Answer: I was just at Westminster and can tell you absolutely that the most wining group has been the terrier group and the most winning breed has been the Wire Hair Fox Terrier (same WHF terrier won the first 8 shows)
*Edit - people regularly think it is the poodle because there are three varieties of poodles and a LONG standing excellent breeding program has brought that breed to higher show status than other breeds. This year there happened to be two poodles in the best of show competition - CH.Brighton Minimoto on Fifth, daughter of the famed Ch. Ale Kai Mikimoto on Fifth and Ch. Smash JP's Win A Victory, #1 Poodle (all varieties) in the USA and 108 BISS winner. Their credentials speak for themselves in the show circuit, but a lot of regular folks not in the sport feel that poodles are given preference.

Answer: according to the SHOW PREMIUM (which is not hard to get) name on 2 trophies (3 if american breed ) that all stay with the kennel club, a crystal cup that you do get to keep, the big ribbon and infinite bragging rights. each Best of breed (which would include the BIS) get a westminster "medallion" -- that's it. Talk show visits, adds, ect, would be individual negotiations with the folks that have the tv station or whatever...

This AKC dog show is a benched show held in New York City. Watch this 2 day dog show if you want to LEARN about different breeds and breed standards and how a dog show works. For those who arent attending the dog show is aired on TV next week Monday 2/12 and Tuesday 2/13. Only AKC Champions of the 154 recognized breeds (165 varieties) will compete for the title Best In Show. If you dont see your breed represented at this show, it is not an AKC breed. Labradoodle this and cockapoo that, imperial, teacup, puggle whatever are not entered here! You will also learn what each of the "purebred dogs" are truly bred for at this show and why mixing them up means unpredictable characteristics.
Answer: I will not be attending, but many of my friends who have champion dogs will be; according to AKC & WKC rules, your entry MUST be a champion of record in order to compete at this level... it didn't used to be that way, years ago! Answer: The USA Network has the rights to the WKC, and they have the tapes of the 121st show. They have a number of past shows on DVD. If nothing else, they can get you in touch with the right person.
USA has a forum for the WKC, and those people would be the best to direct you further.

PETA vs. Westminster Dog Show?
I went on Google to find out the air date for the Westminister Kennel Club Dog Show for this year and I found a article from the LA Times:

Im new to PETA and all that so I really dont understand a few things. What "cosmetic surgeries" is PETA referring to? And dont they have a purpose? What role do these "cosmetic surgeries" play in the dogs going to a shelter? Isnt their more pressing issues that could be addressed to reduce the number of purebreeds in shelters, and how could we go about that? Since denying air time to the Westminister Kennel Club probably wouldnt do any good what can be done instead? And how will this affect veterinary medicine and purebreed owners or breeders? Sorry I asked so many questions, I just really want someone with more knowledge of PETA to give me some opinions.
Answer: Well I don't always agree with everything PETA says and does--they're a bit radical for my taste. But their concern for animals is well meant. I didn't read the article because it was taking forever to pull up. My guess is they are referring to the chopping off of certain breeds' tails or slicing their ears half off. I've long felt that that is a barbaric practice and the AKC should stop it.
I don't think the answer is in stopping dog shows--just using some common sense when it comes to the grooming of purebreds. The AKC would have to revise it's policies on this for people to wise-up. I sure as hell wouldn't want a limb or ear chopped off.

how come every dog in the world is on the Westminster kennel club dog show, except for the Karelian Bear Dog, the cockapoo and the canaan dog and other breeds?
Answer: not recognized, as it is a new breed or not established enough, some times dogs are recognized but so rare none show up. Some breeds dislike what showing does to the breed as it is a beauty contest to them and stud books are keep and local shows held. Cockapoos and other mix breeds are not true breeds they are basically mongrels or mutts, they can be shown in fly ball and other sports but rarely confirmation as no breed standard is set for mixes, and I thought the Canaan was AKC, but rare

Answer: The only live show is Westminster. We won't get Crufts since BBC decided to let their ignorance get the better of them, so Crufts is on another channel that doesn't get broadcast here. It wouldn't be live anyways either. Unless Animal planet decides to stop playing footsy with human shows, they will probably not air it.
Eukenuba National Championship isn't live, it is aired in January, the show is in December. I am glad it is going to be in Florida this year, as I really didn't feel like hauling out to California.
Also if you want a live show, find a show in your area to go to. I am sure there are plenty.

Best in show for Westminster?
A few weeks back while on my computer I saw a headline for an article that Uno the beagle won best in show at the Westminster kennel club dog sho in NY.
I like the fact that a beagle won for a change. I actually stopped watching dog shows cause I was tired of seeing poodles win. I DONT hate poodles, I think theyre nice dogs.
I grew up with a female beagle mix as a kid had her for a good 11 years until she passed September 28th 2004.
Now I have a 1 year old purebred beagle and a 2 year old male pug.
When the movie Underdog came out last year I was happy to see a beagle get the spotlight for a change since Collies,Golden retrivers, Huskies, German shepherds, Jack russell terriers and Dalmatians have all had their run on tv and in movies.
Anyone else agree?
Answer: I was cheering for the weim. Another underdog. I have one and she's my baby :) I had to cheer for her kind.
