After yesterdays HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING how safe do you think your children are at school?
Isnt sad that nowadays we arent at all safe? Why do you think this happens? Even tough safety issues are all around the globe, why does this happen (mostly) in US schools? I just listened to a 911 call one mother made, saying her kid call her from his mobile and she obviously was scared to death, I hope none of us nor our children are ever in this situation. Thoughts? At least all of us think about the same, it is crazy!
Answer: It is sad, but on the other hand, it is a relatively dangerous world, what with terrorism (in multiple forms, domestic and foreign), gangs, sickos, etc., I fear that it is something that we cannot really do everything necessary to prevent. We can take precautions, and make plans on how to react to an incident, but even the Secret Service realizes that is someone REALLY wants to kill someone else, and is willing to give up their life in the process, it is almost impossible to prevent it. You cannot account for insanity, or a determined murderer, all you can do is try.
Statistically speaking, children are incredibly safe in any given school. There are many, many thousands of schools in the country, so many that I could not get a figure with a quick Google search. In those thousands of schools, there are literally millions of students attending. Since January 1979, 67 students have been killed by either fellow students or adult perpetrators on school grounds, not counting the 32 murdered at Virginia Tech.
That is 99 students of varying ages in 26 years. Statistically, that is insignificant, but try telling the parents of those children that. It is horrible and terrifying, but there it is. I heard an interview of one of the students in this latest shooting, and she said that the 14 year old student had walked around saying he was going to "get them back" but she "didn't think he really meant it." I don't know what the answer is, but I don't think we are going to like it...
I was surprised to find that this goes on elsewhere in the world with rather frightening regularity and usually the body count is much, much higher. From what I could tell in my research, it was because fully automatic weapons are so available in many parts of the world, especially the less developed nations. Fully automatic weapons seemed to be the weapon of choice overseas. I really thought that this was a U.S. happening, but doesn't seem to be the case when you do the research.
I know that several of the respondents are blaming this on the U.S. culture, but the fact is that there are 300 million plus people in the U.S., and with that many people you are sure to find some mentally ill and willing to take their anger out on others; and children seem to be such easy targets. If they could not use guns, they would use something else. Guns are just more....convenient. I spent 20 years in the Army and fought in the first Gulf war. Killing someone is a VERY traumatic event, even when sanctioned by all the cultural and legal webs we weave, and I firmly believe that someone would honestly HAVE to be insane to enjoy doing it, or to do it to a child. That's just my opinion, of course.

Answer: The previous answerer is wrong. You can find pics of every school shooter almost anywhere on the web. Because the shooter in Cleveland was white, and the victims were black, they're keeping info to a minimum. They don't want to get into the racial attacks the shooter faced, or how his plight was ignored by teachers.

Colimbine HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING. What do you think the reason was?
I think it was retailation for bullying that went way out of control combined with depression and mental illness or the shooters?
Michael Morre thinks it is about gun control and about the fact that WMD are made in the community.
Other people think if the shooters were separated it would not have happend.
I think if we stop tollerating bullying, see waring signs and get people help this is the solution.

Both myself and my BF felt picked on in middle and high school. While we understood how the school makes heros in the fish bowl and does not respond to the ways other students are hurt by the heros with violence or humiation we did get angry, but not that angry.
Michael Moore can make a good movie, but that one did really miss the point and was not well done. Do some reasearch and get a clue. I should write him. So many people watched that. I talk about it with people and say how incorrect it is. Perhaps that is good because it gets discussion going on the subject even if it starts off with that movie was wrong. I do not think that was his intention however. I think he wanted to talk about gun control perhaps. Gun control is another issue and I do not believe in it. I believe in teaching how to handle guns safely and keep kids from getting hurt by them especially young children that might think they are a toy. This way beyond gun control. This was a more complex issue.
Answer: One of the shooters was from N.W. Ohio originally and I think his family's move to Colorado was a huge culture shock for Dillon. From being a laid back kid with friends in Ohio, to the "new kid" who didn't quite fit in with the Columbine students, not to mention the new religious pressures he faced by the strong Christian populous there, who looked down upon others outside the clique.
Peer pressure, when you have no "real" peers can leave anyone outside of the circle, so he found a friend ... one who also felt cast out by the same pressures. Left with themselves and violent video games, I imagine their imaginations went wild as the took their frustrations out on "people" as they played in their surreal video world of destruction.
Sometimes, what we say can come back to haunt us, and what we think can become reality ... dreams come true, as do nightmares.
It pains me, that so much attention be given to the victims of Columbine (though much sympathy is due them and their families) when the initial victims of Columbine have been written off as "shooters and murders" instead of what the truth is. The truth, is that these two boys were kids too and deserve sympathy and understanding ... in doing so, we all may find understanding of the total situation, and learn to prevent this type of event from ever happening again.

Answer: it happended becuase they were being picked on for so long for being "different" you can only be picked on for so long before you lose control. when your peers pick on u constantly about the same thing, you start to let it eat away at you(know the feeling was picked on through school and after columbine because i felt for the boys who did it i had to speak with the school counselor cuz the kids in my class where afraid i was gonna do something like that and that i had connections to them 2 boys)
i always felt safe when i was in school, graduated in 2001
my school did have camera's and the doors into the school were all locked, but thats becuase someone tried to kidnap a kid. but now i believe there are more cameras, my sister goes to that same school and they have had a cpl bomb threat notes left.
to bare arms...hmmm....with extensive background checks sure.
you cant control the size of the schools most places dont have the funding to have more then one school or the kids would have to travel to far. but with security and cameras and kids who are observant then they should be able to control the situation.
school shootings will increase, they give them so much media attention and go as far as showing how to hide guns in your clothes! and you can find out how to make a bomb any where online.

The Columbine HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING in 1999?
I just saw a online video og the Columbine High school shooting back in 1999. Im wondering did they change the high school after the shooting? Where did the students that were killed buried? When did the school reopen, and is anything the same about the high school....What was graduations like years after the shooting?
Answer: This is a painful subject for the people who live there.
Of course they changed the library where so many were killed by Klebold and Harris!
Perhaps you can search elsewhere in cyberspace and the Web in general to find some kind of blog that will provide a healthy and school safety-security perspective from the tragedy approaching its tenth anniversary. Maybe you can call a Social Services hotline about a support group that is seeking to reach to others who are concerned to apply the "lessons" of such a horrific school shooting - - there were other such acts of planned violence at N. Illinois University a year ago on Valentine's Day and the Virginia Tech shootings of 2006.
Talk to a school counselor if you are finding that this subject is one that fascinates you and maybe you can channel that interest and quest for knowledge in ways that will prevent future violence and/or threats and fear.

Answer: Apparently there is a new book by a Dave Cullen that is supposed to be excellent. He researched thousands of interviews, videos and documents and says the killers were not "bullied" as previously believed but two young men with deep psychological problems
