i forgot to trim my candle wick n lit it.... moments later, it did a miniature explosion like a firework... but only the tip exploded. should i be worried about the little bits of the wick that flew in every direction?
Answer: no its nothing to worry about its just the flammable coating on the new exposed part of the wick and sparks some times if the candle has been burn down which cause things to clump up over time..but its nothing to worry about

How long do you think the EMBERS were on the oak floor to cause this kind of damage?
I have renters who left burn marks from Embers from the fireplace on my beautiful oak floor. The burns are into the wood, and not just on the surface. How long would it take for the Embers to be on the floor to cause this kind of damage. I would say they were there at least a 30 seconds or longer to do this kind of damage. The renters are saying it happened as soon as the Embers landed on the floor. That hard for me to believe.Does anyone have an idea?
Answer: well Embers are hot so yes it is possible. also 30 seconds is not very long to get something to pick them up with. accidents happen. more than likely they did not do it on purpose. they should have renters insurance. if they don't then i think you should make it a requirement for them to have it before you rent out any more property.

what does it mean to see someones face in the EMBERS of a fire?
I was sitting one evening watching the glow of the Embers in the fireplace. left the room for a moment and when I came back and looked again - plain as day was the silhouette of a man I know. I was totally blown away but felt such warmth and wonder to see this - only sorry now I didnt grab the camera.
Answer: The human mind is very good at pattern matching and making order from chaos. Eventually random bit of light and dark would like something or someone that you'd recognize just by random chance. Ever watch the clouds go by. Notice how they all look like something. Using charcoal EMBERS to warm up an engine that wont start?
I have a 1995 Chevy Blazer that just wont start. Its been around 15 to 20 below here lately! Someone told me to fire up some charcoal, let them turn to Embers and then slide that under the car to try and heat up the engine. Has anybody ever tried this? Is this safe for the truck?
Yea, it sounded a bit dangerous to me as well. Its a bit hard to run up and buy a block heater when the car wont start! Everything on the Blazer is practically new and it still doesnt start. Guess that lends little accuracy to "if everything is up to snuff, then it should start".
Answer: I have never tried charcoal... But I have used a Forced air heater... Works very well...

How hot are the glowing EMBERS in a camp fire?
I know it depends on the type of wood but just give me some examples. I know they are really hot but i want to know exactly. Also Why do they glow rather than flame?
Answer: Not only the type of wood but also how much air is getting to it, thus the operation of an old time forge.
But you can experiement if you want.
For instance, most fires will melt lead. Lead melts at just over 600 degree's, where as most campfires can't melt copper...which melts at 1200 degrees. Depending on the variables, one can test the temperatures of various Embers / campfires by what they can melt and what they can't.
I've found most are somewhere around the neighborhood of 750 to 900 degrees.
This is effected by wind blocks , surface fire of pit, relative dryness of the air supplied to the fire.

I am designing a theatre set - how can I create the effect of glowing EMBERS from underneath a platform?
It is a high school play, so low budget, but we have decent lighting, electricity, etc. It is indoors. The effect is to reinforce a post-war society in ruins kind of feelling. Ideas?
Answer: One idea: If your platform is high enough up to keep it from being a fire hazard and you've got access to a floor stand, gobo rotator, gobos (which can be kind of pricey- in a pinch, you can make one out of a pie tin, but it'll warp a LOT faster than a real gobo- a set probably won't last more than one or two performances), and a Source Four, set it up under the platform with a dark red gel (NOT cellophane. I know from my own high school drama experience that it CANNOT be used on theatre lights. It melts) and a couple jagged patterned gobos in the rotator. Hang a piece of scrim material below the platform for the lamp to project onto.
A Second idea: This would probably work better with a lower platform. Set up a row of fiber optic lamps under the platform (if you can rig them to only light in the red-orange area of the spectrum- probably just have to take the top off and replace the color disk with an appropriately colored and sized piece of gel). And a few of those little lamps will be a lot cheaper than a gobo rotator if you school doesn't already have one. Anyway, hope the show goes well for you!

What temperature does hot EMBERS/ash get to as a wish to fire kids pottery items in the bonfire?
Kiln fires pottery requires about 1000 degrees for firing. Well be experimenting by putting some items in a camp oven and some straight into hot Embers. Any knowledge on the temperature of same would be appreciated. How long would we need to keep hot Embers up to it? And I understand we leave the fire to die down and fish the pieces out the next day or so. Please advise.
Answer: I tried this in a metal bucket full of sawdust, I didnt think it lit ,gave up went to bed ,It burned all night and the peices were black ,and pourous but not clay any more. I had them buried halfway down in a 5gallon bucket. Look up "Raku" firing.
A creamic shop would probably kiln fire for a small fee.

Do you have the same braai experience braaiing with a gas braai as opposed to braaiing over proper EMBERS?
I think gas "braais" are a waste. What do you guys think?
Answer: You cannot get a proper braai without wood, then it is not a braai but a gas up? Gas is for bacon and eggs, tomatoes and mushrooms early breakfast in the morning at the beach. Do you know what a skottel is? I love a real braai with wood smoke and red hot coals, gas is just not the same. Some of my friends have all these very expensive very fancy gas braais, it is a pain to clean and the meat just does not taste the same. As for a gas potjie....how stupid, then you might as well make a stew on the stove, exactly the same thing......

What is the difference between vent-free gas log EMBERS and vented gas log EMBERS?
Recently I purchased a used set of vent-free gas logs. The glowing Embers needed to be replenished. I can only find glowing Embers for vented gas logs. Can someone please explain the difference? I must find these Embers before the winter sets in. Thanks!
Answer: Well, if it must be vented it means it gives off carbon monoxide fumes and that can kill you and your whole family so caution is required here. Vent free is no fumes are emitted. I have one in my bedroom and the logs glow and heat comes out and there is no vent. I never have to replace the Embers though. You might call the company you bought it from and enquire more. You don't want a fatal accident.
