This is a blatant example of the fox guarding the hen house.

And liberals wonder why conservatives complain about freedoms being usurped. ^^^ THIS is a perfect example.
My question: Do I have this right? The Federal Reserve can dictate how pawn shops can institute lending practices, but not car dealers?
Whats the point here? To protect consumers? If thats the case, then why are car dealers void from this oversight? Personally, I work at a car dealership where predatory lending is commonly the norm (28% loan origination fees along with 25% interest rates....and thats all profit for the banks, not the car dealers....the car dealers still need to profit from their sales.)

Answer: I concur. Making the CFPB a subset of the Fed is the *opposite* of what needs to happen.
The Federal Reserve was a primary cause of the current economic mess. Putting them in charge of "reform" and "consumer protection" is taking a step backward.

The sweeping legislation — about 2,000 pages long — overhauls the regulatory system in an attempt to prevent a repeat of the financial crisis. Among its major initiatives, it would create a Consumer financial protection bureau, impanel a council of regulators to monitor the financial system for major risks, impose tough regulations on complex financial derivatives and grant the government power to seize and dismantle teetering firms whose failure would pose a danger to the economy.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were ordered by their federal regulator to no longer trade their shares on the New York Stock Exchange, the agency announced Wednesday. Both stocks plummeted on the news.
Since that time, the Treasury Department has poured $83.6 billion into Fannie Mae and $61.3 billion into Freddie Mac to cover losses on the trillions of dollars worth of mortgage-backed securities they own or guarantee.

By going around the Senate, where Democrats hold an edge but Republicans can block action, Obama essentially declared that the chambers short off-and-on sessions are a sham intended to block him, but dont prevent him from such an appointment.
A defiant President Barack Obama, tired of Senate Republicans stalling his nominee to lead a new consumer protection agency, put him in charge Wednesday over their opposition.
"I refuse to take `no for an answer," the president said.
Outraged GOP leaders in Congress immediately suggested that courts would determine whether Richard Cordrays appointment was illegal.
With a director in place, Obama said the Consumer financial protection bureau can start overseeing the mortgage companies, payday lenders, debt collectors and other financial operations often blamed for practices that helped undermine the economy.

Does anybody actually believe this financial reform bill will accomplish anything at all?
Lets recap: The Federal Reserve will become even more powerful than they were before (you know, since they did such an AWESOME job fking up the first time around). Despite their epic failure the first time, a FULL audit of the Federal Rerserve also got ditched. Fannie and Freddie (which have been extended an unlimited line of credit by the Obama treasury) is no where in this bill, Too Big to Fail appears to be here to stay (surprise surprise), derivatives arent getting touched in any kind of substantive manner, AND the SAME Federal Reserve will house a "consumer protection agency" (LOL.........isnt this like asking Lindsay Lohan to make sure kids dont do drugs??)

South Carolina GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham mocked the Consumer financial protection bureau (CFPB) Sunday describing it as “something out of the Stalinist era.”
“This consumer bureau that they want to pass is under the Federal Reserve, no appropriation oversight, no board, it is something out of the Stalinist era,” said Graham on NBC’s Meet the Press.
Last week, Senate Republicans blocked the nomination of Richard Cordray to head the consumer agency created under the Dodd-Frank financial reform law.
“The reason Republicans dont want to vote for it is we want a board, not one person, making all the regulatory decisions, and theres no oversight under this person. He gets a check from the Federal Reserve.” Graham said explaining the GOP’s opposition.
