Help! i need to know how scientific and medical discoveries in the Victorian Era comes in to Dr jekyll and mr hyde on the duality of Human nature.
Im really confused!
Answer: In Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, science becomes a cover for supernatural activities. Dr. Jekyll derives his potion in some sort of scientific manner as opposed to finding a magical amulet or something that releases evil as you might find in other stories. Dr. Jekyll’s brand of science, however, veers towards the "transcendental" (indeed, supernatural), while Dr. Lanyon adheres to a more traditional set of scientific notions.

What is the link between DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE and Crime in Victorian Society?
Dr jekyll and mr hyde is a book by Robert Louis Stevenson that is connected to crime in Victorian society... what id like to know is how/why it is connected to crime in victorian society. As usual longer answers stand a better chance of attaining the best answer award. Thankyou in advance for your help.
Answer: Victorian society was notoriously straight-laced and sexually repressed and the Jekyll-Hyde story let the imagination run free; it released the inner urges the Victorians deemed inappropriate for the time but in literature, it was not only accepted, but embracedand acclaimed. The book is not about crime in Victorian society, per se, it is about morals. As to contemporary crime, the release of murderous/lustful urges would naturally connect to Stevenson's story, and anyone convicted of such crimes would find themselves being compared to Mr Hyde...

What are the links between Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde and Jack the Ripper?
I am doing a project for school and can only find a few details on the web, please help!!
Answer: Read the original Jekyll & Hyde story or if pressed for time, read a detailed summary of the story. Then research the Ripper history; there's plenty of info about that weird series of crimes.
I'd recommend looking at both individually, and then draw comparisons on your own. It should become quite obvious. Also, working out which came first should offer a very interesting insight.
Also, for bonus points, look up something called, "Springheel Jack"; another series of weird crimes in England around the same period. Then, to look even further afield, watch, "The Mothman Prophecies" (a really cool film based on a true story), as there is a link between all of these things in the supernatural.
Sounds like a fun project. Enjoy!

what are some historical events related to DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE?
I was wondering if anyone knew of any historical events going on during the time Dr jekyll and mr hyde was written, as well as some more modern events?
"more modern"
like what events from today, within the last 50 years or so can we relate to the book.
Answer: It was written in the Victorian Era in England at a time when people were worried about the increase in urban population in large cities like London, which caused the spread of poverty. This was due to the expanse of railroads, a new postal system, and medical and sanitary advancements. During this time, farming was on the downfall and industry was on the rise. The government was being reformed to allow people to participate in self-government. The world was becoming smaller as world communication and travel were becoming so much easier and more accessible.
Some specific events for you:
-This was the time that Austrian priest and scientist Gregor Mendel discovered genetic traits.
-The first telegraph cable was laid across the Atlantic from America to Europe.
-French scientist Louis Pasteur discovered germs as a cause of disease.
-Motion pictures were born.
-The table of elements was created by Dimitri Mendeleev, a Russian chemist.
-Dynamite was invented by Alfred Nobel, of the Nobel Peace Prize.
-Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone in 1876.
-America was getting over the Civil War of the 1860's. The slaves were freed.
-Krakaota erupted in Indonesia, 1883.
-Technology company IBM was founded in 1888.
Edit:
Okay, for some modern parallels, I would look to politics and homosexuality. In the last decade, there have been several politicians against gay rights who are in fact gay in their private life. Larry Craig, a former senator, served on the House Ethics Committee. When Representative Barney Frank was involved in a gay sex scandal, he urged for more severe punishments against him. He was also extremely critical of Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinskey scandal, saying he was probably "a nasty, bad, naughty boy." Yet, in 2007, Craid himself became the center of a sex scandal when he was accused of lewd behavior in a men's bathroom, which was just the beginning of a long line of gay sex rumors against him.
This is a parallel of the book because in it there are several heavy hints that Hyde himself is gay. He is at the very least a very lewd sort of guy. Because of the restraint in Victorian society, the author condemns the sexuality of Hyde and implies that Jekyll is more the correct way to be. Jekyll was the way the man wanted to present himself to society, but Hyde was probably his true nature. Senator Craig wanted to present himself as a prim, proper, conventional man, and condemned people who were truly more like him because he was afraid of what he really was.

Lord of the Flies or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: How does evil grow and affect society as a whole?
I have to write an Englsh essay on this question, and I wanted a few ideas as a base for developing my thesis.

Please help, and share! Thank you.
How does evil grow and affect society as a whole?
Answer: From Shmoop Lit
The theme of primitivity is important in Lord of the Flies as it pertains to the development of evil. As the boys get closer to their base nature, survival trumps all the worst characteristics of all come out.
In Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the evil grows from within. Eventually the evil personality must come out.

What is a plot event in Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde that represents the good and evil present in humans?
I need to find a plot event that shows both the good and evil in people, not just one or the other. Thanks!
Answer: I believe you're missing the obvious here. The idea that taking a potion can separate the good and evil in man is the primary plot device of the story. It is not the Doctor's goal, but it is the device of the author. Ultimately, the author seems to be saying that even the good in man cannot exist without the evil since they both die.

How does Robert Louis Stevenson explore the duality of human nature in DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE?
This is for my English course work and is about the novella, The Strange Cse of Dr jekyll and mr hyde. Please, please list any information which can help me with this piece of course work. Thanks!
Answer: Your in luck, I just had pretty much the exact same essay question and got an A for it. That is a weird coincidence though, i had 'How does Stevenson explore the complexites of human nature and the concepts of good and evil in his novella 'The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?' anyway you didn't need to know that so here's my proper answer:
Write about:
The description of setting- how they refect the charectors, the laboritary, Soho etc. eg. Dr. Jekyll's house looks nice and ordinary on the outside whilst his laboritary is a horrible building and you couldn't tell they were the same building from the outside and yet they are.
The Narrative Style- How it is written from three points of view; Mr. Utterson's, Dr. Lanyon's and Dr Jekyll's.
Charector Flaws- none of the charcetors are perfect, Mr. Hyde is pure evil but Dr. Jekyll is not pure good because he keeps turning back into Dr. Hyde because he enjoys it. Dr. Lanyon and Mr. Utterson arn't perfect either they talk about 'growing curiosity' and how even they find it hard not to want to know the truth on the spot, they are impatiant. Mr. Utterson is also nosy and antisocial sometimes.
Physical appearence- Dr. Jekyll is big and handsome where as Mr. Hyde is short and gives of a feeling of deformity, what does this signify? Only a small part of Jekyll is evil?
To be honest you can get away with just about any nonsense in an English essay as long as you bakc it up with evidence. Personally i don't Stevenson ever intended for his work to be anylysed so closely. These essays are pretty pointless anyway. When my english teacher was explaining it she started talking about the importance of doors and windows and how Jekyll was like a door and Hyde like a window, but if you tried that hard i think you could turn any fictional charector into a window.
Name a fictional charector i'll explain why they are like a window for you.
Anyway i hoped that helped, that was the kind of thing i wrote and it seemed to be what my english teacher wanted to hear.

Film on The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde?
Hey guys,
Do you know if there is a film entirely based on the novel from Robert Louis Stevenson, The Strange Case of Dr jekyll and mr hyde?
If there is, would you be kind enough to tell me the title as well as its director and year of production.
I am reading the book right now, and would like to see the film so as to understand it the best as possible.
I am a foreign student in english lit by the way.
Thanks in advance :).
Well, this is the one I am currently watching, however, it does not remain faithful to the narrative structure.
Answer: Sadly, there aren't any movies that stick completely to the story of the book - some keep slightly truer to its plot and characters than others, but all of them add in new characters, fiddle around with the dialogue, add a romantic interest, make Hyde into a behemoth, or other such things.
The adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde starring Tony Todd that the other answerer mentioned is actually one of the least faithful to the plot and story of the novel - the movie is set in the present day for one thing, the actor for Jekyll and Hyde is african american (which isn't a bad thing - Tony Todd is amazing - but it's not accurate), and Utterson is turned into a female cop who looks like an aging hooker, just to name a few of the changes.
Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome movie (Hyde bites a woman's nose off, so how can it not be) but it's not at all true to the book. Obviously the other answerer has never watched it, or else they would know this.
There is one movie that comes closer to matching the book than most - it's the Jekyll and Hyde 1986 animated film. It used to be up on youtube but it's been taken down, and replaced by something that calls itself the animated Jekyll and Hyde movie but it's just a dubbed slideshow.
Anyways, it's the closest to the book since it keeps in Utterson's investigation of Hyde, Jekyll's suicide and Lanyon's death, and thankfully it doesn't give Jekyll a romantic interest. However, if you do watch it keep in mind that it still changed a lot of the story and inserted a many different characters.
Here's the imdb page for it:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0821767/
You could check it out from your local library, if you're interested. Interlibrary loans are a magical thing.
