Harvard, Yale?
Im not planning on applying to Harvard or anything when Im a senior, but I was just wondering: is Harvard overrated? When people usually picture it, they picture pure bliss, those magnificent Ivy colored walls, and all that stuff. Is it a load of crap? Or is Harvard really the finest learning institution in the world? Just out of curiosity, is Yale or Harvard better?
Answer: Being at Harvard does not make you happy. It is in Cambridge, which is not exactly paradise on earth! But what it does have as an advantage, aside from a HUGE reputation, is a lot of money and the best connections that any school can have. When you go to Harvard, the name opens up doors all over the world. If you want to go somewhere to seee something, or meet someone famous, or get a special behind-the-scenes tour of a museum, a government office or a business, the name Harvard will get you in, or there is a Faculty person at Harvard who knows someone who will get you in. And there is one faculty member - without doubt one of the leding experts in the world in his field - for every six or seven students. So you will never have any trouble at all finding out exactly the information you need from one ofthe smartest people in the world. On the other hand, these people expect you to be hardworking, brilliant and creative, and if you are not, they will eat you alive. So dont even think about going there unless you are ambitious, smart, a workaholic, and ready to compete on the highest level.

I got accepted to Harvard, Yale, and University of Virginia... where should I go?
I like the mix of good academics and fun social scene at UVA, and Im worried the Ivy Leagues might be overly competitive and too cut-throat. But I feel like it would be stupid to pass up going to Harvard or Yale! Im interested in politics and economics, and I possibly want to go to law school. UVA also gave me a bit of scholarship money, so it would be cheaper than Harvard or Yale. I need to decide soon and Im so confused! HELP!
Answer: You can't make a bad choice, but Yale has the most selective and arguably the best Law School in the country.

What is the needed SAT score for Harvard, Yale, Juilliard, and Oberlin?
Does anyone know the SAT scores needed for Harvard, Yale, Juilliard, and Oberlin (in ohio).
Answer: A perfect score would be good for Harvard and Yale, but that certainly won't get you in on it's own. Everyone applying to those schools has very high grades in the hardest classes and great test scores; you need that and you need a lot more. Oberlin doesn't expect quite as much; good grades in hard classes and above average SAT will do it. Julliard is much more concerned about your audition.

What i need to do to get into Harvard, Yale or Princeton?
Hello,
Its always been a big dream of mine to get into Harvard university, Yale or Princeton, and Im trying my very best to at least have a chance in getting into one of them. Im currently a community college student in the US, planning on getting my Bachelors degree in engineering from a good university. I just want to know, what do I require, other than a very good GPA, to get into Harvard, yale or Princeton. Im not sure if this affects, but im an international student too. Thank you.
Answer: It is not possible to transfer to Princeton. If you want to go there, you'll have to apply as a freshman even though you've spent time in community college.
As for Harvard and Yale, it is possible to transfer in, but both take only a very small number of transfer students. For both of them, you will need to be at the very top of your community college classes. If you have had an interesting life experience that most students will not have had, that is very good and it helps to write about that in an essay at either institution. (Your international background might provide some fodder here.) The main thing is NOT to have participated in every extracurricular under the sun, but rather to have one or two things that make you extraordinary or unusual. These can be things you've achieved (national science fair winner, best International Latin Exam score in the country, etc.), but they can also just be unusual experiences you've been lucky (or unlucky) enough to have (travel in remote areas, running a company, recovering from major accident or illness, being unusually dedicated to a cause or voluntary institution).
There are differences with the applications, too. Harvard will try hard to look at the "whole package." They like to take people with strong character and sense of self, who look like they will "make it" in the world. Be confident, able, personable, and eager for Harvard. They like the idea of shaping people who will change the world - so on an application, you might try to stress your future ambition or to talk about the ways that you in particular will be an excellent leader or important person thanks to your Harvard education. Harvard likes the idea of broad service to mankind.
Yale still looks for the "Yale man" (or woman) in their applicants. They want somebody who will fit in with their old-school New England style that notionally stresses private clubs, khaki pants with blazers, history, literature, drinking port, reading the Classics (Greek and Latin), and discussing philosophy. Of course the *actual* Yale students are a fairly normal cross-section of the high-achieving students around the world. They by no means all know Latin, and they like beer as much as good wine, but Yale admissions officers nonetheless keep an eye out for a kind of old-school ideal. They are trying to recruit more scientists, but you'll still have a better shot at Yale if you can show that you are well-educated in literature and the humanities when you go in. You would do well on a Yale application to stress that you appreciate knowledge for knowledge's sake. They actively like the idea of elitism. They are also keen on budding politicians, but as that is not your style, don't lie - it will go wrong for you in an interview.
Good luck!

What is it about Harvard, Yale, and other Ivy League colleges that makes them so special and prestigious?
I know Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and other Ivy League schools are considered the best in the country and that most of us arent eligible(including me!) to get accepted. What is it about these schools that makes them better and more challenging and harder than other universities?
Answer: There are many reasons the brightest from all over the world fight to get into these 8 schools.
As others have noted, that have large endowments. What this means for their students is that the sky is the limit in terms of opportunities. If a student wants to study a subject not offered, the ivies will find someone to instruct them If they want to travel to other countries to learn hands on, grant money flows.
Next, graduates have access to jobs kids from most colleges don't have.Employers bang down the door of ivies to hire their graduates. There are elite jobs that many employers will only hire an ivy league grad and the like for.
Lastly, these schools are very generous with financial aid. They are among the few "need blind" schools meaning they don't consider if you can pay in the admissions process. If you can get in and pay your EFC, they will cover the rest. And with no loans at most of them which is highly unusual!

What is the average weighted GPA for those accepted to Harvard, Yale, and MIT on a 6.0 scale, I am in high school and wondering if I am on a path to get into one of these schools.
Answer: Weighted GPAs are meaningless; every high school has their own weighting scales. US schools are on the 4.0 system, unweighted. And while the average GPA for those schools is about 3.8, they turn down more than 90% of applicants, including 4.0 students, valedictorians, and perfect SAT scorers. You need great grades and test scores to get in, but you need a lot more as well.

I wanted to find out more about Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Stanford.
What are some of their best majors?
What other schools who are popular in psychology and english?
Answer: I'm not sure I understand what you mean by this. First of all, "best" and "most popular" majors are not the same thing. The most popular majors tend to be easy, and because the major is so common it is harder to get a good job. The "best" majors are usually the difficult ones that give you a niche skill so that you can get a great job post-grad.

What are the requirements to get into Yale, Harvard, Stanford, and Columbia?
What are the requirements to get into Yale, Harvard, Stanford, and Columbia? Sat scores, unweighted/weighted GPA, any set # of AP courses? Any other information you can give me, I would greatly appreciate! Thanks for answering!
Answer: The requirements are a diploma or GED, SAT or ACT scores, and usually 3 SAT II tests. That's it. However, everyone applying to those schools has the highest grades in the hardest classes and very high test scores, and they take fewer than 10% of applicants. They regularly turn down 4.0 students (unweighted, with the hardest classes) and valedictorians. You need all that to have a shot at getting in, and then you need a lot more to actually get in. One of the things you need is a good reason for attending, and if you're considering all of those, you don't have one yet - they don't have any top programs in common. Why do you want to go to one?

What GCSEs/A-levels would i need to attain, to be able to study Medicine at Harvard/Yale/Brown?
I want to study medicine in the US, im from the UK so what GCSEs and A-levels would i need to be able to study Medicine at Harvard/Yale/Brown?
Answer: It wouldn't matter. Medicine in the US is a postgraduate degree course. Whether you got in would depend pretty much solely on how good your first degree was.
That said, to study medicine _anywhere_ you will almost certainly need to be the best student in your school bar none. That means you'll probably be getting straight A*s at GCSE and straight As at A level.

What does it take to get accepted in Harvard or Yale?
Ok I know im young. But I reeaalllyy want to go to Harvard or Yale. Im trying to start early to know how to get in so I can know what to do and be prepared instead of asking last second in high school. What does Harvard and Yale look for in an applicant? Are there any certain clubs, activities, sports? Ive already been in Student Council for my 3rd year now. Is there anything else thats important? Please answer me!
Answer: these guidelines should help for both Yale and Harvard
#
Step 1: Prepare in High School
* Your preparation for Harvard begins early, starting with the decisions you make about where to attend high school.
Select the Right High School
* Some prep schools have good track records for getting their top students into Harvard and other elite schools. The Wall Street Journal has identified the following schools as having excellent success in getting their students into top colleges, including Harvard:
1. Collegiate School, New York, New York
2. Brearley School, New York, New York
3. Chapin School, New York, New York
4. Polytechnic School, Pasadena, California
5. University of Chicago Lab Schools, Chicago, Illinois
6. College Preparatory School, Oakland, California
7. Trinity School, New York, New York
8. Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts
9. Delbarton School, Morristown, New Jersey
10. Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire
* If you are not in a position to attend one of those high schools, select a school that offers a rigorous curriculum, a good selection of Advanced Placement courses, and a selection of extracurricular and athletic opportunities that match your interests.
* The right high school is not essential to getting into Harvard, however. Each year Harvard accepts 5-10 home schooled students.http://www.massnews.com/past_issues/2000/7_July/hschool.htm1
Focus on Academics
* Academic achievement will be looked at very carefully by the Harvard College admissions department.
1. You need to take the hardest courses available at your school, and do well in them.
2. Harvard recommends the following high school course of study:
1. Four years of English, with extensive practice in writing
2. Four years of math
3. Four years of science, including biology, chemistry, physics, with an advanced course in one of them
3. Three years of history, including American and European history
4. Four years of one foreign language
5. Most admitted students rank in the top 10-15% of their class.
6. Harvard requires students to submit scores from either the SAT Reasoning test or the ACT.
7. The student also needs to take three SAT subject tests.
#
Step 2: Find an Advantage
* Harvard is looking to assemble a well rounded class of interesting people who have passion and excel in specific areas. While you don't have to have received a Nobel prize for cancer research, demonstrating consistent participation and achievement in an area outside of academics can help to differentiate you from the more than 29,000 applications Harvard receives each year.
#
Step 3: Apply to Harvard
* Harvard accepts the Common Application, and also requires a Harvard Supplement. A complete application also requires supplemental information from the school, in addition to the school recommendations and transcript required as part of the common application.
#
Conclusion
* Start early, work hard, take tough courses, excel in extracurricular`s or athletics, and finish at the top of your class. None of this guarantees your acceptance at Harvard, however, so make sure to have a back up plan. Even if you are not accepted, the work you put into preparing yourself will serve you well wherever you go to college.
