Can I RHODIUM plate my own jewelry?
I have a white gold ring that I need to get Rhodium plated. Ive only had it two months and the plating is going to cost $60. I figure this is going to get quite expensive after time. Can I buy some kind of home kit to do this on my own and will it be more cost effective?

Is it possible to replate RHODIUM on ring with groves and milgrain?
Ive been looking at mens wedding rings for my upcoming wedding. One of the rings I like is grooved and milgrained. Will the grooves and milgrain make it hard to replate with Rhodium in the future?
Answer: Don't expect to get it plated for free unless you bought at that store as it has to be highly polished, very clean and Rhodium costs over $1000 and ounce. Probably $30 to $50 is a fair estimate. Some white metals dont need to be plated but most of todays alloys will look whiter and brighter when plated with Rhodium as Rhodium is highly reflective and very white. White gold is still 58% yellow metal and will retain some yellow no matter what it is mixed with. And yes grooves and milgrain plate just fine with Rhodium.

I want to have my ring replated with RHODIUM. Does a jeweler remove the stones first, before dipping?
I have a white gold ring that I want to have replated with Rhodium. Will the jeweler remove all of the stones first? Or does the dipping process occur with the stones in place? Has anyone ever had a moissanite stone replated with Rhodium? Does the process affect the stone at all?
Answer: no. when they tell you they are going to dip the ring they aren't actually going to dip it in molten metal..hehehehe....the Rhodium is a chemical element, they run electric current through the liquid and attach a electrode to your ring and dip it in. the Rhodium jumps from the liquid and electroplates onto the metal in your ring. the stones are not affected. it takes no longer than 30 seconds usually and there it is, plated in Rhodium.
nothing to worry about, i promise.

How much does a size 5 RHODIUM plated ring cost?
I want to buy a size 5 Rhodium plated ring, how much do they cost, are they an expensive metal.
Answer: Ok, you seem quite confused. Rhodium is a white, platinum group metal. It is very very rare and expensive in any sizable quantities (as in a piece of jewelry would not be made of pure Rhodium) and is only plated (similar to a layer of paint, only electronically applied) on top of another type of metal. Rhodium is used to give deeper colored metals a brighter, highly reflective white finish. It does wear off over time, and a ring can be expected to need to be re-Rhodium plated about once a year to maintain that bright-white look (or else it will all wear off, and the true color of the metal underneath will show). Rhodium plating does not affect the price of the piece of jewelry, since it is too thin (microns thick) of a plating for any value to be added because of the Rhodium. However, there may be a premium on Rhodium plated pieces because of labor to plate the piece and that ultra-white metal jewelry is at a premium because it's popular at the moment.
What is going to make or break the bank is the metal underneath. There are 4 metals you might find-
Non-precious metal (aka base metals and "alternative" metals). These metals have very little value and are often used in costume jewelry that isn't really made to last. It will be the least expensive option, but some can turn your finger green, some cannot be cut off in case of emergency (as in if you break your finger, some metals cannot be cut off and you may literally loose the finger), and they wear done quickly. The low price point isn't going to make up for poor quality of these metals.
Sterling (.925) silver- is an inexpensive precious metal. Most people are not allergic to silver, it is soft enough to be cut off, and lasts a relatively long time. It will tarnish though, and that means it turns black over time. Tarnish can be cleaned off relatively easy though. It is it's about the minimum cost you should go on a wedding ring intended for everyday wear
Karat gold (aka 10,14 or 18K)- karat gold is alloyed, and the ratio of gold to alloy gets higher with the higher number karats. 10k has the least amount of gold, and most amount of alloy, therefore it is the cheapest option for a white gold ring, while 18k is the most expensive because it contains more gold and less alloy. Pure gold is too soft for a ring, and will bend and wear too easily, so rings are rarely made in 24k, and will never be white (gold is naturally yellow). White gold is pure yellow gold mixed with white-colored alloys like nickel and silver in high enough quantities to mask the yellow color.
Platinum- platinum is hands down the most expensive metal you will find in jewelry. It is extremely durable, and develops this beautiful luster and rich color after it has been worn a long time (platinum is usually not plated, but sometimes companies will Rhodium it). Jewelry made of platinum is usually much heavier than you would expect for the size. If your on a budget, don't even bother looking at platinum rings, they are just ridiculously expensive.
Past metals. You also have to consider the width, style, thickness and overall weight of the ring. A very thin 2mm lightweight band will cost far less in any metal than a very wide, very heavy weight band. There is no way of really giving an accurate answer without more specific details of what your looking for.

Will RHODIUM plating to a white gold ring add karats to the gold when tested?
I have a white gold ring, purchased as 18K, and even stamped "18K" but when I took it in to be appraised I was told that the gold tested at 12K. I also know that my ring is in dire need of Rhodium plating, which I am having done now. After the Rhodium plating, will it be 18K, or was I just scammed and it will always be 12K?
Answer: Well, gold is mix of metals, & depending on certain amount from each metal, carat/purity is calculated. For white gold, there r Nickel white golds & Palladium white golds.
Plating is just a finishing step, it's not gold! If u have a 12K piece, it'll always stay 12K.

How to extract Gold, Platinum, RHODIUM from "Black Sand" ore concentrate?
I have access to a large amount of "Black Sand ore concentrate, which has assays showing extremely large concentrations of Gold, Platinum and Rhodium. But many people say it is worthless because it is "impossible" to extract the precious metals from the junk (especially Iron).
Can the precious metals be extracted at all?
If they can be extracted, can it be done profitably?
Answer: What do you mean by a large quantity? 1 kg, 1 tonne, 1 million tonnes?
In the mining business, we usaully don't look at anything unless there's at least 10 million tons, but for an indvidual hobbyist a few kilo's could be interesting.
If the gold and platinum are "free" (IE, not tied up with refractory minerals like arsenopyrite), by far the simplest way to separate gold and platinum from black sand is by gravity. There are many types of sluice boxes and spiral jigs commercially available, or you can build your own. Or you can use a shaker table. These methods all work becasue the gold and platinum are heavier then the black sand which is essentially magnetite.
You can also separate gold with cyanide leaching, with or without roasting. This is complex and beyond the abilities of a hobbyist.
Profit will depend on amount, grade, grain size, mineralogy, metallurgy, energy costs, environmental considerations, and many other factors.
To have native Rhodium in black sand would be highly unusual.

How is the exchange of RHODIUM taxed by the IRS?
If someone invests in Rhodium and makes a considerable profit over the years, how is the sale taxed by the IRS? Does it have to be sold to be taxed? What if its a short term investment (< 1 year) I hear that gold is taxed as a collectible at around 28% but I cant find too much information on Rhodium. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Answer: Rhodium would be taxed as a collectible the same way that gold is. That means that short-term gains are taxed as regular income, long-term gains are taxed as regular income with a maximum rate of 28%.
You would only pay tax on Rhodium when you sell it.
Incidentally, this is one of those big problems investing in precious metal bullion. If you invest in futures contracts, your gains are taxed using 1256 treatment which is really favorable if you are trading it short-term as 40% of the gain is long-term gain taxed at 15% even if you hold for 5 minutes. That means the after-tax gains from gold is much better from futures contracts than bullion (and of course transactions costs are really high on bullion). If an underlier can be priced based on one investment that gives much better after-tax treatment than another, why would you trade it in a disadvantaged way?
There are of course no Rhodium futures, however.

why is RHODIUM used to plate cheap jewelry if it is expensive?
Working on a sci project, and i need help! From one source i read that Rhodium is one of the most expensive metals in the world, and then in another, i read that it is used to plate cheap costume jewelry to give the appearance of silver. Thank you in advance!
Answer: You need to understand that Rhodium plating is extremely thin. The total amount of metal that will be plated to the base metal is minuscule so the cost is very low.
It is used because it won 't tarnish and is quite hard wearing.

Can the RHODIUM plate on my 18K yellow gold ring be taken off?
Hi,
My beautiful 18K yellow gold ring has been accidentially plated with Rhodium. The ring has two diamonds and a ruby. Is there a process that could be done to the ring to remove the Rhodium and bring back the yellow color? I know that Rhodium resists higher temperatures than gold, and there is no acid that will make only Rhodium react without affecting the gold.
Thank you!
Answer: It is very difficult to "accidentally" Rhodium plate a ring. And removing the Rhodium is even more difficult. It would have to be buffed off, but this could be detrimental to fine details in the ring. If it has a nicely patterned top I would suggest leaving it white, and just buffing back the ring shank back to the original color.
Rhodium plating enhances the color of rubies and diamonds, but if you do want it removed be prepared for added cost or time, if you are doing it yourself.
