What is the situation with travel in MAURITANIA?
Saw a documentary on the country, it looks interesting and Im looking for word of mouth from someone who has traveled there.
Answer: Unfortunately the situation at the moment is not good. Ever since the 2008 coups things have been going downhill.
There have been several abduction and murders of westerners there recently, and even the famous Rally Paris-Dakar now takes place in South America because Mauritania is too unsafe.

Answer: Mauritania is already largely desert, and global warming will just make the problem worse, destroying what little cropland there is in the south of the country and drying up fresh water. Sand dunes will likely threaten more settlements as the Sahara spreads southward. People who rely on vegetation for food and fuel will have even less. And if their neighbors have an even worse time than the Mauritanians, they could have refugees crossing their borders or rebels and bandits using their territory. Developing new water resources will require desalination plants to exploit sea water, but they probably don't have the economic resources for this. I wouldn't be optimistic about their future.

What kind of animals are in MAURITANIA, Africa?
Ok... so our end of the year Social Studies/Science project is for the rest of the year and 80% of our grade.
My social studies teacher told me that there are the most amazing animals in Mauritania in the world.
As for me Ive never heard of the place, and cant find any unnormal animals.
Answer: Lions, panthers, jackals, crocodiles, hippopotami, hyenas, cheetahs, otters, and monkeys survive in the south; in the north there are antelopes, wild sheep, ostriches and other large birds, and ducks.

Why is MAURITANIA so rarely visited yet its only across the sea from the canary islands which is very popular?
you hear so many people that have been to the canary islands and enjoyed it so much, and on the news you hear that the canaries has been very popular for centuries because of clubs and beaches etc, on the other hand, Mauritania (and Western Sahara) which also has lovely beaches, so isolated that some of the vast majority of holiday makers have not even heard of it yet its only just across the water, Why is this? Wouldnt they have like day trips to nearby places like Mauritania?
Answer: Mauritania, I'm afraid to say, is a third world dump with limited tourist facilities. Medical facilities in Mauritania are limited, and medicines are difficult to obtain.
Political stability is a problem with terrorist groups operating.. American citizens are urged to avoid travel in areas along Mauritania's border with Algeria, and its northern border with Mali.
There are banditsand landmines along the border with the Western Sahara.
During periods of political unrest, demonstrators have been known to throw rocks at passing cars. Sounds a nice place!

Do any buses go through the western Sahara and MAURITANIA?
I shall start my trip through Africa in Morocco and hope to head south. Can anyone tell me if i can catch a bus to take me from Morocco through the Sahara and Mauritania?
If not what is the best way to do this. I want to spend as little money as possible. Is it at all possible to walk the Sahara :S.....should I rent a car? Is a plane the best option (I wouldnt like a plane as i want to see as much of Africa as i can. Are these countries safe?

Mauritania to Senegal. Stay in a cheap hostel in Nouactchott and ask about, not too obviously and not to locals. that is an awfull crossing so full of con artists and so busy nobody notices. And I travelled off season. Customs here may take u into a dimly lit room to search your bag. they are The politest people on the planet. But the dim light and good manners hide their theivery. If you go to St. Louis stay at the YHA. No age limit. No membership required, good price and clean. Also freindly helpfull staff, if u speak French.
