F.D.A. Orders Warning Label for Botox and Rivals
Botox and other similar antiwrinkle drugs must now carry the most stringent kind of warning label, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday. The F.D.A. issued that order the day after the agency approved a new drug, Dysport, that is expected to be the first real challenger to Botox in the United States. What is the relationship, if any, between DYSTONIA and Epilepsy?
Dystonia is a movement disorder that causes the muscles in the body to expand and contract involuntarily. This movement disorder may, in some cases be confused with seizures. However, can there be a primary causal relationship between the two? If so, what would that be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Answer: Dystonia can be caused by some of the same things as seizures are. Since Epilepsy is a disorder which covers a broad range of problems that cause seizures the two might be casually related this way. The only one thing that stands out positively is that Dystonia can be a genetic disorder. Both can be caused by injury (specifically head trauma), inflammation, and a drug reaction. Since the cause of this is of yet unknown with the exception that it has a genetic connection and can be associated with environmental conditions too. There is allot more info available on wikipedia, and since this sounds more like a homework assignment please do the research that you find necessary. Good luck and God Bless

Has anyone been diagnosed with or know what DYSTONIA is?
Can someone explain to me what the symptoms of Dystonia are and/or feel like? And if their Dystonia came from medication side effects or because of something else?
Answer: Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder in which sustained muscle contractions cause twisting and repetitive movements or abnormal postures. The disorder may be inherited or caused by other factors such as birth-related or other physical trauma, infection, poisoning (e.g. lead poisoning) or reaction to drugs.
Symptoms vary according to the kind of Dystonia involved. In most cases, Dystonia tends to lead to abnormal posturing, particularly on movement. Many sufferers have continuous pain, cramping and relentless muscle spasms due to involuntary muscle movements.
Early symptoms may include loss of precision muscle coordination (sometimes first manifested in declining penmanship, frequent small injuries to the hands, dropped items and a noticeable increase in dropped or chipped dishes), cramping pain with sustained use and trembling. Significant muscle pain and cramping may result from very minor exertions like holding a book and turning pages. It may become difficult to find a comfortable position for arms and legs with even the minor exertions associated with holding arms crossed causing significant pain similar to restless leg syndrome. Affected persons may notice trembling in the diaphragm while breathing, or the need to place hands in pockets, under legs while sitting or under pillows while sleeping to keep them still and to reduce pain. Trembling in the jaw may be felt and heard while lying down, and the constant movement to avoid pain may result in the grinding and wearing down of teeth, or symptoms similar to TMD. The voice may crack frequently or become harsh, triggering frequent throat clearing. Swallowing can become difficult and accompanied by painful cramping.

who can help out a person with a need for brain surgery for the disease DYSTONIA?
i fell off an excercise ball, ending up with spial damage, not being able to swallow and Dystonia. I sold everything i had to get therapy to stay alive but now i found out i need more treatments including genetics, therapy, brain surgery and surgery of tendons and muscles.
Answer: It's always good to do a lot a research before doing surgery, especially brain surgery. Brain surgery is quite an extreme thing to do for Dystonia. Are you seeing a Dystonia specialist or just a general neurologist? There are a number of other treatment options. Don't let your doctors scare you, especially when you're feeling perhaps a bit helpless and down. Take charge of your body and do research on your own. You can always have the surgery - but take a deep breath and do not rush into it. See a Dystonia specialist. Most other doctors don't know enough about Dystonia conditions as such conditions are often rare. A specialist will be at the forefront of what can be done and will not just shove you into surgery.
A good place to contact is Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. They are at the forefront of Dystonia research. Check out the website : http://www.nyp.org/health/Dystonia.html
Also read up on research at:
http://www.Dystonia-foundation.org/
Don't give up. It will get better. Believe in your own strength. Take control of the situation. Do NOT let it control you!
Also: You mention something about genetics. There is no such thing as genetic treatment for Dystonia. It does not exist. There is no chromosome or chromosomal marker that can be identified as a Dystonia carrier. You definitely need to see a Dystonia expert. Otherwise you'll end up as a guinea pig. Dystonia can be alleviated and managed. Botulinum toxin (BOTOX) works great for many, many forms of Dystonia. It could work for you too. Brain surgery should be and IS the LAST and FINAL resort. When ALL other options are COMPLETELY exhausted only. It's a high risk operation. Now you've got me worried. Please do not rush into anything, ok?
And lastly: this is not a disease. It is a condition. There is a difference. You're not sick.

do you know about DYSTONIA? What is the best procedure to cure it?
Its involuntary movements of the muscles.
Answer: Drugs, such as anticholinergics which act as an inhibitor of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, may provide some relief. Clonazepam, an anti-seizure medicine, is also sometimes prescribed. However, for most sufferers their effects are limited. Botulinum toxin injections into affected muscles have proved quite successful in providing some relief for around 3-6 months, depending on the kind of Dystonia. The injections have to be repeated and around 15% of recipients develop immunity to the toxin. There is a Type A and Type B toxin approved for treatment of Dystonia; often those that develop resistance to Type A may be able to use Type B.
Surgery, such as the denervation of selected muscles, may also provide some relief. Recently, the procedure of deep brain stimulation has proved successful in a number of cases of severe generalised Dystonia.

What is the probability of other children inheirting DYSTONIA?
Answer: If Dystonia is a genetic disorder there is different probabilities of getting the disease based on the parents genetics.
1. If both parents are carriers, the child has a 25% chance of having the disorder, and a 50% chance of being a carrier. There is also a 25% chance that they will have 2 dominant genes and will not pass it on or have the disorder
2. If one parent is a carrier and the other is not, then there is no chance that the child will have the disorder.
3. If one parent has 2 dominant non-disorder genes and one has the disorder, the child will not have the disorder but will definitely be a carrier (100% of the time).
There are different situations. Can you please elaborate on your question.

What Do You Know About DYSTONIA: Its a Survey, Not Advice?
Describe Dystonia, what you know about it, what you wonder about it, and any personal experiences with it.
Im trying to find out what people do and dont know about it, for awareness.
Answer: It's a neurological movement disorder where people get involuntary muscle contractions which force certain parts of the body into abnormal, sometimes painful, movements or postures. Dystonia can affect any part of the body including the arms and legs, trunk, neck, eyelids, face, or vocal cords and can affect anyone at any age. It is the third most common movement disorder after Parkinson’s disease and Tremor. Although there is presently no cure for Dystonia, multiple treatment options are available. No single strategy will be appropriate for every case.

Desiree Jennings so called incurable disease "DYSTONIA" that was caused by a flu shot?
I was wondering if anyone else thinks that the Desiree Jennings Dystonia case from taking the flu shot was a hoax or not. There is news out that she has been cured and there is now videos of her on youtube talking normally. I though Dystonia was a incurable disease at least thats what the news made it sound like. Im starting to think that she did this for publicity but i could be wrong.
Answer: A number of neurologists found that her symptoms did not match the pattern for Dystonia. The pattern seemed more like a psychogenic disorder. Psychogenic does not mean hoax. A psychogenic disorder is real to the patient. Her case was picked up by groups that wanted to exploit the situation.

Would a nerve block help to destroy the nerves that cause Cervical DYSTONIA?
And if this would work then why can they, the Doctors then, once the offending muscles have been identified from the nerve block then is it possible for them to cure cervical Dystonia or other movement disorders with a permanent nerve block, such as LUNA? I used cervical Dystonia as an example so that you could study what I am talking about before you tell me what you think. I want to say thank you for your answers and have a blessed day.
Answer: I'm not sure that anyone woud wish to destroy nerves, per se, for cervical Dystonia when there are options like botox that are effective in the treatment of such conditions.
Contact a specialist, e.g a neurologist, dermatologist, physiatrist for consult to see if you're a candidate for such treatment.
I wish you well.

Have you had success with DYSTONIA treatment?
Doctors are beginning to treat me for Idiopathic Dystonia and I wanted to know how many people on here have had success with the current treatments available? Not talking about DPS. Any success stories would be appreciated, spiritual, natural, and/or pharmaceutical.
Answer: I have a focal Dystonia of writers cramp with essential tremors. I've lost most fine control of my hands. The only thing that makes a big difference is Botox. I don't write at all but can still type. I take two meds for tremors. My doctor keeps mentioning brain surgery (I don't think so). The Botox weakens the back of my arm so I don't get locked in spasm.
This big thing is that you learn to adapt. It does not bother me anymore that I have hand problems. I'm a college professor and I have found ways of doing everything without a real problem. I correct papers using a tape recorder. I type all of my notes. I am given a classroom near my office so I don't drop things as much. I can't say it really bothers me. I wear a belt pack because I can't get keys out of my pocket. I have my secretary, or my wife, or my kids write for me. I have found ways of getting around everything. That is the secret. You accept it and find ways of moving on. You have problems but you don't let the problems bother you. You are still you and you have not changed.
