What are the chances there might me an Earthquake in the Bay Area tomorrow?
Answer: In terms of a very large Earthquake of between 8.0 and 9.0 on the Richter Scale, the chance is the same as it was a month ago, 2 weeks ago, a week from now , a month from now or a year from now. The chances are very small and there is absolutely NOTHING special about tomorrow or any time soon. The release of stresses by smaller Earthquakes and even larger Earthquakes is actually a good thing in terms of lowering the probability of Earthquakes in any given area. There is absolutely nothing strange going on. The only thing strange going on is that people who otherwise know nothing about Geology, can now see it magnified and hyped on TV. Every idiot who will say something sensational for CNN and FOX will get his 15 minutes of Fame.

How much of a worry are earthquakes in the Bay Area of California?
I am considering moving to the Bay Area of California, and I know they region is criscrossed with earthquake faults. But, how much of a risk is it REALLY? Is there risk of ending up homeless after massive damage? How much do residents worry about quakes on a regular basis?
Answer: There's not much worry. Threat of a quake doesn't consume the lives of the people that live there. You'll learn things like not to put breakable or heavy things up on shelves. Most of the structures are built to withstand pretty good size quakes and most have been through some pretty good size quakes. It's really not that big of a deal and big ones are so far and few that it really isn't worth the worry, just the vigilance.

Japan Revives a Sea Barrier That Failed to Hold
KAMAISHI, Japan -- After three decades and nearly $1.6 billion, work on Kamaishis great tsunami breakwater was completed three years ago. A mile long, 207 feet deep and jutting nearly 20 feet above the water, the quake-resistant structure made it into the Guinness World Records last year and rekindled fading hopes of revival in this rusting former - Japanese authorities plans to rebuild the breakwater in Kamaishi suggest that the kind of cozy ties between government and industry that contributed to the Fukushima nuclear disaster are driving much of the reconstruction efforts in areas devastated by the earthquake and tsunami; critics say that the insistence on rebuilding breakwaters and sea walls that did little to mitigate the effects of the tsunami reflects a recovery plan out of step with the times and a waste of money. Will there be a earthquake that will hit bay area, California soon?
since there are so many earthquakes that happened recently
if so? is California going to sink into Nevada?
how to survive the earthquake?
and how big will the earthquake be?
will there be tsunamis too?
Answer: No one on the planet, no one man or woman, no organization or government entity is anywhere close to predicting earthquakes. We barely even have good details about how they actually happen when they do go off.
California cannot sink into Nevada (that's a new one) or fall into the Pacific Ocean, unless some horrible tectonic calamity happened in which the crust itself suddenly sank by many kilometers for no apparent reason. Since California is primarily a transform boundary, that won't happen on even a tiny scale.
There won't be a tsunami, just possibly so larger than normal but otherwise standard waves. There will be no uplift, and I'm no aware of any place that has the potential for a large landslide along the California coast, and I've lived, studied, and worked here all my life.
No one knows how big any earthquake at any time will be.
Only a very few earthquakes cause damaging tsunamis, or even noticeable tsunamis. They have to occur with very specific conditions, not just "earthquake makes a tsunami."
It's not going to happen to California.

We had a 4.0 earthquake in the Bay Area at about 5:33 this morning. It was centered in El Cerrito, but we're getting many reports of shaking in Claycord. Did you feel it? Tweet.
What should I do/how should I prepare for the big california bay area earthquake?
I just learned some stuff about this earthquake in my science class, and Im wondering what I should do if that happens. Like, where I should go if Im in my house or if Im in the car, or outside... etc. And also, how should I prepare for it and what should I do after the earthquake?
(keep in mind that Im 14 years old; its therefore kinda difficult for me to make sure my house is structurally supported and that I have enough emergency supply water... or whatever).
thanks!
Answer: Talk to your parents about preparing an earthquake kit. If you are not sure what should go into one, there are plenty of websites that have lists of good things to have.
Talk to your parents about making sure your water heater is bolted to the wall.
During the earthquake, if you are in your house, do your best to get under a desk, or away from objects that could potentially fall down.
You should be fine if you do all of this!

Some people in the San Francisco Bay area were awakened by an earthquake, though there have been no damage reports. A U.S. Geological Survey.
Do you think an earthquake can happen in the Bay Area anytime soon?
First there was an earthquake 5 somethin in San Jose
then 3.1 magnitutde in pacifica and my bro says theres going to be a big one because its been over 100 years since the incident in 1920s or something. What do you guys think?
Answer: Um, the 1920s were, like, 80 years ago, not 100. But it has been over one hundred years since the 1907 San Francisco earthquake.
Anyway, to answer your question. Do I think an earthquake can happen in the Bay Area anytime soon? Sure. Do I think it WILL happen soon? There's no way to know.
Yes, it CAN happen soon (but then, what is soon? Next month? Next year? During your lifetime? Human time scale or geologic time scale?), because there has been enough time for stress to build up along the fault to release a lot of energy when it does finally snap. But we don't know enough about earthquakes to be able to predict them any better than to be able to say where they are likely to occur, but not exactly when.

If a earthquake hits the bay area will it cause a tsunami?
Also if we were to have a tsunami how much affect will it have on Fairfield Ca? Will we get flooded or will the city get destroyed?
Answer: If a 9.0 thrust plate earthquake were to occur on an Ocean side fault line a tsunami might be created. But Fairfield is far in land in Solano Coutny the inland side of the Coastal Range. It would be very, very unlikely any wave action could get to your neighborhood.

What would happen if a 9.0 earthquake hit the bay area?
I live in the bay area and am very worried about the earthquake that is supposed to hit here. Will all the houses fall down and are we going to see a lot of deaths from it? Or will it just cause destruction on roads and stuff
Answer: Buildings will fall apart, houses will become rubble and the services will be totalled. Part of the city will fall into the ocean and a new water front will develop. No roads, bridges electricity or gas. Loads of fires and no one available to provide help as they can't get to those stuck in buildings. Fuel and food will be in short supply as this size of quake will affect a large area so if you can walk out it will be a long walk. Hospitals and other essential services will all be in trouble and not able to respond properly. Number of deaths will depend on time of day and any warning (smaller quakes before the biggie) that might cause some to leave the area.

Do they predict a BIG earthquake soon in the bay area?
I know the past couple of days hayward and the east bay have been hit are they predicting a big earthquake is comming soon?
Answer: The recent earthquakes were all on the Hayword fault, the least dangerous fault in the bay. It is a creeping fault that does not lock, so it has many, frequent, smaller earthquakes.
This is what Dr. Jackson of UCLA told me, a leading geophysists:
Earthquakes follow NO predictable pattern. People have tried and tried, with no luck. They may have accidentally predicted one, but they can not predict anything consistantly.
Earthquakes fall into 3 categories. Some do behave well, they have foreshocks, they show subtle signs, and have aftershocks very nicely. They are still not predictable, but they are closer to being predicted. Some have no warning at all and never show any signs of going. The third group follow no pattern at all, they go seemingly randomly, and they can not even be estimated. It is very hard to tell which fault will be in which group, and this is why prediction is still several breakthroughs away.
