What is a great pellet or bb gun for target practice?
Im thinking of getting one or the other for shooting the deer in my backyard. I dont want to cripple them but I just want to give them a good nip so they will stay away. At the same time I would like to have some fun by having some target practice. If you guys could tell me a good, affordable bb or Pellet gun for target practice it would be much appreciated. I dont really want a hand gun but more of a rifle. Thanks.
Answer: Take a look at the Crosman 660, Crosman 760, or the Crosman 2100 (this is the same gun as the Remington Airmaster 77). You can find them at Walmart for between $30 to $70. All three of them are solid guns, reasonably accurate, and reasonably powerful (5-8 ft-lbs of muzzle energy depending on the model).
Avoid the Daisy 880 if you can. Its not well made. The breech bolt on every one I've ever used tends to occasionally blow back or blow open during firing unless the bolt is closed just perfect because of a lack of locking surfaces. Its not dangerous, but its not good either.
As for shooting the deer with a Pellet gun, I wouldn't recommend it. If you want to get rid of them, either call animal control and complain or wait till deer season and use a hunting license and deer tag to get rid of the nuisances permanently.

What is a good PELLET GUN for squirrel hunting?

The 392 has the power and accuracy to take small game(head shot) out to around 30 yards.
You always want to use the pellets your rifle prefers(accuracy) but generally speaking a good domed pellet is the most effective on small game. >Crosman Premiers, RWS Superdome, JSB Exact, etc
I suggest a Williams(AKA the Crosman 64) peep sight for the 392

These are fine rifles, but I'm not so sure I would not prefer the 392 for your needs.
The Gamo Big Cat has reasonable power and accuracy for the money. It's just that generally I would prefer a rifle with iron sights for your purpose. Springers are notorious for being hard on scopes. At least if your springer has a good set of iron sights a scope problem would not ruin your trip.

Is killing rabbits acceptable use for using a PELLET GUN to protect your property?
I live in a town that prohibits firing (discharging) of a Pellet gun or any air gun. However, there are two exceptions: protection of self and protection of property. So, I ask, given that the rabbits eat my garden vegetables and other landscaping, is discharging a Pellet gun to kill a rabbit ok?
Answer: Before you do anything, I think you better ask your local game management agency if its legal to shoot rabbits with a Pellet gun where you live since they're usually considered game animals. Then if it is, ask how you'd go about getting a permit to remove nuisance animals to make sure you qualify for a permit. Then if you qualify go talk to the local police. Tell them about your problems with rabbits in the garden and what you've found out about nuisance permits and then ask them if you'd be allowed to remove the rabbits using a Pellet gun if you have a nuisance permit. If they say yes... You're good. If not, well there's always live traps.

Answer: You could buy it without a permit out of state. Nobody will check your license. To remain legal you have to bring it to your local PD, let them record the info such as serial number and "test fire" it to make sure it is "safe". Translation, give them a balistics sample if they think you used it in a crime.

A Pellet gun is fired straight downward from the edge of a cliff that is 12 m above the ground. The pellet strikes the ground with a speed of 24 m/s. How far above the cliff edge would the pellet have gone had the gun been fired straight upward?
Answer: find the initial speed of the pellet
Vf^2 = 2ad + Vi^2
24^2 = 2(-9.8)(0 - 12) + Vi^2
Vi^2 = 340.8 m/s
Vi =~ 18.46 m/s
the intial speed of the pellet is 18.46 m/s
use the same formula:
Vf^2 = 2ad + Vi^2
when the pellet reaches its maximum height, its final velocity is 0m/s
0^2 = 2(-9.8)d + (18.46)^2
-(18.46)^2 = -19.6d
d = 17.38m above the cliff edge

What makes a Pellet gun different from a BB gun or air rifle. Also do Pellet guns and BB guns use the same ammo/bullets?
Answer: The terms are used loosely so confusion is
understandable.
BB guns are .177 cal. and are designed to
shoot round steel BB shot.
Pellet guns may be of .177, or .22 caliber,
(some others, but they're kinda rare), and are
designed to shoot hollow lead pellets.
Some guns can shoot both .177 ammo.s , but
the steel shot will damage some Pellet gun barrels.
Both kinds are called 'air rifle` if the projectile is
propelled by air, (and loosely, by CO2 as well).

What type of PELLET GUN can be considered heirloom quality?

What will fit on these sight rails on my PELLET GUN?
I have a ceap Pellet gun that I got at a fair. The sight rails on top of the gun are just two skinny grooves about an inch apart from each other. I had a scope for the gun. The scope almost fit, but not quite. What kind of scope will fit onto the grooves?
Answer: If it's a spring piston air rifle then you should put an airgun scope on it, not a firearms scope.

Airgun scopes are also parallax adjusted for airgun use. The effect of parallax is greater, the closer an object is to you, so this is important.

"doug" would be correct, if you have a dovetail or rail mount, either way, air rifles generally use 11mm(3/8 inch) rings.

How much fps does a PELLET GUN need to be to take down a squirrel?
I am trying to purchase a Pellet gun. I want it to be able to take down small game like squirrels, birds, rabbits things like that. But im not sure how power full it needs to be to kill those animals. So it would help if you know. Thanks.
Answer: You should actually be using ft-lbs (fpe) instead of fps to measure how much energy is needed to kill an animal. That's because the fps claims are almost always exaggerated. (Companies typically take a gun that's dieseling, shoot the lightest pellets they can find, and take the highest recorded velocity figure for their claims.) As a result of this exaggeration you don't get a good indication of what the gun will actually do when you use the sorts of ammunition that is designed for hunting. (A good way to approximate the actual velocity you'll see with medium weight pellets is to take 10% of the manufacturer's claimed velocity and subtract it from the claimed velocity.) FPE on the other hand takes the weight of the pellet into account when it figures the energy level so it produces a more accurate figure for how powerful an airgun really is.(1)(2)
As for how much energy you need for various animals, Bob Beeman came up with a rough guideline (which assumes perfect shot placement) for the minimum power for various species years ago.(3) According to him, mice and sparrows require 2 ft-lbs of impact energy. Starlings, pigeons, and squirrels require 3 ft-lbs of impact energy. Cottontail rabbits and rats require 5 ft-lbs of impact energy. Jackrabbits require 8 ft-lbs of impact energy. Remember these are minimum, impact energy figures... Having a nice big safety margin of extra energy is a very, very good thing, especially if you're not a crack shot. Jim Chapman expanded on this a bit by including what he considers minimum energy levels for larger animals here.(4)
As for how much power an airgun needs... For birds up to the size of pigeons, a gun (like the Crosman 760, Crosman 664, and Daisy 880) that generates 5-7 fpe should be able to generate enough impact energy for shots out to 20 yards or so. A gun with 6-7 fpe should be able to take squirrel at 15 yards (maybe a hair more) if you put the pellet where it needs to go. However its really too light for rabbit at anything but the shortest range (5 yards or so). A gun in the 9-12 fpe range (like the Crosman 2100, Crosman 2260, and UK legal springers) is capable of taking birds and squirrels out to 25-30 yards. And it can take rabbits at 15-30 yards, depending on shot placement and exactly how much power the gun produces. A gun in the 14-22 fpe range (Gamo Big Cat, Crosman Phantom, RWS 34, Benjamin Discovery) can take birds, squirrels, and rabbits out to at least 30-40 yards and likely a good bit further. A gun in the 25+ fpe range (RWS 350, Walther Falcon Hunter, Benjamin Marauder, Airforce Condor, Evanix AR6...) can take birds, rabbits, and squirrel out to 40+ yards with the limiting factor being accuracy not power.
At this point I feel the need to point out that while its important to have the minimum power level, its equally, perhaps more, important to be able to precisely place the shot. That's because airguns don't have the energy levels of a .22 rimfire, much less a shotgun or centerfire rifle. As a result you need to put the pellet in exactly the right spot to make the most of the energy it does have. And since the kill zones on most small game animals are usually .5 to 1 inch in diameter...
If you have to have a rough approximation based on actual velocities with medium weight pellets...
A .177 caliber gun that gets a velocity of around 600-630 fps should have about 6-7 fpe (actual). A .22 caliber gun that gets about 550 fps should have about 7-8 fpe. A .177 calibre gun that gets 700-900 fps (actual) should produce somewhere between 9 and 15 fpe. A .22 caliber gun that gets 600-700 fps (actual) will give you 12-15 fpe. A .22 caliber gun that gets 800+ fps (actual) will produces 20+ fpe.

What is the best PELLET GUN to buy for under 120 dollars?
I want to buy a Pellet gun for somewhere around 120 dollars, does anyone have any suggestions?
Answer: There are many airguns in that range, so it all depends on what you want to do with it.
Plinking: You don't need an expensive gun, a $30 pumpmaster 760 will do fine. If you want a plinker that can hunt small game within 15 yards, the crosman 2100 is ideal.
Hunting: Most of the budget springers by crosman and gamo are going to get 13-15 ftlbs of energy. Cabelas is selling the gamo bigcat for like $100 and that is my budget springer of choice. All of the budget springers have enough power to take jackrabbits out to 20-25 yards with good shot placement.

What are some great PELLET GUN rifles and pistols that I can get for squirrel control in my backyard?
The squirrels in my backyard suck up the bird seed in the bird feeders so I think they should also suck up some lead pellets before I throw em on my parents stainless steel grill! So what are some powerful Pellet gun rifles and pistols that I can purchase that arnt above $300.
And if you know of any gun-replica Pellet gun pistols or rifles that are good then you get extra brownie points!
Answer: Its been my experience that the 177 preformed better for me.
I get a faster muzzle velocity and much deeper penetration with the 177.
I first tried a 22 thanking it would be better, I was incorrect.
My son came over with his 177 Gamo and had me try it out.
Both weapons were scope mounted and very accurate.
I was impressed to see that the 177 was blowing completely through the squirrels chest cavity and resulting in 1 shot clean kills on the 4 squirrels that gave me a shoot around my house.
Luckily I had barrowed the 22 cal from a friend to try out to see if I liked it, and I did not.
I went out and bought a Gamo and mounted a scope on it and have rid my surrounding yard of squirrels and rabbits and a few snakes, only one required a follow up shot and that was a rabbit that happened to turn away from me just as I shoot.
But I do prefer the 177 at 1000 to 1200 fps at those speeds the cant help but blow all the way through your target.
