting tracking. I've also been a dog trainer for 37 years********

How can I put my dog in a DOG SHOW?
Does anyone know how I can put my pitbull in a Dog show. I live in Tallahassee Flordia. I have three pitbulls and I wanted to put my female rednose in a Dog show. She is very storng she pulls over 2,500 pounds on wheels. She has a great personality, great muscle tone, everyone I know says she has glass eyes, her coat is very shiny, she is exactly 89 pounds, and she is only 1 year and 2 months old. I make sure shes always in tip top shape everyday. Because I bath her and make her exercise every single day. So can anyone tell me how and where I can get my dog in a Dog show.
Answer: For a conformation show, check with the United Kennel Club. UKC registers Pit Bulls. http://www.ukcdogs.com/
First your dog has to be registered. Did you get papers with her when you bought her???? If not, she can get limited registration if she is spayed to compete in Obedience or other performance events.
You can find out about weight pulling competitions. She is very young to be pulling high weight. http://www.ukcdogs.com/WeightPull.htm
http://www.iwpa.net/
http://www.workingpitbull.com/Rescuesports.html
I wait till my dogs are at least 18 months before asking too much of them in competitions. For long term health. I'm sure she seems fine now, but if you strain her joints too young you'll regret it.
There are "Bully shows" for extreme types of Pits...people breeding for massive over size and huge abnormal heads like these. They are not sanctioned by the UKC or the American Pit Bull Terrier Club.

How do i know if my english mastiff is show dog material?
I want to enter a Dog show but i dont know what to look for in an english mastiff. IE. Teeth, height, ect.
Answer: I own an English Mastiff and I did show him as a puppy. First you need to have papers showing he is a purebred, you obtain these when you buy your dog from a breeder. Some breeders will sell purebreds who are not show material at a cheaper cost and you DO NOT get their registration papers, so you can't show. The black mask on an English Mastiff is very important, the blacker the better and no cheating by using colorants to try and darken you dogs mask. Training your dog how to "stand" in the ring is also important. They have to have the correct stance, my dog developed a lazy back left paw that would never stay where I put it, this didn't make him good show quality. It takes lots of hours of training both YOU and your dog to enter a quality Dog show.
Definately go to a Dog show and ask alot of questions. People do not mind helping promote the breed.

How much does it cost to visit a DOG SHOW in the US?
just a ballpark figure - not to enter and show a dog - just as a spectator?
Answer: It depends on which show it is, usually you can get in from $2.00 to 20.00 some shows have box seats those are little more expensive at some shows......and the parking from $1.00 to 7.00....again just depends on the show....
if a larger show, with lots and lots of dogs, you will pay a little more to get in...
the programs are from $10.00 to 18.00 for the larger shows....
