How do you get to the GRAND CANYON SKYWALK?
We are going to the Grand Canyon next week. How do I get to the Skywalk? I need directions from Las Vegas. Thanks!
Answer: I assume that you will be driving ,If so then you will have both a problem and a great adventure.
The problem;
Contrary to all the advertising and news copy that you are reading The Skywalk [ If you walk on it will that make you a Skywalker ? ] is not located in what most knowledgeable people including me , consider to be Grand Canyon. The term West Rim of The Grand Canyon is in fact a marketing name intended to get people visiting Las Vegas to do exactly what you are about to do. On a map no such place .
exists.
To give you an idea of how far it is from Grand Canyon Village which is where I will sending you, you need to know that the length of the Colorado River through the Canyon is 277 river miles,
Mile 0 is at a place called Lee's Ferry which is located a several miles south of Glen Canyon Dam
Mile 277 is located at a place called Grand Wash cliffs which is where the River empties into what is now Lake Mead but the Grand Wash Cliffs themselves also represent the limit of the huge Colorado Plateau.
Between those two points lies the Grand Canyon.
Grand Canyon Village is in Grand Canyon National Park and it is where the hotels restaurants ,and visitor center are.
From a river mile perspective, the Village is about mile 94.
The Skywalk is about river mile 265-270 ?
and most of the classic and awesome Grand Canyon geology is not present on that part of the river.
When GCNP was created one of the reasons that the National Park Service and later the Santa Fe RR located the Park and the village where they are because it's the most scenic part of the Canyon.
I know that if you go to Skywalk and you look at a map , the map will tell you that GCNP is just across the river . Technically that's true ,but historically it's not. During the Clinton administration the Park boundary's were expanded to protect more of the area adjacent to the Canyon.
So much for the history lesson let's get you there
Las Vegas to Grand Canyon National Park is going to take you a realistic 5 hours. Leave early
US 93 over Hoover Dam to Kingman AZ
90 miles.
If you left early you will also beat the traffic on the dam which will save you time.
There is a full stop security check point before you reach the dam in both directions. If you have the remnants of a long night in Vegas in your car , you may want to remove them before starting on your journey.
Get gas in Kingman
I-40 E to SR 64 at Williams AZ
120 miles and less than 2 hours
North on 64 and into the Park-60 miles
Personally my favorite view is from Lipan Point on East Rim Drive because all the geology is present and you can see the river for miles .
If you go out to Lipan exit the Park at Desert View and then do that spectacular downhill run w/ the literally 100 mile views into Cameron AZ
When you reach the "T" make a right on US 89 south follow it into Flagstaff

Has anyone been on the GRAND CANYON SKYWALK? If so, please answer a few of my questions?
1) Do you believe that the Skywalk gives a good portrait of Grand Canyon? Is it worth it?
2) Do you have to pay to go on the Skywalk?
3) Are there any restrictions for this Skywalk? I have a 13-year old child whos coming along with me.
4) Is it closed in any time of the year?
Thanks so much! Please give me a detailed answer & Ill pick the best answer ASAP! =)
Answer: 1) No, it gives you a sense of height (which is pretty cool), however due to price it is not worth it, other than that the view is comparable to other locations.
2) Yeah $75 per person
3) Kids are not an issue
4) As far as I know it is open year round
Over all personally cost out weigh gains. It is a long drive there (it is out of the way from the visited portion of Grand Canyon, it was put there to attract people from Vegas, being so it is significantly faster to reach from the Las Vegas than it is to reach from Grand Canyon National Park.)
Oh right no pictures when you are on it (at least as of a couple years ago.
The road from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon (the tourist area of the Grand Canyon), is a really rough dirt road, they planed on updating it but not sure it has been done.
Advertising is tricky, it may say $25 however there is a $50 reservation fee tacked on to that for the total of $75

National Briefing | Southwest: Arizona: Indian Tribe Building Skywalk
An Indian tribe with land along the Grand Canyon is planning to build a glass-bottomed walkway that will jut out 70 feet from the canyons edge. The horseshoe-shaped skywalk, expected to open in January, is part of the Hualapai Tribes $40 million effort to turn 1,000 acres of reservation land into a tourist destination.

How much money does it cost to walk on the GRAND CANYON SKYWALK not with a tour?
Answer: A little under $75 per person. $43 and change for the "Legacy Package" (the entrance fee to "Grand Canyon West" which is required to get to the skywalk area) and just under $30 to walk on the actual skywalk.

How much does it cost to walk at the GRAND CANYON SKYWALK ?
I dont want a tour or anything--- driving there from vegas- and want to walk out there ... also, what other costs are associated with it? is it in a park area? have to pay to get into there? etc.....
and, yes, i am afraid of heights!!!
Answer: When everything is said and done, it costs a minimum of $75 per person to go on the SkyWalk. I was actually there about a month ago and here is the whole scoop...
The SkyWalk is NOT in the famous Grand Canyon National Park. The SkyWalk is located on the Hualapai Indian Reservation just before the canyon empties into Lake Mead while Grand Canyon National Park is located a hundred miles upstream (it is about 4-5 hour drive from one to the other). This area is referred to as 'Grand Canyon West' and has been developed by the tribe as a way to generate money. While the Grand Canyon West area is still technically part of the Grand Canyon, it is not as big or deep as the famous section in the park to the east.
As for the SkyWalk itself... you are not allowed to just drive or walk up to it on your own. All visitors to Grand Canyon West must stop and park at the little airport where you can buy packages that allow you to visit different areas. The SkyWalk is at Eagle Point and so you must buy a package that includes the shuttle bus from the airport visitor center to Eagle Point (minimum of $50 per person). Even once you take the shuttle to Eagle Point, you do not automatically get to go on the SkyWalk - that is another ticket ($25 per person) that you can either buy at the SkyWalk or at the visitor's center. There is a slight discount for Arizona residents. The rest of the minimum package includes visiting Guano Point (another nearby overlook) and a buffet-style meal.
As for the experience of being on the SkyWalk - I should warn visitors that it is NOT what is portrayed on the artist renditions on the website and promotions. First off, the SkyWalk is NOT over the Colorado River in the main gorge of the canyon - it is located on the rim of a small side canyon with the main gorge and river about a half mile away. Also, it is NOT a 4000 foot straight drop to the bottom of even the side canyon. Like most places in the canyon, the walls have slopes and ridges - it is probably less than a 1000 feet below the SkyWalk to a series of ledges and rubble.
Also the bottom of the SkyWalk is not completely see-through. There are two big U-shaped metal supports that hold it up and block about a third of the view through the floor. You are basically looking through the gap between the 2 support beams, which makes it feel more like looking through a trap door rather than flying or walking on air. When you look down, you basically just see a pile of unmoving rocks and rubble at the base of the cliff. While it is a bit unnerving just to be walking on a glass platform, I found the view through the floor (and the overall experience) to be a bit anti-climatic.
The view looking out over the edge at the wider canyon is very pretty and scenic, but not really any different than just standing on the rim of the canyon itself 50 feet away. You are not allowed to take cameras (or cell phones) onto the SkyWalk. Some people may find it worth the money, but the day that I visited many people were very upset (largely because of the misleading information).
Unlike at the National Park, you can't just go walk and hike around anywhere you please at Grand Canyon West. You have to stay in the two little areas on the package (Eagle and Guano Points) and must travel between them on the shuttle. There is really not much else to do there (other than the fake western town and petty zoo that has about 3 farm animals).
As for crowds... I was there the second weekend after it opened, and while there were plenty of people there, it was far from crowded. I never saw more than about 2 dozen people on the SkyWalk at the same time. However, even this small number was too many for the shuttle bus service which only came around about once every 20 minutes, by which time more people were in line to go back than the bus could hold. The end result, is that you end up spending 20-40 minutes in line (no seats or sun shades) waiting for a bus to get between the visitor center and the two points on the package tour. Hopefully this will improve.
Others may have different views, but I personally found the whole experience to be overpriced, over-hyped and kinda cheesy. I much prefer the National Park area. The SkyWalk and Grand Canyon West area was developed to raise money for the Hualapai Indian Reservations which suffers from poverty and can't complete with a casino because they are so close to Vegas. I don't blame them for trying to improve their situation by leveraging the amazing landscapes on their land and I hope they find a good balance to do so in the future. But the Las Vegas promoters who designed and financed the SkyWalk have turned it into something of a tourist trap designed to suck in tourist dollars. Visitor Beware.

How much cost the fee of GRAND CANYON SKYWALK ?
I dont want a grand canyon skywalk package or tour .I want only to walk there. Thanks
Answer: I have actually been there and can tell you definitely that it will cost a minimum of $75 per person to go on the Sky Walk (slight discount for Arizona residents).
It costs $25 to walk on the SkyWalk itself, but you can NOT access the SkyWalk without signing up for one of the 'packages' and the cheapest one (that includes access to the SkyWalk area) is $50. Thus $50 + $25 = $75 per person.
The rest of the package covers the shuttle bus between the main parking lot at the Grand Canyon West airport and the two main overlooks Guano Point and Eagle Point (Eagle Point is where the SkyWalk is). You are NOT allowed to just drive directly to the SkyWalk on your own - you have to take the little shuttle (ie: the package). The package also covers a buffet style meal at either Guano point or the little fake frontier town ranch.
As a person that has been there, I should also warn you that the SkyWalk is NOT the way it appears in the 'artist rendition' on the promotions and website. The SkyWalk is NOT directly over the Colorado River on the main gorge of the canyon, but rather on the side of a smaller side canyon with a short stretch of the river visible in the distance. And it is NOT a 4000 foot straight drop beneath the SkyWalk- like everywhere in the canyon, the walls have ledges and slopes. It is probably less than a thousand feet to the first rubble pile beneath the SkyWalk.
Walking over a glass platform (at the Grand Canyon or anywhere else) is a weird experience - seeing empty space beneath your feet. But I personally found the SkyWalk to be a bit of a let down - the view through the floor really is not that exciting. Some people may find it worth the money, but many of the people when I was there felt that they had been ripped-off.
Note that the SkyWalk and Grand Canyon West are NOT part of the famous Grand Canyon National Park (which is far to the east). The SkyWalk is on the Hualapai Indian reservation and is ran by a promoter out of Las Vegas. I appreciate the Hualapai trying to earn some money (they have a lot of poverty), but the Vegas promoters have turned it into something of an over-hyped tourist trap (in my personal opinion).

GRAND CANYON SKYWALK | History of the Skywalk at the West Rim
History “Once a dream … now a reality.” Businessman David Jin envisioned the Skywalk after soaring through the Grand Canyon on a helicopter.
Would I need to make a reservation to go on the GRAND CANYON SKYWALK in September?
Answer: In regards to the post above... the SkyWalk is located on the Hualapai Indian Reservation near Lake Mead (an area called Grand Canyon West). It is NOT in Grand Canyon National Park nor is it associated with the National Park system in any way (the National Park is about a 100 miles upstream in a very different part of the canyon).
While you can make reservations for the SkyWalk (see link below), I doubt that you would need them. I went on a weekend shortly after they opened and while there were plenty of people there, it was no where near capacity (there was no wait to get on the SkyWalk itself and they were not limiting how long people could stay on it). I have heard that visitations have increased a little since then, but not significantly. So I would be very surprised if you would need reservations by Sept when the peak summer tourist season is already starting to decline.
Note that you can not drive right to the SkyWalk, you have to take shuttles there from the airport visitor center as part of a larger tour package. As a result, there were often substantial waits in line for the buses when I visited even though there were not really large crowds. Because of this, make sure you get there early enough as they close the SkyWalk around dusk, it would probably take the better part of an hour (or more) to get parked, get tickets, take the shuttle there, etc. Hopefully this has improved as they get the swing of things.
You may also be wise to do a little more research about it before spending the considerable time and money to visit it. There are many misconceptions about it (such as it being part of the National Park or it being located 4000 feet over the Colorado River) that are not true. I personally found the experience to be over-priced and under-impressive, but to each their own.

Is the GRAND CANYON SKYWALK nice?
We will be going around the southwest US, and we might stop and see the skywalk on the grand canyon. I heard that you cant take pictures on the skywalk, is it only on the little glass walkway where you cant take pictures, or are you not allowed to take any pictures once you enter the whole complex? Also I heard you could see a live performance by some Hualapai Indians, is the performance nice and can you take pictures? Is it worth visiting the skywalk or should I pass.
Answer: Its pretty cool but VERY pricey - you really get nickle and dimed by the Hualapai's as they are the only game in town.
You cannot bring anything with you out on the skywalk - cameras, backpacks, purses, camcorders, etc. And you have to wear booties over your shoes.
Otherwise, you can take pictures of everything else

Answer: I was disapointed with teh Skywalk and would not go again, if you have not been to the Grand Canyon you will probably not recognise it from the TV, the Skywalk is West of the Canyon is not in the Grand Canyon National Park. The Grand Canyon ytou have seen on the TV is the South Rim and this is in my opinion the best place to go.

Hows the GRAND CANYON SKYWALK? Worth the $ and trip?
I was thinking of going to check out the Grand canyon skywalk this summer but wanted to know if its worth the price of admission and the long, out of the way trip?
Answer: I was actually at the SkyWalk about two months ago (shortly after it opened). Of course, the value of an experience is pretty subjective and may vary greatly from one person to another depending on tastes, so I can only speak for myself. That being said, I found the SkyWalk experience to be very over-rated and the promotions misleading.
Despite the claims on the website, the SkyWalk is not located 4000 feet over the Colorado River on the main gorge of the canyon, but rather up a small dry side canyon with a small section of the river and main gorge visible about a half mile away in the distance. The drop directly below the SkyWalk is probably about a 1000 feet to a ledge of rock and rubble.
As for actually walking out on the SkyWalk... there is something freaky and unnatural about seeing empty space beneath your feet the first time you step out over the edge, but it does not really feel like walking on air. The SkyWalk itself is held up by 2 large metal support beams that block about a third of the view through the floor, so rather than a complete 360 view below, you basically look down between the two support beams, which makes it feel more like looking through a trap door in the floor. And what you see below, is a pile of rocks and rubble against the cliff face. You could pretty much get the same experience with a glass platform over any significant distance - you don't really get any better sense of the canyon itself when looking through the floor.
Now the view looking out over the rail of the SkyWalk toward the larger canyon IS quite scenic, but no different than the same view while standing on the rim 50 feet away. And to be honest, I found the view from nearby Guano Point (the only other overlook at Grand Canyon West you are allowed to visit) to be more impressive without the SkyWalk. You are NOT allowed to take cameras on the SkyWalk. It costs $25 per person to go on the SkyWalk, but you can't reach it without buying a larger tour package ($50 min), so the total cost per person ends up being $75 ($81 with tax).
Another thing that many visitors are confused about is that the SkyWalk is not in Grand Canyon National Park or anywhere near it. It is located about 100 river miles downstream from the park, just before the river empties into Lake Mead and is ran by the Hualapai Indian Reservation. While this is still very scenic country (especially if you have not visited the southwest before), the canyon here is not as deep, wide or has as many spires and shapes as in the National Park to the east.
Don't get me wrong... I am not saying don't ever visit the SkyWalk or that it is not a pretty area, but I am saying you should take the marketing hype with a large grain of salt and make sure you know what you will be seeing and getting and what you won't - it is NOT the same as visiting the National Park - but to each their own. Some people really enjoy the SkyWalk experience, but many visitors go away feeling like it is a rip-off. Personally, I much prefer the National Park which is cheaper, has more dramatic scenery, more overlooks and gives you more freedom to roam and explore on your own.

Do I have to make a reservation on GRAND CANYON SKYWALK?
I will go to Grand Canyon in June. If I wanna visit skywalk and walk on it, do I have to make the reservation? How much is the admission fee?
Thank you!
Answer: I was actually at the SkyWalk about a month ago. It costs $25 per person to actually walk on the SkyWalk, but you can't just drive up to the SkyWalk itself - you can only reach it by shuttle bus as part of a larger package, the cheapest of which is $50 per person. Thus the total true minimum cost to go on the SkyWalk is $75 per person (with slight discounts for Arizona residents).
You can make reservations (see website link below), but I doubt you will need them. I went the second weekend after it opened and did not have reservations. They were somewhat busy, but no where near capacity. The SkyWalk can handle something like 100+ people at a time, but there were never more than a few dozen people on it any time when I was there. I have heard that visitor rates continue to be far below capacity (and below what they expected).
Note that even with the fairly modest number of visitors when I was there, it still was too much for the shuttle bus service that you must take between the airport visitor center (where all visitors must park their cars) and Eagle Point (where the SkyWalk is). The shuttle only came around about every 20 minutes, by which time more people were in line than in could hold. As a result, you had to wait 20-40 minutes (in the sun with no seats or shade) when going from one spot to another on the 'package'. This was uncomfortable a month ago, it would be miserable in summer. Hopefully this will improve with time.
I should probably warn you as well, that the SkyWalk is NOT as it appears in the artist rendition on the promotions and website. It is NOT located over the Colorado River on the main gorge of the Grand Canyon, but rather is located on the side of a smaller dry side canyon about a half-mile off the main gorge (you can only see a little stretch of the river in the distance). What you see below you on the SkyWalk is a pile of rubble and ledges about a thousand feet down (NOT 4000 feet as claimed in some promotions - like most places in the canyon, the walls are not sheer cliffs from top to bottom, but are broken into slopes and ledges).
While walking on a glass platform is unnerving and the views of the surrounding canyon scenery are pretty, I found the actual SkyWalk experience to be a bit of a let down (many of the people visiting when I was were outright angry and felt like they had been ripped off).
Note that SkyWalk is NOT a part of the famous Grand Canyon National Park (which is far to the east in a very different part of the canyon). The SkyWalk is located on the Hualapai Indian Reservation shortly before the canyon empties into Lake Mead and was developed in conjunction with Las Vegas promoters to appeal to Las Vegas tourists (because it is closer to than the National Park). The Hualapai suffer from a great deal of poverty (they are too close to Las Vegas to compete with a casino) and I honestly hope they find a way to leverage their beautiful landscape to help their people, but the misleading promotions and over-hyped approach to the SkyWalk is going to leave a bad taste in many visitors mouths.
