What happened to Northern Arizona Universitys NCAA HOCKEY team?
I know in the 80s NAU had a NCAA Div. 1 hockey team, but what happened to it? Why did it leave? And why are there so few Ncaa hockey teams out west (CA, AZ, WA, OR etc)? If anyone who went there could answer this it would be great. thanks.
Answer: From what I understand those states never had Ncaa hockey but they do have ACHA hockey.
Last I checked NAU hockey is still around and so are hockey clubs for ASU and University of Arizona.

What was the name of the NCAA HOCKEY player who broke his neck and then wrote a book?
He broke it in the first game he played with them. I thing he played for a Michigan team, but I could be wrong on that. He is still paralyzed to this day, and he was featured on hockey central earlier on this seasoon.
Answer: His name is Travis Roy, and he played for Boston University.
On October 20, 1995 – just eleven seconds into his first-ever shift for Boston University men's ice hockey team – a 20-year-old Roy slid head-first into the boards after a University of North Dakota player, Mitch Vig, avoided his check, cracking his fourth and fifth vertebra and leaving him a quadriplegic.
Roy and Sports Illustrated writer E.M. Swift wrote his autobiography, Eleven Seconds. He set up a foundation to campaign for spinal cord injury research.

why is it in NCAA HOCKEY you can get drafted and still play?
i love Ncaa hockey i just dont know all the rules about going pro and stuff. i saw this year that justin abdicator from michigan state is still on the team even though he got drafted last season. is Ncaa hockey diff then football and basketball when it comes to getting drafted ?
Answer: As long as a player does not have an agent, and does not sign a contract, and does not attend camp, he is still eligible to play Ncaa hockey whether he has been drafted or not.
The following items declare a player ineligible for the NCAA.
- being academically ineligible to attend classes
- having an agent (instituted in May 15, 1951)
- having signed a pro contract, not just the NHL (instituted May 15, 1951)
- having played in the Canadian Hockey League aka Tier 1 Junior A (instituted September 1, 1981)
- having attended a professional camp (instituted September 1, 1981)
Baseball is the same, players can be drafted out of high school, but as long as they don't have an agent, sign a contract, don't attend camp, they retain their NCAA baseball eligibility.
NCAA Basketball and NCAA Football have different rules because the NBA and NFL don't typically draft 18 yr olds as a rule.
It hasn't always been this way. The Toronto Blue Jays had Danny Ainge as an infielder in the late 70s during the summer while he played basketball for Brigham Young in the winters.

Can someone give me a Hockey 101 on the NCAA?
I watch the NHL a lot but want to know a little more about Ncaa hockey, just the basics for now.
What are the best programs?
Whats different about the style of play compared to the NHL? Different about the rules?
Best coaches?
Anything you can tell me about it would help.
Answer: I hope I can help you out with some of this
The Big Ten hockey teams are very good to watch and have been producing NHL caliber players for many years. Michigan State, Michigan and Ohio State Minnesota and Wisconsin all have very good programs. Keep an eye on the Big Ten Network. They will sprinkle in a few games when they are not showing college football or womens softball.
Also, traditionally, Boston College and Boston University has had players produced for the pros.
The University of North Dakota, Notre Dame, and Denver also have great programs.
And I would also be amiss if I didn't mention my Penn State University mens and womens hockey teams. The Mens have won many national championships in the past 10 years in the ACHA. They are always near the top every year coming in 2nd if they don't win the championship.
Ncaa hockey also has an equivalent to the Heisman Trophy. The Hobey Baker trophy was named after a WWII hero and Princeton University player to signify that years best or outstanding player.
College hockey also has their form of championship tournament called "The Frozen Four" for both Mens and Womens teams. This year the mens teams will play on Ford Field in Detroit and Minnesota (twin cities) will host the women in 2010.
One of the significant differences between college and the NHL is the fact that face shields and cages are mandatory. I think this prevents fans from recognizing their favorite players, but since the college level is a developmental situation for players at all stages, there can be more potential for accidents up around the face and thus needs more protection.

Image Rights vs. Free Speech in Video Game Suit
When Sam Keller, a former quarterback at Arizona State, sued the video game publisher Electronic Arts last year, he was seeking compensation for himself and other college athletes whose names were not used but whose images he contended were being illegally used by the company. But to the media conglomerates, athletes, actors, First Amendment - Outcome of appeal filed by Electronic Arts over lawsuit brought by Sam Keller, former quarterback at Arizona State, could rewrite rules that dictate how much ownership public figures have over their images, and extent to which outside parties, including media and entertainment companies, can profit from them; Keller filed class action suit in 2009 against Electronic Arts, National Collegiate Athletic Association and Collegiate Licensing Company, claiming they illegally profited from using images of college players portrayed in games; case is drawing attention because it gets to heart of highly contested legal question--when should persons right to control his image trump free speech rights of others to use it; it is also area about which Supreme Court has remained largely silent, but for one case that First Amendment lawyers say has been difficult to apply because it did not establish clear line between right of publicity and First Amendment, leaving courts to make their own rules about how such cases should be evaulated; photos (M) - By KATIE THOMAS

How good do you have to be to play NCAA Divison 1 hockey?
I play hockey in Canada, so do I have to play AAA until my last year of high school, and then I go to NCAA? Or can I play in Jr.A for my grade 12 year to make the adjustment easier? Ive heard if you play in the OHL, then you cant play NCAA. Is this true?
Answer: Unless you are highly recruited out of your high school years, then you will have to play Jr A in order to have a shot at any of the NCAA (D1 or D3). So you could potentially end up playing 2-3 years of junior after high school to have a shot.
It is true you can't play in the OHL or QMJHL because it is considered professional by the NCAA. However, you could still play in the CIS.
And how hard is it? Very very very hard. Being a true freshman in NCAA D1 is rare. Even playing after a couple years of junior is extremely hard. Some people just don't had the skill to play at that level.

Why do NCAA HOCKEY programs have to follow Article 9, while ACHA Hockey programs dont?
Schools like UNLV, BYU, Colorado are Top Tier NCAA schools, receive Federal funding (per the guidelines of Article 9), yet offer no scholarships in Hockey, Lacrosse, or others and as such cant compete with BC or Harvard or Michigan for the NCAA title, but have their own Conference - the ACHA - that is somehow exempt from Article 9.
Answer: Schools with ACHA teams are not exempt from Title IX. An individual team does not follow Title IX, the school must meet the requirement based on all of the opportunities it provides. Title IX is not an NCAA rule, it is a federal law and applies to high school as well as college level sports. A school with a Varsity or ACHA team is not required to have a women's hockey team in order to meet the Title IX requirements, they are only required to have a proportionate number of athletic opportunities available for women. I have enclosed a link to the most recent worksheet used to determine Title IX compliance. You would need far more information about any individual school in order to determine whether a school is compliant than whether they have a club level hockey program. Another catch to that is that ACHA permits women to play along side of the boys which throws an extra wrinkle into the equation.
The ACHA is a club, not a varsity sport. This places them in the category of the chess club or the french club, any activity that the school offers that they do not offer scholarships for. They may or may not be effected by Title IX, there are a few deciding factors but the key one is the school's involvement with the team.
Some examples: Penn State, Delaware and Rhode Island. All are very well funded by the school if not entirely. These schools have their Title IX numbers directly effected by their teams because the school funds the team, they practice/play on school owned facilities and all have coaching and other team staff provided by the school.
These schools take a larger hit than a school like LaSalle University's hockey program. LaSalle is not recognized by the school and is entirely run and funded by the students playing. They have no access to the school's facilities for team activities. Schools that fall into that category will have little if any effect the school's Title IX numbers.
