WESTCHESTER DINING | PORT CHESTER; Cocktails for Locavores Or for Lovers of Honey
LOCAL lore suggests the cocktail was invented in Elmsford around the time of the Revolutionary War, when a barmaid would garnish drinks with the tail feathers of roosters from Loyalist chicken coops. And its a fact that Purchase has long been the United States base of the French spirits giant Pernod Ricard (Absolut, Beefeater, Kahlúa) and that - Valerie Peterson is a journalist and cookbook author, most recently of Petersons Happy Hour: Spirited Cocktails and Helpful Hints to Brighten Daily Life. - By VALERIE PETERSON
In Marine Corp boot camp do they actually use live rounds during training like in the movie JARHEAD?
There is a scene in the movie Jarhead where marines are crawling under barbedwire during training, and one guy stands up and gets shot. If that is actually true, why would they use live rounds and risk a life?
Answer: The answer from my experience several years ago (in SOI not boot camp) is that yes they do, but the reality is that they were probably firing so far over our heads that you could have jumped in the air and nothing would have happened.
Training in the USMC is dangerous. There's no two ways about it. It's a dangerous job and people get hurt. We had a guy fall off a rappel tower at amphibious warfare school, and a guy almost get killed on a demo range too. It doesn't mean you just stop training. It just means you need to learn how to do it right so you don't freak out when you are doing it for real.
To me it's more dangerous to send a kid into combat who freaks out when the rounds come downrange than to shoot some over people's heads in training. At least then, the guy isn't going to get anyone else killed when they are counting on them.
(Mike: We had a guy break out his two front teeth because he tried to dive through a window on an urban assault course with his rifle sideways. BLAM! OW! That had to hurt! At least the USMC decided to give him dentures.)

For Veterans Back From War, Writing Proves to Be a Balm
The explosion directly in front of me made no sound. A cloud of smoke darker and thicker and bigger than I had ever seen bloomed like the life span of a giant oak tree condensed into a few milliseconds. Then, the earth shook and a sonic blast knocked me back a few steps. I stared at the cloud of smoke, mesmerized. From Go Now, You Are Forgiven, - By WENDY CARLSON

what are some good army movies like brothers and JARHEAD?
im looking for it to be modern,
similar to brothers, Jarhead, and the messenger is ideal.
-thanks.
Answer: If you have the time, then I'd suggest you watch the HBO miniseries, Generation Kill. That's what war for a bunch of recon Marines is really like. The miniseries is apolitical, allowing you to focus on the lives of the Marines and how they cope with each other, the fighting and stress. It takes place during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. I'd also suggest you read the book.
Jarhead is a perversion of the life of a Marine, told through eloquent and articulate lies. If you've read the book, you'll see that the author virtually blames his life's misdeeds and failures on the Marine Corps. He words his writings well, but he ultimately betrays the Corps.
The Hurt Locker gives you a very primitive insight into what the life of an Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal technician is like. The story has been severely adulterated and facts have been twisted, so as to make the movie more interesting. For example, the Army doesn't send a lone Humvee with 3 EOD techies out to defuse a VBIED. It takes place during the occupation of Iraq.
I'd suggest you watch the movie Taking Chance as well. It's something along the lines of The Messenger, except this is a true story and it is definitely heartbreaking. If you don't feel like crying throughout the movie, then you're a heartless, cold person. The movie takes place in 2004.
The Green Zone is, from it's premise, a very politically-driven film. It depicts far-left views and there are absolutely no facts that back any of the film's base. For instance, it claims the war in Iraq was based on oil, where in fact, the United States does not get a drop of oil from Iraq. That oil is controlled almost exclusively by the Russians and Chinese and, to some extent, the French.

In JARHEAD and Generation Kill, why do soldiers cover their scopes so there is only a small opening?
Is this to prevent too much light from entering the scope or cut down on glare?
Answer: It is to keep the glare to a minimum (or eliminate) as to not accidentally give their position away. Also, it is nice to use during the daylight because it acts as an aperture control (for the covers with a small hole) for the lense, since you don't want all the light during the day to come in (such as on a camera lense) and to help protect all of their optics from exposure damage over time to sunlight, especially UV light.
Great shows by the way. If I remember seeing scope covers in Band of Brothers, I assume they would have been complete coverings and the small holes were only seen on the rifle scopes in Generation Kill. Difference obviously in technolgoy with 60 years between the wars.

How good was the movie JARHEAD?
I dont know if I should see it or not, and if I would like it. Im in to movies about war, with conflicts and battles. I like some comedy in them, but mostly action. Is this a good movie for me?
Answer: its not an action film, its set during the first gulf war, and highlights life in the marines, and their struggle to grasp what is going on, there aren't any battles in it like black hawk down or saving private ryan, but I think its an excellent film, has some funny moments,
its one of those films where you follow the life of a person, or in this case 'swoff' and his platoon, but it really illustrates the pointlessness of the troops being in the iraqi desert and clearly makes the point that it was about the oil...unusual for an american film,
but as i say, if you enjoy action films over psychological ones then its probably not for you...

What are the blazing fires in the background of the movie "JARHEAD"?
when they go to the deserts in the middle east there are fires shooting out of the desert. What are those and how is it coming out of the ground?
Answer: THE WAR IN Iraq commenced on March 20, 2003. In keeping with his past actions in Kuwait during the Gulf War in 1991, Saddam Hussein sabotaged a number of the Iraqi oil wells in the south Rumalia oil fields. Boots & Coots was contacted to assist the military in controlling these wells at an unprecedented point in time, while the war was in full swing. Subsequently, Boots & Coots (B&C) aided in extinguishing four wells, which were on fire, and in safely controlling an additional five wells in the first 45 days of the Iraqi war.

How did marines get the nickname JARHEAD?
I heard it was becuse the mason company made helmets for the marines as well as the shape of the fatige caps. any ideas?
gom- troooooLLLLLLLL said like a south american sprots caster yelling goal
Answer: Well, they got this big, wide mouthed jar that if they can fit their head into the jar and get it out again, they get to join the Marines. That is why they are called "Jarheads"
Back in World War 2, my uncle Oscar got his head stuck in the jar, but the sargent pulled it off. Uncle Oscar was so pissed, because he had to be a marine. Uncle Oscar thought that if he couldn't get it off, no one was supposed to help him get it off. He did NOT want to be a marine. But he was one bad ass marine. No one messed with Oscar. He was always pissed about something.
You know how some people are just mad at the world for something and every little thing pisses them off? That was my uncle Oscar.
I didn't mess with my Uncle Oscar cause he was mean, very mean. He beat up a biker gang when he was 55 cause the biker gang was going to beat up his son who was 22 at the time. I was a riot. Those 8 bikers were running away, scared like all get out.
