Is it odd to wear a kimono to the CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL in DC?

I was planning on going to the Cherry blossom festival in DC this year. And I was hoping that some people who have been there before could tell me if it is odd to see someone wearing a kimono (who isnt Asian). I was thinking of wearing one but I dont want to stand out too much. Could someone help me out here?
Answer: Well, if you don't want to stand out, then being a non-Japanese wearing kimono in ANY situation (no matter where you are) is a bad idea. It's pretty much an automatic guarantee that you will stand out. If you don't mind too much, see if you can get a nice spring-appropriate komon or iromuji and nagoya obi to wear. You might also want to see if you can get some friends to join you, and visit the Immortal Geisha forums and see if anyone there is planning a kimono meet-up for sometime during the festival that you could join.

Answer: According to this chart, the cherry blossoms begin opening in Sapporo around May 5 every year: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2011_when.html It does vary from year to year, but that's still a pretty good estimate. Blossoms don't last long -- I think the season is about two weeks long -- so if you plan to be there a few days after they're supposed to start opening you should get to see a lot of blossoms.

Answer: Yesh~ You need to register (the limit is 100 people so if you are going in a group then you better get some forms~).The parade starts off at San Francisco City Hall then makes its way to J-town! And I think this is before but It might be after the parade, but there is a costume contest! Theres a little anime shop in the wing with all the cafes 'n stuff. they gots a table in fronts of it with a buncha picturez of last years cosplay parade and talent show~ the link should update sometime within February~ :D

How do I decorate for a CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL party?

I am hosting a fundraiser dinner party for relief efforts in Japan. The theme will be Cherry blossom festival. We are on an incredibly limited budget and I was wondering if anyone had any quick, relatively cheap ideas on how to decorate? Thanks!
Answer: I don't know what the party area will look like...(lots of separate tables? one large food table? reception table? etc)...so I will throw some ideas out there and maybe there's something you can work with. Since real cherry blossoms only last for a week, you can purchase artificial ones at craft stores...taking a large vase and grouping several tall branches makes an impressive look, imitating the actual trees. Sometimes you can even add little white lights to the branches. You can float tea lights in clear smaller vases around it...tint the water? or even submerge other flowers that carry the color theme (and spring theme) in the water....so let's pick a color scheme: Colors like chocolate brown, pink and sage green work well....adding cream is popular, too. The "other" flowers can be pink tulips or carnations to float in the water. If you wanted....there are paper lanterns with the cherry blossom theme on them...check Amazon or thepaperlantern.com and google sites for them if you have the time and money.....or if local stores (Pier I...Oriental Trading Co., etc) have solid pinks and whites to hang up around the area. There is party ware available when you search in brides' sections on the net....but you can use solid plates, napkins in the colors theme (alternating them, fanning them out for appetizer or buffet)...if more formal, then folding them fancy & adding a small cluster of fake cherry blossoms on the napkin>> http://bumblebeelinens.com/napkinFolding.php A colored table runner can be layered on the tablecloth(s)....just get inexpensive material, cut with pinking sheers to keep from raveling and lay on the cloth. The tall centerpieces of branches will look very impressive! Answer: It is generally around the Tidal Basin area and the Potomac River that is beside the Jefferson Memorial. My advice is not to go. I attended the festival a few years ago and it was just a sea of toursists; I couldn't move. If you want to see DC in it's most beautiful colors, I would suggest late October to early November, when the leaves change.

Answer: take as many pics as you can and upload them to istock like everyone else. get a business card sized model release and ask everyone you meet to sign it as you take their pic. give them a different card that says where they can find the photo online. there are lots of websites where they can buy prints and you make money from those sales.

When is the best time to visit the CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL?

Is it during the peak blooming day? The week after? Are the crowds worth it?
Answer: The crowds thin out when the Festival is over, but the blossoms usually last another week, or so. That is unless we have winds and heavy rain. Then you're out of luck. Some years the crowds are worse than others, of course, and it is impossible to predict. My suggestion would be to check the extended weather forecast and plan to arrive a bit early or a day or two late. The trees are still gorgeous (weather permitting) and the crowds are not so bad.

What to do in D.C. for CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL?

Im thinking about planning a trip to washington D.C Aroud April for the Cherry blossom festivals. Where would be the best place to stay centered to the parade and any of the attraction? What lenght of time would be good to go? What else is good to see in the D.C or eighboring states? should i rent a car or is public trans. available? any help would be greatly appreciated thansk :)
Answer: I have lived in the DC area for about 20 years now. In the spring of 2009 I went to the cheery blossom festival for the first time. I will never do it again. The crowds are just too big to move around the Tidal Basin area near the cherry trees. It was like an ocean of humans trying to make their way slowly. It took forever to get anywhere. I would suggest you wait until May to visit DC when the weather is still nice and the crowds are much smaller.

where to stay for CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL?

I am from CA and I would like to visit Washington DC mainly because of the Cherry blossom festival. If you can give me some advices such as where to stay, when to book flight and room, where has the most stunning view of Cherry blossom festival, I would really appreciate. Thanks
Answer: The most stunning view of the cherry blossoms is in the Tidal Basin (around the water from the Jefferson Memorial to the Lincoln Memorial). There really are not any hotels right there. There might be a few hotels in Rosslyn, VA with good views but I'm not sure it would be worth paying for it. A great view of the Cherry Blossom parade will be seen from any hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue (Willard Incontinental, JW Marriot & the Hotel Washington), but you will pay, pay, pay. These hotels are among the nicest in DC & have great views of everything, in general. For a good rate on hotels, I recommend trying Arlington or Alexandria, VA. Alexandria is great because there are many hotels right next to the same Metro line that the Regan National Airport is on. In particular, King St Metro stop is in a lovely part of town and really close to good hotels. Supergreat for travelers. A lot of hotels will offer a shuttle to either the Metro or to the Mall. Be sure to ask; it can be worth its weight in gold. You do not want to drive into DC during the Cherry blossom festival if you can avoid it. Parking is hard to find & many streets are closed down at odd times. Book your flight whenever you can, but airports are not particularly busy during those weeks. Hotels, however, do book up quickly. Pack appropriately, though. The weather is very fickle in March/April. It can get very chilly, rainy, or sunny on a whim and temperatures change rapidly this time of year. Bring an umbrella & a poncho, too, in case of rain because if it does rain, the city vendors will not hesitate to overcharge you for these items. Best of luck!

Answer: There is no Cherry blossom festival per say but rather a bunch of hanami parties - cherry blossom viewing with lots of drinking on blue tarps under the blossoms. Typically it is late March to early April in Tokyo.
