WOOLLY MAMMOTH May Be Resurrected by Scientists - ABC News
Jan 20, 2011 ... Japanese scientists believe they have found a way to bring Woolly mammoths back to life.
If a WOOLLY MAMMOTH was shaved, would it look like an elephant?
What is different between them?
Answer: They would look similar, but mammoths had very small ears and their tusks were much longer and more convoluted than those of modern elephants. The head of mammoths was also higher and they had high neck vertebrae, probably related to the storage of fat between their shoulders.

What is the Best Way to Polish The WOOLLY MAMMOTH Ivory Im Carving?
Ive carved a pendant in the shape of a horse, about 2" long by 1 1/4" tall. What is the best way to put a good sheen on it? Would you use the rotary sanders that come to fit a Dremel, or would you do it entirely by hand?
Answer: I've never worked with actual ivory, but what I do to polish my polymer clay pieces is this. It may work with your piece.
I get some fine-grade wet/dry sandpaper from the auto store. I wet it and start at 800 then go to 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit. By then the piece is usually silky smooth.
Then, I have a small bench grinder fitted with an unstitched muslin buffing disc. Put a box behind it in case the piece goes flying. Wearing a simple dust mask, turn the machine on and holding the piece on the lower half of the wheel, begin buffing. Keep the piece moving at all times so that the buffing is even. That will put a glasslike shine on your piece and save you alot of hand buffing.
I hope this works for you.

Answer: Anyone with any intelligence what so ever knows that life evolved on this planet over millions of years. Everything evolved, all plants, animals and humans. There is absolute proof of this fact. Many religious leaders are starting to teach that our Creator created evolution. The one thing that I have noticed about a narrow mind is that there is not room to fit much in.

What are the main reasons for cloning/resurrecting a WOOLLY MAMMOTH?
Scientists are pretty sure that they can do it, but why should they? What are some reasons for it? All I can think of is that they could potentially make some sort of prehistoric theme park or zoo where they keep extinct animals on exhibit...
Also a bit curious about how it would be done, maybe a link or explanation of the theory/technology?
Bonus points for primary resources!!

>"All I can think of is that they could potentially make some sort of prehistoric theme park or zoo where they keep extinct animals on exhibit..."
Nice idea for a movie, but that would not be a primary reason why they would do it!
We do similar things today with our contemporary animal species for various reasons. We just haven't attempted it with extinct species in past because the science wasn't mature enough and there was no perceived commercial benefit or value. Based on how they would do it would never produce a full fledged Woolly mammoth in the foreseeable future (in our lifetime). At best the offspring would have mixed traits (both good and bad). For example, we genetically engineered something called a Liger by mating/breeding a tiger with a lion, It typically does not exist naturally in the wild. We're not sure whether it would actually survive outside captivity. It's more of a curiosity than anything else. The question before us in general is reconciling whether our science has out distanced our wisdom.

Whats the difference between a Mastodon and a WOOLLY MAMMOTH?
The two terms seem to be used interchangably. Are they the same animal?
Answer: Mastodons or Mastodonts (meaning "nipple-teeth") are members of the extinct genus Mammut of the order Proboscidea and form the family Mammutidae; they resembled, but were distinct from, the Woolly mammoth which belongs to the family Elephantidae. Mastodons were browsers and mammoths were grazers.

1 degree in 11 decades, reversing the previous 500 year cool period, may very well be natual, Bacch. The cooling off from the MWP into the LIA took 3-4 decades and represented a shift of more than 1 deg C.
Answer: No, it is fairly obvious to the unbiased that the Clovis point ended their existence. It eliminated the vast majority of the saber tooth's food when the mammoth was hunted to near extinction. There were other factors like a possible asteroid strike and an extended second ice age that might have contributed but having a very large population of humans armed with incredibly deadly spears must have been the main factor.

do you think scientists will ever clone a WOOLLY MAMMOTH?
or other extinct aninmals like the dinosaurs in jurassic park? i hear scientists in asia are trying to clone a Woolly mammoth from a frozen carcass they dug out of the permafrost in siberia. i think that would be so awesome if its possible! id love to see a park filled with herds of mammoths, saber tooth tigers, dinosaurs and other extinct animals.
Answer: we found a frozen Woolly mammoth, but it's DNA was too destroyed that any attempt to clone it is impossible. And considering the dinosaurs died 65 million years earlier, it's impossible to ever bring the dinosaurs back. and the techniques that were used to bring the dinosaurs back in Jurassic Park would be impossible in real life. the DNA of a dinosaur survived in a mosquito. in reality, the blood of the dinosaur containing DNA would be contaminated instantly after entering the mosquito's body. and it was fossilized in Amber fossils, and Amber is only 30 million years old, whereas the dinosaurs died 65 million years ago. you unfortunately would need fresh DNA to make any cloning attempt possible. so to answer your question, it's not possible to clone a mammoth or even dinosaurs for that matter, cause their DNA was not made to live for millions of years, and that's required to make a cloning attempt.

Should scientists resurrect extinct species such as the dinosaurs or the WOOLLY MAMMOTH?
Within the forseeable future, scientists will probably resurrect the dinosaurs and Woolly mammoth. Should they or should not they?
I think scientists should resurrect exintict animals. Studying the dinosaurs and Woolly mammoth will help us understand nature.
Answer: I think it would be irresponsible and pointless to bring back animals which have become extinct through natural processes - mammoths, Neanderthals, dinosaurs, etc. They became extinct because they could not adapt to changing conditions - there is no place for them in the modern world. Their ecosystems have vanished or changed beyond recognition - there is no habitat or food for them any more, and they could not survive. However, animals which have become extinct solely because of human hunting or other interference are a different story. We would be righting the wrongs of our ancestors and benefiting the environments we have deprived of a link in the food chain if we were to bring back species such as the thylacine.

What is the best shampoo to minimize fleas on my pet WOOLLY MAMMOTH?
He is of the Portugese variety.
Answer: Oh, gosh, that's a problem. But as a woolly-mammoth breeder (sorry, not the Portugese variety; I prefer the Brazilians) I have figured that a mix of Dove "Go Fresh Therapy" Shampoo (grapefruit and lemongrass scent) and Head and Shoulders (this is best because the active ingredient, selenium sulfide, helps eliminate the flaky skin which attracts fleas) will work.
Make sure when you wash your Woolly mammoth that you lather in the shampoo and don't forget to rinse thoroughly. Otherwise, your mammoth will be VERY uncomfortable (and probably aggressive).

Why did the WOOLLY MAMMOTH go extinct?

Answer: As the man said 'Climate change and over hunting'. The same happened to the Mega fauna in Australia about 18-20 thousand years ago.
