im just really curious as to whether or not anyone is freaked out about these predictions they keep making of 2012. the thought of the world coming to an end in two years is a really scary thing and also a difficult thing to ignore. honestly they shouldnt have made a movie in regards to that because its only going to scare people more. anyone else agree?
Answer: IMO the whole 2012 doomsday phenomenon is just a bunch of BS, and people are overreacting (no offense to you...just people in general). The Mayan calendar that the theory is based on never stated that the world was going to end, the calendar itself simply ended. Most of the people I know don't think nor care that the end if going to end in 2012. Besides, people thought the world was fucked in Y2K and nothing happened so the same thing is probably going to happen this time.

First off, I will say that I dont believe that 2012 will be any different of a year than any other one. I am asking about how people will react when the year finally comes around. With all of the media that this so called "prophecy" has gotten, dont you think that people will go to great lengths to try and stop it, since they "know" that it will happen? Or, on the other hand, will people go to great lengths to make something happen in an attempt to fulfill the predictions?
Answer: Almost none. One of several Mayan calendars is the Long Count calendar, which is reset to day 0 every 1,872,000 days or 7057.5 years. The next reset date, by some calculations, is December 21, 2012. This is not a prediction of the end of the world. These predictions are scare tactics, conspiracy theories, and chances to make money from books and movies. Ever since the Y2K and 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) End of the World scenarios did not pan out, the scare mongers, conspiracy theorists, book sellers, and television executives have been touting the 2012 End of the World scenario. When 2012 does not happen either, I am sure they will think of something else. "But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come." (Mark 13:32-33) Jesus told us in no uncertain terms that we were not to know when the end of the world would come but that we were always to be ready. The early Christian Church thought that Jesus was going to return at any moment. Only after a couple of centuries did the Church realize that it may be 2,000 or 4,000 or 8,000 years before Jesus returns. The Catholic Church wisely follows Jesus' advice and teaches that each of us should live as if we will meet our maker in the next ten minutes and that we need to work to make the world a better place for our 100 X great-grandchildren. Do not worry about the end of the world. Trust God to make sure everything happens to plan. Just be ready to meet God at any time. Not sure if I believe any of the predictions, but it fascinates me how people are taking these predictions more seriously than the past ones.
Answer: To anyone capable of rational thought, they are not realistic at all. Compared with other end of the world predictions they are some of the most ludicrous ever dreamed up. Planet X/Nibiru - no sign of it. Pole shift - not physically possible before or during 2012. Solar storm - solar activity now expected to be lower than at the last maximum in 2001. Any planetary or solar alignment - doesn't have the slightest effect on us. And so it goes on until all the claims are dismissed and there is nothing left to distinguish 2012 from 2013, 2014, etc., in other words - just another year.

This is the last day of the calendar. Now, for the record. The mayans survived a lot of environmental devastation, and they were very good at mapping the seasons and stars. The bad weather and environmental issues are just a few of the things they predicted when they based their calendar off of what they had seen personally. Also, they say there will be a great change for humanity. This is not, let me repeat, NOT a Armageddon prophecy. They just believe that people will advance. However, hollywood has to sensationalize things and they have convinced people that 2012 is the end of the world, just like they tried to convince people that Nostradamus predicted the end of the world in 2000. How do Christians feel about the New Age end of world predictions for 2012?

The 2012 end of the world predictions are based on the change of cycles in the Mayan Calendar. I thought end of world predictions was an area "owned" by Christianity, and promoted to get people to read the bible and donate to Christian charities.. So I wonder how they feel by others encroaching on their "territory". How would Christians feel if signs of the end of the world coming seemed to precede the 2012 date? Did you know that Moses predicted 3500 years ago that the Jews would rebel against God, be scattered to the all the nations, and in the last days be regathered to the land of their forefathers? Did you know the Jewish prophets - Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos, Ezekiel, Daniel and others; even the the Lord Jesus Christ - all these foretold these days we are living it right now? Jesus said "This Gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the world as a witness to all nations; and then THE END will come" ? But "the end" is not a sudden cessation, but a series of events that will turn this world upside down. Jesus described it in these words...... "For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again. “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened." Matthew 24:21-22 The focal point of all these prophecies is the City of Jerusalem. Forces are at work at this moment to wrest away Jerusalem from the control of the Jews; and it could very well result in the armies of the nations being gathered against Jerusalem; and the very battle, or battles predicted in the Bible coming to pass. I personally think its a bunch of crap. Since people are scared,the whole scheme is to get money money money. People will get Christmas or Hanukkah presents a couple of years before 2012 and waste money over a silly rumor. There have been lots of "End of the World" predictions before...why believe it now?
Answer: I thought there was some kind of planetary alignment that at best would mess with our tides. However, I cannot even find any articles supporting this. One article interviewed a scientist who pointed out his desk calendar expired on December 31. However, he did not freak out and take it as a sign of armageddon.

What do you think about the 2012 doomsday predictions?

I just watched a show on the History Channel (I think) about the 2012 Doomsday predictions. I had never even heard of such a prediction outside of the Bible, but the show did list several sources for the reasoning behind the demise of the Earth around that time. I am most interested in the Scientific basis for the theory. It stated in that program that in the year 2012 that the Earth and Sun will be at the center of the Milky Way, and will cross over the universes "equator" and, this change will force the Earth to change the magnetic polarity of our North and South Poles. (North pole will register South, and visa versa). This monumental change would create widespread havock on our planet. Causing worldwide mass extinctions, volcanos, and earthquakes. (They stated that the planet has in fact changed its magnetic polarity before, 800 million years ago). It was an eye opening program to watch. Any thoughts?! I forgot to mention, that in the program they said that by the Sun and Earth ( and I guess the rest of our Solor System etc.) crossing over this galactic equator, It will cause the sun to have extreme solor storms that emit much more radiation, destroying more of our satalllites. In fact, scientific predictions, ( and warnings) say 2012 will be an active solor year. Who really knows what will happen when the sun crosses over. Lets keep in mind that whatever effects the sun, ultimately effects us here on Earth. Thanks for your thoughts! Yeah, I guess that you have to believe that the center is going to be reached/crossed in or around 2012, to make the prediction even possible. Thanks! : )
Answer: To begin, the History Channel show did not say that "...Earth and Sun will be at the center of the Milky Way..." The center of the galaxy is 25,000 light years away from Earth, so it would take at least 25,000 years for us to get there even if we could move at the speed of light, which we can't. You also said that the TV show said that "...will cross over the universe's "equator" and, this change will force the Earth to change the magnetic polarity of our North and South Poles..." You probably meant the equator of our *galaxy,* not the universe. Even so, there's no scientific basis in the silly assumption that crossing the galactic equator is going to do anything to Earth. The doomsday prophecy that's sprouted from the Mayan calendar is just so much nonsense. 2012 is nothing more than the end of the current Mayan calendar, no more or less.
