LDS, Mormons, About the CITY CREEK CENTER mall "project"?
Ok, so LDS members here on YA see it as a economy booster, to make SLC more vibrant, and a well spent 4 billion to help out Salt Lake City.
(This is the most expensive mall project in the US... and the only major mall project going on in the US, according to CNBC.
And I get that point, just not this kind of building from a "church." Anyways....
My questions:
1. Do you believe that the integrity of the economy of downtown Salt Lake City is one of the most important things to God and or Jesus?
2.Do you believe that the new mall and such will close MANY businesss in Salt Lake City?
You know, mom and pop shops and such? and cause many other hard workers strife?
Answer: this idea was initiated when the malls on SLC's main street were nearing foreclosure, and nordstrom was also moving to the gateway. the community was in a dire place. all the politics, and artists, and bohemians who had tried in the past could not fix this......now consider --- temple square receives about 5 million annual visitors and is considered a tourist epicenter of SLC......
so -
1. do you believe that God wants His children to be hungry and hurt and homeless? or do you think He might be happy if those who can help them stand on their own feet would do so? people don't need hand outs.....people want to live their lives. they don't want to be charity.....they want to 'be' involved in their lives. they don't want to be spectators......they want to work and earn their place and be counted useful. they want to contribute. so the LDS church will help provide that through revitalizing the community both residentially and commercially. so the LDS church takes a responsible effort in it's own communities. darn that church that cares for it's members.....so yea. I think God and Jesus would be happy with people trying to help people without stomping all over each other's self-worth and value.
2. not really, no. when the gateway was built - and trax run right out to it........most business transferred from downtown SLC to the gateway anyway - driving some out of business along the way, and driving some to move out of downtown to stay afloat. in short - there just isn't anything left downtown to suffer closing @the hands of this new mall. if they have survived so far - they will certainly survive bringing more people into the are to shop and eat and support the economy.....no matter how hard you try to make this a bad thing - revitalizing a community is not. it's a good thing......even if it's "the mormons" who are doing it.
if you could get past that , you could see the value instead.

Novotel Deira City Centre or Marriot Executive Deluxe Apartments Creek in Dubai?
Our family of 5 are planning to travel to Dubai. Kids are ages 7 month, 2 yrs and 3 yrs. We have these two choices: Novotel is opp the Shopping Mall but is a hotel without all the amenities that we need. Marriot is expensive, but an all inclusive apartment and more comfortable, but far from the Shopping Mall. Advice?
Answer: I don't know much about the Novotel but DCC is a big mall though an older one, all the usual mall shops are there. There is also a metro station underground.
Also never seen the Creek Marriot , I know the JW Marriot hotel in Deira is located on Abu Baker Al Siddique road not near the creek though. It is right in the middle of Deira. It will not be so convenient for the new malls like Dubai Malls or Ibn Batutta Mall will take 30 minutes drive at minimum from there.

How About Gardening or Golfing at the Mall?
Clevelands Galleria at Erieview, like many malls across the country, is suffering. Closed on weekends because there are so few visitors, it is down to eight retail stores, eight food-court vendors and a couple of businesses like the local bar association. So part of the glass-covered mall is being converted into a vegetable garden. I look at it - Urban planners and community activists across the country are attempting to find different uses outside of retail stores for the vacant spaces left in malls; vacancy rates in malls are at near-record levels due to both the worst recession since the advent of malls and competition with the Internet. Where may I find the revelation to build the CITY CREEK CENTER, in Salt Lake City?
LDS Church leaders have been inspired to build a resplendant Mall complex in downtown SLC.
Where is the revelation published, revealing this as the word of the Lord, in regard to His desire concerning the tithing funds of the Saints?
Also, will a store called The Golden Calf actually be next to a Subway Sandwich shop there?

Hey, was the ZCMI Center ever remodeled in the 80s or the 90s (like especially in the food court)?
Yeah, a few of you would know about the ZCMI center in Salt Lake City. Of course, now most of it is getting demolished for the City creek center, but theyll keep a little of it in the end.
It just seems to me that there was a time when either they didnt have a food court (but just separate restaurants around), or that they always did but remodeled it. Or it seems like they used to just have a main cafeteria (like one generic or generic-like restaurant). But I cant remember for sure. Do you guys remember?
Was there a time in the late 80s or early 90s when food courts became the big new thing in malls, that malls from the 70s didnt originally have?
Hey, will you come back and see my responses to your answers, please?
Thanks,
Mike
Answer: I've never been to Salt Lake City, so I can't answer most of your question - Sorry.
But I did work at a few malls in the 70's and you are right. There were no "food courts".
We had a family style Luby's type cafeteria, an Orange Julius, a Walgreens diner, Arthur Treachers Fish and Chips,
and a Carmel Korn Store. These were all stores, not in the middle of the mall. I haven't thought of all this in years!

LDS, Mormons, About the CITY CREEK CENTER Mall and morals?
Ok so the LDS church owns the property and the mall... Even say they "lease" spaces to stores in the mall.
The project will turn out to be quite an expensive one..
So LDS members (and leadership) talk quite a bit about standing up for your morals and getting blessings for it. OK thats good and fine.
My questions...
1. Now the LDS church itself is going out of their way to be able to serve alcohol on church owned property, how is changing the liquor laws justified?
See..http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705366083/Restaurant-liquor-license-bill-passes-Utah-House.html
2.So normally the LDS church would be against more liquor licenses handed out but not if they NEED them, correct?
ALSO there will be many stores that will be selling clothing that the LDS church would not approve of their membership wearing.
3. IF it goes against what you stand for and what you preach is GODs will....BUT, if it puts money in your pocket its ok? Is this LDS business venture a "DO as I say, and not as I DO?"
Can you address 1,2 and 3? Thank You
Answer: Just giving the suckers what they want in true Mormon tradition!

I know that the destruction of the building is part of the contruction of the City creek center. However, will there be a new building for ZCMI mall? Or is it gone for good? Does the Church run it or gave up?

WWJD (W$5B) - What would Jesus do with $5 Billion?
if jesus had anything to do with the mormon church, he would build a shopping mall.
http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=19428181&title=a-look-inside-as-city-creek-centers-completion-nears&s_cid=featured-1
but, I think we can all agree that Jesus has little, if anything, to do with the Mormons
so.... what would a decent christian church spend $5 Billion on?
I see the two mormon answerers are as ignorant as most mormons
the church is financing the project... thats why the presiding bishop oversaw the project.......duh
hinckley is the one who approved the project
well, I guess that SLC desperatley needs a great and spacious building.......I cant argue with that.
and, there is a possibility that this mall may buck the trend that most savvy investors have foreseen - the downturn in mall investment return. I am sure that all the utard mormons will shop in the jesus mall - if they still have any pennies in their purses what with the economy and repeated calls for new finance (on top of the 10%) from their church.
personally, I am seriously happy that there are a few decent restaurants selling alcohol in the jesus mall - if I ever return there, i may even stop in for a steak and a beer............pity there arent any starbucks (yet)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_Creek_Center
http://www.salamandersociety.com/mall/
It is estimated that the LDS church has given $750,000,000 to charitable causes in the entire history of the church itself. Why do they want a mall, and why would they not use this money to help others than to gain financial profit?

LDS, Mormons about members cleaning the church buildings?
LDS members are asked to clean the chapels.
Bathrooms, Kitchens, Foyers etc.. Its called the meetinghouse maintenance program.
There is a schedule (even on Saturdays) for the specific time you are to be there.
This goes along with members cleaning the outside of temples (when needed) also.
These members are usually tithe payers that already give quite a huge amount of free time to their church callings and such.
Then they are expected to give extra work, while the LDS church building billion dollar malls. (City creek center in SLC)
This project is about up to 4 billion.
When did the LDS stop hiring custodians?
(Many jobs were lost due to this)
Why cant they PAY for custodial services? When they have the money...and already expect time and tithing much from members.
Thoughts?
Is it the Economy?
Dont you think it looks worse for the church to be spending billions of dollars on a mall during a recession than it does for them to pay janitors and at least be providing employment to those people?
Project Vetta, Wheres your shirt?
geez :)
Slcbtf, This act took away many peoples jobs. All for the members (that already give far too much time and money to this organization) to do the dirty work.
Yes, many members are miffed about it)
In Utah, sure you might be on the schedule once or twice a year, but in other areas it once a week.
That takes even more time away from a persons family or personal time. But thats the way the LDS church likes it....Busy busy busy!
Hunner, Rant perhaps? Now we know what members really think about the handouts,....Not that it was a big secret..:)
Answer: Why is it any of your business? It isnt your money and it isnt your time.
I am sorry you are such a self centered person that you cant see the value in personal service to an organization that blesses a persons lives in more ways than your shallow being can possibly understand.
Perhaps one day you will understand it and realize just how ridiculous you sound right now by asking this question. Asking people why they should bother doing service just shows how immature you really are. Trying to get people upset because they are asked to do service demonstrates your total lack of understanding of the nature and purpose of service.
You also clearly have no clue just how often people are asked to clean the building, so maybe you shouldnt talk about things (once again) that you dont understand.
My membership in the church has given more to me in my life than I can ever repay. I owe my Savior my life and if all he asks in return is some time, a small percentage of my money, and personal effort in return, well I will GLADLY give it. If you can't understand this, then I feel sorry for you and really hope one day you will understand it.
People like you seriously make me just shake my head. You just dont get it and you dont get that nothing you say will ever affect anyone that really does get it. It is like listening to a 5 year old try to argue why they are right and you are wrong. You just realize they are immature and dont have the correct experience and understanding to realize that their little temper tantrum really doesnt do any good and doesnt make the parent rethink their position because the parent knows that they know better than the 5 year old.

Things to do in Dubai when youre pregnant?
We are finally going on our honeymoon - half a world away, to Dubai. Wed planned this for a while, with dreams of dune bashing, indoor skiing, and other ridiculous pursuits one can only really appreciate in the Emirates. But it appears well be bringing along another - by the time we get to Dubai in September, I will be almost three months pregnant.
What are some good early-pregnant-friendly things to do in Dubai that we might enjoy? Obviously the bars/clubs are out, and Im not sure what desert adventures would really be practical. Wed like to see cool things but not totally break the budget (no, were not staying at Burj-al-Arab, but thanks for asking). Our hotel is near the Deira City Center, so for the most part wed like to stick around Deira, Dubai City, some of the creek areas, etc. Were definitely keen on checking out the Souks and other interesting shopping stuff. Reasonably-priced but intruiging dining is definitely on the agenda.
For what its worth, this is our first pregnancy, so were still getting used to a lot of the "dos" and "donts" - and finding out theres a whole lot of "donts."
If youve been there, please be sure to give us as much first-hand experience as possible! Thanks!
Answer: Congrat to your pregnancy.
Please don't miss visiting Dubai Museum. Alternativley to a day dune bashing you may take a trip to Abu Dhabi. It's 1,5 hrs away and a modern airconditioned RTA bus carries you for AED 25 per person one way directly into the centre of Abu Dhabi. In Abu Dhabi you could get on a Big Bus Tour for AED 250 per person all day long. Get off at any destination you would like to stay for a while and get back on the bus again. The bus comes around once an hour. Visit the Grand Mosque and Ferrari World on Yas Island.
As long as you feel well you can do everything you like. Please bring your marriage certificate with you. Just as a precaution in case you have to see a doc (God beware).
From woman to woman; blood pressure during pregnancy sometimes don't know what it;s doing. Therefore stay out of the heat during lunch time and drink enough. Pregnant women also tend to use the bathroom more often. Always carry enough tissues with you because bathrooms in older malls/shopping centres may not offer toiletpaper. Carry your mother pass (if you have one) with you all the time). Don't drink any tab water. Also when it's clean, if not used to it you may will get stomach problems.
Wish the 2,5 of you a nice honeymoon in the UAE.

Christians, should the church of Jesus Christ spend $5BILLION on a shopping mall?
Just wondering what your gut instinct is on this one.
If a church donates $1 BILLION on humanitarian aid over the past 25 years, and over the past 5 years spends $5 BILLION on a shopping mall, who does that church serve: God or Mammon?
Does it matter much if the church in question is using "tithing funds" or the churchs "commercial real estate arm"?
That sort of raises a secondary question: Should a church of Jesus Christ HAVE a "commercial real estate arm"?
Thanks.

@Rac: If all the funds the Church receives are used to help the poor, needy, & suffering, then where did the Church get the funds to start up the commercial real estate arm (and other commercial ventures) in the first place? Certainly it was from funds the Church received. You already know this truth, yet you kick against it. You claim I kick against the truth that the Church gives all its funds to help the poor and needy, yet the facts clearly demonstrate that is NOT the truth. At what point do the facts actually matter to you?
Answer: The role of the church is to preach the gospel of Christ and for the assembly of the children of God, the pastor providing instruction on the Word of God so that Christians may grow in their faith
(1 Peter 2:2).
The church is not responsible for humanitarian aid or any other social programs...only to teach and to baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost (Matthew 28:19-20), AND to observe ALL things which he commanded.
So no, a (the) true church would not even consider building OR even donating funds to build a mall.

Do you think this is hypocritical? CITY CREEK CENTER, an LDS (mormon) owned mall doing these things?
In the City creek center Mall in down down Salt Lake City? THE LDS church owns the mall.
I guess the pressure is on and some restaurants will not least at the mall if liquor licenses will not be allowed. See...http://www.abc4.com/content/news/top_stories/story/Will-LDS-Churchs-City-Creek-Center-be-able-to-get/5j3EHT1nwkSUjVTHOeCp4w.cspx
This LDS owned mall, project is stretching to end in the 4 billion dollar mark.
Heres the LDS statement on restaurants & liquor....
"Will alcohol be available at any location in the project?"
"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has consistently made plain that in matters of public policy it is not opposed to responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages by informed adults."
1. So the LDS church probably will allow the alcohol to be sold, and is this hypocritical?
To allow ALCOHOL in a building they own and are against it for members.
2. I guess the most all Restaurants (not stores for now) will be open on Sundays also.... and is this hypocritical?
(Since the LDS church Leases the spaces and owns the MALL that that restaurants, will be profiting on SUNDAYS, since it is a no no for members to shop or spend money on Sundays.)
3. Do you think the stores will eventually be opened on Sundays like the Mall in OREM, UT did? (but first said they would never open on Sundays.)
Can you answer 1 ,2 and 3? Thank You.
Harp..exactly! Is the LDS church a "church" or a tax paying BUSINESS?? Is that not having your cake and eating it too?
Phrog, the LDS church has never tried to force their views on others huh??
Prop 8 rings a bell!
Phrog, Mormon "money and time" given my members, when asked for by LDS leadership many times, was what SWAYED the Vote...period.
Answer: The LDS support of the mall is baffling at best. Perhaps they think they're helping "zion put on her beautiful garments" but it clearly violates the intent of keeping churches tax exempt.
And support of the mall clearly shows the problem with allowing a church to spend without any public accountability. Not even faithful Mormons know for sure where their church spends their money. And when accountability is at risk, bad behaviors ALWAYS spring up. It doesn't really matter if it's an individual, government, corporation or whoever...if accountability is weak or non-existent, prepare for bad behavior.
And as you point out, the LDS church paints itself into a moral corner with alcohol permits and store hours. Of course they'll try to distance themselves by saying something along the lines of, we're just the investors and the mall is run by others or something anemic like that.
So this issue exposes the LDS church as an organization with no real accountability and has no moral backbone when it comes to choosing between it's own moral standards and business development.
