The Protester
No one could have known that when a Tunisian fruit vendor set himself on fire in a public square, it would incite protests that would topple dictators and start a global wave of dissent. In 2011, protesters didn’t just voice their complaints; they changed the world.

What is up with Time magazine making the person of the year YOU?
Hey, Im an American living in England and I just wonder what depth have been reached in imagination that TIME magazine has a mirror on its cover for December and the person of the year is you and you and you and you and even ME if I buy their cheesy magazine. What is up with that anyway...?
Answer: The American establishment is puzzled what to do. There was the year when they had to face up to Vietnam, this year they've had to face up to Iraq. They ended the year allowing their erstwhile protege to be executed. Well you could hardly declare either Bush or Saddam "Person of the Year" - they've both been defeated. Yes, Time ought to have had the courage, the capacity and the perception to have discerned who the catalyst of change was. Who has taken strides towards the Presidency? Barak Obama, Hillary Clinton? The U.K., France? The U.N. Unacceptable changes everywhere. They have opted out.
It is only with hindsight that one can tell whose influence was decisive. Time may have abdicated responsibilities even when the War in Vietnam was over. It was the Baby Boomers who did it - then known as the Flower Power Generation, headed by the much older Senator Eugene McCarthy. Did they pick him, or Dr Benjamin Spock, or Noam Chomsky.
Come to think of it, Chomsky's still with us, and still active. They could have given it to him. Or to that thirteen year old Amish girl who who offered to get shot first, and had that wish (?) fulfilled. It is still the American perspective that dominates, but they'd have to pick one out from outside the establishment.
In other words one has to go for the extra-ordinary American; Karma Chimaera you are one of them. Few Americans seem able to say they, their country, or their activities, are ordinary. If there are more like you, you give the world some hope.
I know I have raised more questions than answered. But I don't aspire to rule the world. On the other hand, if I controlled Time I would have used that influence to have highlighted the efforts of someone like Chomsky.
As for Time, they have used technology (the mirror gimmick) to opt out.

Remember the person of the year of Time magazine last year?
It was in august last year when the managing editor of Time magazine US came to talk to me.
He wanted a suggestion for the person of the year and explained to me that it was about a person who had made the news in good or bad. It struck me that nobody had been particullarly relevant so i answered: you! Me, he asked? No, not you, You! And i presented my case, that we internautes are making the news and that we are even better than the professionals since we are everywhere, we see almost everything and we work for free. Also, i told him about putting in the cover some kind of reflecting material so that the reader could see himself, some way to reward these who buy the magazine. The guy offered me in exchange for the idea a 6 months free suscription which i declined saying that i dont want to be influenced by the American point of vue.
Answer: yep, l remember that cover, l thought it was unique.

Why did time magazine name Adolf Hitler person of the year?
In 1938 Time magazine named Adolf Hitler person of the year. Why?
Answer: Time magazine, the controlled press of the State, is often used to praise dictators, and demonize anyone whom the State chooses to vilify. A good example of this would the demonization of Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua. He was elected President of Nicaragua in 1984, and is still the President of Nicaragua today.

Why was Osama Bin Laden not voted TIME MAGAZINE PERSON OF THE YEAR in 2001?
Im writing a school paper on Time Man/Person of The Year.
I thought the idea was that the award to the person who had had the most influence of the year, be it good or bad. Why was Rudi Giuliani voted man of the year? Bin Laden may be evil, but given that he kick started the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, hes probably more infulential than Rudi.
Answer: Because he would have been unlikely to turn up to collect the award and say a few words at the Presentation Dinner.
