MEMO FROM SOUTH KOREA; To Sell a New Leader, North Korea Finds A Mirror Is Handy
SEOUL, South Korea -- When Kim Jong-un made his debut as the North Korean heir apparent in September 2010, he looked so much like his grandfather, the closest thing North Koreans had to a god, that South Korean intelligence officials noted that many North Koreans who saw the young man for the first time on television broke down in tears. What would happen if North Korea declared war?
North Korea made news recently saying that if UN put sanctions on the country they would declare war. Personally I think if they did China should have the guts (if they really want to be a global leader) to stand up and crush them. But if they dont I think the USA would be in a difficult situation seeing as we already are in two wars and North Korea has an army of over 1 million. What would happen?
Answer: US won't commit their ground forces to fight the NK, they will most likely provide the SK forces with Air support and protect the SK Air space while the SK air forces conduct bombing and strikes within NK zones. For China they will most likely look for a Diplomatic solution out of the problem but most likely will fail. China will most likely hold their forces back at the border to either prevent or control the mass of NK refuges flooding into northern china.
For Seoul's condition will be hard to say due to it's proximity to the DMZ, it won't be destroyed or occupied by the NK army as current SK army is different from their counter-part 50 years ago. The current SK army is a well trained and well equipped army that is capable to withstand NK army attacks. What I think will be that SK government will allows "some" damage to Seoul in order to gather worldwide sympathy and also gather support for it's self defense invasion of NK.
As for some will argue that China will support NK in attacking SK and US, I say is highly impossible as China today is a Capitalist country not a Communist Country, plus with the recent success of several world events like the 2008 Olympic and the recent 2010 Shanghai World Expo and their success in their economy, China is now part of the Greater world Society and won't do anything like supporting NK in attacking SK which will paint themselves in a bad picture.
What I most worry is that NK decide to damage China's Economy instead, yes NK threaten to turn SK into a sea of blood but even if they do, will it damage the Asian overall economy? I don't think so, yes SK's economy and large but not as large as China. Damage to China's economy will be more damaging to the world than damaging SK's one and NK know this fact well.
Lastly what I think will happen is that the fighting will most likely be limited to the DMZ and air strikes into NK and limited movement into NK over the DMZ once the the border troops are weaken enough to create a large buffer zone between Seoul and the broader. SK may be tempted to move further into NK and attack Pyongyang directly thus unified the country but may not choose to do so as out of fear of the amount of civilian casualties that it might cause plus damage to the north infrastructure and also wait for China's stance of the war and also possible diplomatic outcome. SK may actually use the slow en-roaching of army as a playing card to force NK ruling elite to surrender and thus unified the nation. Plus China may decide to test their military strength by sending in as Peace Keepers against NK forces to secure the nuclear sites and missile sites to prevent NK from firing the weapons into the nearby regions and also to control the tide of refugees but fighting will be limited.
End of the day, there is a good chance that the Korean peninsular will be unified under SK government but how long the war will last is anyone guess but i guess it will be under 1 year or 2 but the aftermath stability of the northern region will be very long as there will be several NK general that refuse to surrender and continue the resistance and forming into local terrorism or rebel army harnessing the SK army and possibility the Peacekeeping forces that is supporting SK forces.

Is there any proof besides news reports about North Korea setting off nukes last weekend?
Pictures or anything? Who reported it first? What does ths mean? What countries are in jeopardy? Looking for educated answers. Just dont know much about the whole situation and the stories are making me nervous.
Answer: The only proof is that N. Korea admitted to testing the bomb in an underground facility, the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) also recorded tremors which they reported as an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 on the same day.
Several countries can be at risk but S. Korea is an unlikely target because they are so close to the North that the North would likely contaminate themselves.
China would be at risk as would be the US. The biggest danger though is that North Korea would sell nuclear devices to terrorist organizations since they (North Korea) do not have a great deal of money.
North Korea already has a number of UN sanctions against them and are likely to get more extreme sanctions placed against them. This will further punish the citizens who are powerless against the government.

Why is North Korea being taken off the "bLack L!st"? As no Longer a Nuclear Threat? GOOD NEWS?
I kept hearing about that in the news but is North Korea finally going towards a path of peace or appeasement?
Answer: While it's a good thing, Kim Jong-il is not a trustworthy man.
North Korea is desperate for food and goods. Being off the "Black List" will allow the USA to provide both to them. I worry, though, if Kim Jong-il will go back to his old ways once he gets what he wants from us. It wouldn't be the first time.
Also, we have to worry because he's not going to be around forever. Who will be in charge after he's gone? North Korea has nuclear weapons and have not been our friend. We're in alot of trouble if they team up with Iran or other non-friendly countries against us... especially if we're still bogged down in the Middle East.
