What is the chance of dying during a HEART TRANSPLANT?
Me girlfriend is having Heart transplant surgery tomorrow, and I was wondering how much risk she is in of dying during the surgery. I know what her chances are after the surgery, but Im talking about dying on the operating table. Im really worried that Im gonna lose her, shes already come so far (you can tell just by looking at my other questions) and I cant lose her now. I would really appreciate if someone gives me a straight awnser, and no bullshit trolling. Thank you in advance.
Answer: The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) records many statistics. One is the # and percentage of people who are removed from the transplant waiting list who needed a heart translant. According to their website 0.1% of the people who were removed died during the transplant procedure.
I'm not sure if that is exactly what you needed, but it is the best I could find.
A much higher percentage is that about 16% of the removals were because people died while they were waiting (while perfectly good organs were buried; don't get me started on people who refuse to be organ donors).
It should make you feel better though that she is getting a transplant - if she was not, the chance of her dying would be 100%. Personal experience showed me that the first few months can be a bit rough, but it's all worth it. It's just a whole new life. Thank God for organ donors and their families.

Why do patients who receive a HEART TRANSPLANT not live a complete lengthy life?
Ask the title says, why do people who receive a Heart transplant not have a normal life expectancy?
I know that theyre constantly at battle with having their bodies reject them, but why does the heart eventually just not do its job?
Answer: Hi, great question. I wondered this too for a while. Basically in transplants, your body is always rejecting the organ. So your body is constantly mounting an immune response towards that organ.
Their are actually 4 types of transplant rejection.
Hyperacute- As soon as you put the organ in, it pretty much dies.
Acute- which occurs weeks after the organ is put in.
Chronic rejection is the one that people hope for and is the one you're referring to. This takes months to years to occur. Basically their is an immune response occurring that causes scarring to that organ and eventually makes it useless. So in the case of a Heart transplant, it becomes scarred to the point where it's unable to pump to meet the needs of the body. To lengthen the functioning of these organs what a person has to do is lower the immune response to the body. That's why a lot of transplant patients are on cortico steriods that inhibit or lower the human immune response. But it kind of becomes a balancing act because by lowering the immune response, these patients are now susceptible to illnesses that most people wouldn't even be bothered by.
Graft vs. Host Disease- The 4th type of rejection that occurs when the organ actually causes an immune response to the patient.
Hope this answers your question

How long can a heart and kidney transplant recipient be expected to live until?
A friend of mine had a Heart transplant 8 years ago, and she just received a kidney. she is 20 years old. How do you feel about Dick Chaney getting a HEART TRANSPLANT?
There are very few donated hearts out there available for transplant. Do you think someone younger or nicer would have been more deserving of the heart?
Answer: Age matters and they do want younger people first, however, you have to have a match. You can't just transplant any heart into any body. It's really based on the best match. He waited 20 months with a device that took the pressure off his heart. He could have died in those 20 months, like anyone else. They found a good match for his DNA. It has nothing to do with age. There were probably other hearts that were a good match and went to younger people. They can't give him preference. If they did, he would not have waited nearly 2 years. It's a matter of luck and if the right donor comes along that matches your DNA better than any other one out there waiting. We need more people to donate on their driver's license. There are actually more hearts available than people waiting, but not enough matches. If you have yet more people who donate, then more matches would come up. Thank goodness people donate and God bless them for that.

What are the chances of a 14 year old surviving a HEART TRANSPLANT?
My friend is getting a Heart transplant this weekend, and I am really worried. He is my age, only 14 years old, but he has to either have that or a pacemaker, and he chose the transplant, because he says that although the risks are high, he would live longer, because a pacemaker can shorten his life by 30 years. However, he didnt tell me the chances of him surviving the transplant, and I would really appreciate it if someone told me. Thank you.
Answer: he must not be too exited or too scared/nervous of transplant. chances of surviving are high than dying. just take special care of him after and before trnasplant..

How Many HEART TRANSPLANT Surgeons Are There?
Ive always wanted to be a doctor and possibly a Heart and Lung Transplant one. However, I realized that there are only 2,200 Heart transplants done in the US every year. Are there a lot of transplant surgeons? How many Heart transplant surgeons are there? Thanks in advance!
Answer: You can call a Heart/Lung transplant surgeon a Cardiothoracic surgeon for simplicity's sake. :P
Quite frankly, there are very few. Not sure on the numbers, but let me tell you why are there are very few:
1) 4 years of College with top notch grades - Required.
2) 4 years of Medical school with top notch USMLE scores - Required.
3) 5 years of a general surgery residency - Required.
4) ~2 years of Cardiothoracic surgery residency - Required.
5) 1-2 years of Cardiothoracic surgery fellowship (i.e. you can specialize in adult or child cardiothoracic surgery or Heart transplants) - Required for Heart transplanting.
6) Beginning with step 2, you will suffer grueling grueling GRUELING study nights/late calls/horrible residents that treat you like trash/and then working ~80hrs/week averaging ~$12/hour.
7) Cardiothoracic residencies are VERY COMPETITIVE and only a handful of people make it. For example, at UCLA, about 2 doctors per year are accepted into the Cardiothoracic residency program.
Beginning with step 3 above, you'll start off making ~35K and it'll go up as the years go by.

Answer: Hi There,
The first Heart transplants followed upon both the development of cardiosurgery and the first successful kidney transplant in 1963. The first Heart transplant, which used a heart from a chimpanzee, occurred in 1964, but was a failure. Christian Barnard, a cardiothoracic surgeon in Cape Town, South Africa, performed the first Heart transplant from a human donor in 1967. His patient died 18 days after the operation because his body rejected the transplant.
Difficulties
Barnard and other doctors continued to try Heart transplantation, but rejection and infection dogged their efforts. According to Lawrence Cohn, 99 Heart transplants took place in the year after Barnard's first attempt, but the difficulties and high mortality rate persuaded most to give up the practice. Furthermore, public fears erupted during the 1960s over how donor organs, including hearts, would be obtained; the worry was that accident victims who were organ donors would have their deaths hurried along.

Can a person with congestive heart failure get a HEART TRANSPLANT at age 76?
76 year old person with 15% functioning heart & defribrillator - seems a Heart transplant would be a good option but the doctors say no. Why?
Wow, so this is all about the money and the insurance companies? That really ticks me off.
Thanks Danny. Im on here asking for my father who is 76. Hes had a bypass, and is in and out of the hospital what seems like every 4-6 months because of fluid buildup. I wish you the best also.
Answer: No, contrary to common opinion it is not the cost at all. In our practice we routinely refer patients for valve surgeries in their 80's and 90's, - if they are a good candidate. Having a severe cardiomyopathy with an EF of 15% identifies that the heart is not the only issue here. Does he have advanced diabetes, hypertension, uncontrolled hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis? Likely. Did he smoke for years and he has COPD / asthma / pulmonary hypertension? Likely. These are reasons which would make transplant surgery very unlikely to be successful.
The primary reason, is SUPPLY. There are so many kids, young adults waiting for hearts that never have the chance for Heart transplant simply because there are not enough available. It is impossible to justify getting a heart to transplant (legally) into a 76 year old whom had a long life. How could anyone justify telling the 13 yr old with congential heart disease he can't get a heart because his was given to a 76 yr old whom could pay for it? It is NOT about the money at all, just the opposite.
