The Freedom riders of 1961. I need a like 2 event that are similar to what they did.

Something more similar would be illegal immigrants and hispanics demonstrating to protest the passage of state immigration laws.

FREEDOM RIDERS...?
Help! for my exam i have been told to find out about Freedom riders...i know they were involved in the bus boycott, but i need more detailed info, and the web provides stuff too detailed for me to process...please help me.
Answer: The Freedom Rides were a series of nonviolent, direct demonstrations performed in 1961 as part of the U.S. civil rights movement. Volunteers, African American and white, many of whom were college students, called Freedom riders, rode in interstate buses into the segregated southern United States to test the a 1960 which outlawed racial segregation in interstate transportation facilities, including bus stations and railroad terminals. A total of 436 Freedom riders were arrested for trespassing, unlawful assembly, violating state and local Jim Crow laws, etc. They followed on the heels of dramatic "sit-ins" against segregated lunch counters conducted by students and youth throughout the South beginning in 1960.
Thirteen black and white Freedom riders rode into Washington, D.C. on May 4, 1961, in two buses which were to take the group of mixed black and white protesters throughout the South to New Orleans. The Freedom riders faced much resistance against their cause but ultimately developed strong support from people both inside and outside the South for their efforts.
The worst violence that occurred during the Freedom Rides was when the buses approached Birmingham, Alabama. Police chief Eugene "Bull" Connor openly conspired with Ku Klux Klan members to beat and harass Freedom riders. The Greyhound bus was firebombed in Anniston, Alabama, forcing Riders to exit where upon they were viciously beaten.
These courageous acts kept the Freedom Rides going at a critical juncture in the civil rights movement.
Thus the Freedom Rides established great credibility with progressive blacks and whites throughout the United States who became motivated to engage in direct action for civil rights. Perhaps most significantly, Freedom riders impressed blacks living in rural areas throughout the South who later formed the backbone of the civil rights movement. This credibility inspired many subsequent civil rights campaigns, including voter registration, freedom schools, and the black power movement.

What did the FREEDOM RIDERS actually do?
like i get that they rode the bus in to the South. So was it illegal for blacks to ride the bus in the South?
so did blacks have to ride separate busses?
Answer: In the South during desegregation, blacks had to ride in the back of the bus. If whites wanted the seats, blacks had to give them up. And, often times, a white guy would get on the bus early and sit very near the back, leaving only one or two rows for black passengers. This, of course, meant very few black passengers could ride the bus. And, no, there were not separate buses provided for black passengers. If they were forced off the bus because of a lack of seats, they had to wait for the next bus and hope for a seat on that bus.
The bus terminals were also segregated with separate restrooms, water fountains and seating areas. If there was a restaurant in the terminal, the seating area was for whites only. Blacks had to go outside and get their food from a side door and eat outside the restaurant.
What made the Freedom riders dangerous for the South was the fact that they were integrated and whites and blacks sat together. Also when they came into an area, the riders, regardless of race, insisted on using the white-only facilities and eating in the dining area of the restaurant. The intent of the Freedom riders was to challenge segregation by purposely breaking unjust laws. Because the Freedom riders challenged segregation laws, Southern whites, led by the KKK, met them at many terminals and beat them.
One of the more famous photos of the Freedom riders was snapped by the Birmingham News and shows an attack in Birmingham, Alabama. This photo was picked up by the AP and sent around the world. It was published on the front page of Tokyo, Japan, where a delegation of Birmingham business and political leaders were holding trade talks. Needless to say the talks did not go well. However, embarrassed by the negative publicity, these political and business leaders went back to Birmingham determined to bring more equality to the city, realizing the economic costs of segregation. Although change did not happen overnight, this event set in motion negotiations between Birmingham city leaders and civil rights leaders. So, even though the Freedom riders endured frequent beatings, they accomplished their goal by bringing adverse national and international publicity to the situation that existed in the South.

How did the FREEDOM RIDERS help abolish segregation in the south?
(: thanks
Answer: Freedom riders joined the cause to abolish segregation in buses so they would ride through different states in the deep south where black and whites would ride together in the buses but would be attacked by mobs of anti segregationists and even explode the buses they would ride on because the deep south didn't want to integrate. eventually because of lost in business, bus companies allowed the integration of the races in buses. thus the Freedom riders were a big part of the civil rights movement

can someone give me a personal opinion about the FREEDOM RIDERS its for an essay?
Like I said its for a history paper. Can somebody please give an opinion on how they felt during that time or their perception? thanks!
Answer: The Kennedys called for a "cooling off period" and condemned the Rides as unpatriotic because they embarrassed the nation on the world stage. Attorney General Robert Kennedy — the chief law enforcement officer of the land — was quoted as saying that he "Does not feel that the Department of Justice can side with one group or the other in disputes over Constitutional rights."
The Freedom Rides established great credibility with blacks and whites throughout the United States who became motivated to engage in direct action for civil rights. Perhaps most significantly, Freedom riders, facing such danger on their behalf, impressed blacks living in rural areas throughout the South who later formed the backbone of the civil rights movement. This credibility inspired many subsequent civil rights campaigns, including voter registration, freedom schools, and the black power movement.

Did Conservatives complain of FREEDOM RIDERS hygiene during the Civil Rights Movement, too?
To conservatives, if youre not getting dirty while protesting, then youre just a lazy slob indicative of your lack of seriousness to a movement.
But to conservatives, if you do get dirty in your struggles, then it shows youre a lazy bum who obviously cant stand for a protracted movement while in a dapper two-piece suit.
They frame the debate so youd lose either way!
Answer: Classic conservative hypocrisy.
They do not care about the merits of an argument, they only care about getting it their way.

what were the effects of the movement?
how did american people respond to the movement?
I would really appreciate if you could answer one or more of these questions. I know that there prrety difficult, but if you have time, please help me?
thanks!!
Answer: i believe that the Freedom riders were organized by the SNCC, the student non-violence coordinating committee. black and white students rode buses into the most racially segregated parts of the deep south in order to show a spirit of civil disobedience. they rode to montgomery, mississippi, and birmingham, i believe. in those cities they were attacked brutally and when the news was broadcasted, americans began to feel ashamed of the deep racial hatred.

What was the purpose and accomplishment of the FREEDOM RIDERS?
Answer: "Civil Rights activists called Freedom riders, rode in interstate buses into the segregated southern United States to test the United States Supreme Court decision Boynton v. Virginia, (1960) 364 U.S. [overturned a judgment convicting an African American law student for trespassing by being in a restaurant in a bus terminal which was "whites only."] ... All but a very small number were sponsored by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) while the others belonged to the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). They followed on the heels of dramatic "sit-ins" against segregated lunch counters conducted by students and youth throughout the South, and boycotts beginning in 1960. The names of that summer's Riders included James L. Farmer, William Mahoney, John Lewis, Jim Zwerg, James Peck, George Bundy Smith, Frederick Leonard, and William Sloane Coffin, among others totaling 436. Three-fourths of the Riders were under 30. They were mostly male and evenly divided between black and white."
"Thus the Freedom Rides established great credibility with progressive blacks and whites throughout the United States who became motivated to engage in direct action for civil rights. Perhaps most significantly, Freedom riders impressed blacks living in rural areas throughout the South who later formed the backbone of the civil rights movement. This credibility inspired many subsequent civil rights campaigns, including voter registration, freedom schools, and the black power movement."
"During their journey, the original group of 13 grew to almost 450, but the ride ended when Robert Kennedy finally issued an injunction forcing segregationist states to enforce the federal law."
"During the summer of 1961, Freedom riders also campaigned against other forms of racial discrimination. They sat together in segregated restaurants, lunch counters and hotels. This was especially effective when it concerned large companies who, fearing boycotts in the North, began to desegregate their businesses."
"Attorney General Robert Kennedy petitioned the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) to draft regulations to end racial segregation in bus terminals. The ICC was reluctant, but in September of 1961 it issued the necessary orders, and the new policies went into effect on November 3, 1961."
