How to prevent a MOUNTAIN LION attack?
Me and my friend are going backpacking and we are worried bout Mountain lion attacks. we have knifes and blow horns, but were wondering what we would do if we saw a Mountain lion and if it notices us?
Answer: You don't need to worry at all about Mountain lions. I regularly go hiking, backpacking and mountain biking alone and with my family including my young son in Mountain lion and black bear territory in all parts of California without any weapons whatsoever and I've never even seen a Mountain lion but I would be awed and amazed if I did. Solo I usually sleep under the stars and with family we sleep under a tarp with a mosquito netting tent only. So don't let your fears get the better of you; you're safer out there.
Mountain lions are rarely seen and almost all attacks have been by young lions attacking lone hikers, mostly women, because they're smaller I guess, in areas where development has encroached on Mountain lion territory reducing their food supply and forcing them to take unnecessary risks, not deep in the woods where the number of lions are balanced with the number of deer they need to eat.
It's absolutely ridiculous to advise backpackers to carry firearms or even pepper spray anywhere outside of grizzly or brown bear territory. Anyone who'd say such a thing here is probably just a troll and anyone who'd actually carry a five pound handgun if they didn't have to in the woods is a paranoiac.
The only thing you need to fear in the woods is feeding the bears by being negligent in hanging your food from trees or keeping it in a certified bear canister.
If you find a bear or Mountain lion is actually stalking you the recommended course of action is for everyone to stand together to appear bigger, keep children near but don't bend too deeply to pick them up, shout, wave your arms, throw rocks or pine cones in the general direction of the animal if it approaches, and if worst comes to worst go for the eyes.

What do you do during a MOUNTAIN LION encounter?
Ive never been to a wildlife or national park. After watching animal shows on TV depicting wild animal attacks, I saw how unpredictable and nasty Mountain lions can be. So what are some caution tips when encountering a Mountain lion? Need good answers.
Answer: Mountain lions are not nasty. Usually the ONLY time they are a threat to humans is when they are protecting young or are seriously injured and have not been able to hunt and are straving. It is best NEVER to run if you are approached by a Mountain lion. Stand your ground and try to look as big as possible, open your jacket up, put your backpack on your head, raise your arms above your head, etc. If the Mountain lion does not run or approaches you, you can yell at it, throw rocks or other objects at it. You can carry a walking stick and pound it on the ground or on a branch or tree trunk to make noise to scare it off as well. If there you are ever faced with a Mountain lion actually attacking you (once again, very rare that this would happen), it is suggested that you fight back as the average human outweighs a Mountain lion and although you may be seriously injured, you may still survive with your life. Go for eyes, nose or other vulnerable spots.

What do i need to go MOUNTAIN LION hunting?
I am planning on going Mountain lion hunting in North Dakota here in about a week and a half. I was just wondering what kind of calls should I use and should I use a decoy? or a Blind? What other important tools should i have with me? Thanks alot!
Answer: You may need a guide and You need blood hounds trained for treeing cougars, radio collars for the dogs to track them. A good horse to chase after the dogs. I have not heard of any hunter having any success Mt. lion hunting otherwise. A medium caliber hand gun .like 375 mag will suffice to dispatch the lion. A hunting license and lion tag.
Decoys and blinds work on deer and varmint but not Lion. Good luck!

What are the chance to meet a MOUNTAIN LION in the Yosemite Park ?
Hi, I heard there are some Mountain lion in the Yosemite Park, in the US.
Are there many risk to meet one of them ?
Answer: There are a fair number of Mountain lions in the Yosemite Park. However, the chances of encountering one are very slim. They do not like people and will make every effort to avoid us. There could be one within 50 yards of you and you would probably never see it. They blend in very well with their environment and stay very still for long periods of time. You certainly wouldn't need to worry about being attacked by one. That is very, very rare.

Is it possible for a MOUNTAIN LION to live in Iowa?
A little while ago near where I live somebody found possible evidence of a Mountain lion. Can it live here? Should i be worried about my outdoor animals? How would it have gotten here? Is it possible that its just movin through or what?
Answer: There have been reports of mountian lions in Iowa for years, and there is probably some truth behind them. Their historic range included all of Iowa, so they could easily live there again if allowed.
Worried? Not unless they start taking animals near yours.
There are several theories about the 'returns' of the cats in Iowa and Nebraska- the most common theories involve them coming from the Dakotas. The ones they find so far have been younger animals, probably looking for new territories.

MOUNTAIN LION?
Okay,
My horse was out in a pasture with two other horses for about a week. We were going to put them in pasture during the day, and bring them into stalls during the night, but we didnt have stalls available at that time so we just kept them in the pasture.
There have been Mountain lions sighted in the area, and supposedly all the animals are coming down from the woods (our ranch has woods behind it, and the trail leads from our ranch to other ranches and roads is surrounded in trees) to go to the trail. Our pasture was right on top of the hill right next to the trail (you could open the gate from the pasture and youd be on the trail), so anyway, I came out to ride my horse and she had these marks on her chest on her body. They were in a perfect claw mark, and everyone who has looked at it has said that it was probably a Mountain lion.) I guess she could be mistaken for a deer in the dark, because she is a bay and is *very* fine-boned. Continued in additional details.
The other horses in the pasture had some scrapes and scratches, but I guess they could have gotten it from a fence. . . Id post a picture of my horses chest if I had one. . . I might be able to take one and then post another question with the pic. . . So, I was just wondering, should she get a tetnus shot or something to keep her from getting an infection, should we have a vet come to look at it, or what? (We are also turning them out now in small pastures next to the barn and then putting them back in the stalls, so they wont be out at night.)
She also had more marks, but they werent as symmetrical as the one on her chest, as the one on her chest looked like if you put a cats claw up to it, it would fit it, but it would just be larger than the cats. She had a large scrape on her dock, where there is no hair and dry skin is coming off. She also had a scrape with four lines on it on her flank, and another faint one on her barrel.
She is a good kicker, as Ive unfortunately seen her try to kick other horses that she obviously disliked, and has great aim. (Thats why we only put her out with the two horses that shes friends with.) So hopefully she kicked whatever it was. . . .
Answer: I think Jeff, Kevin, and most of the others here are correct- this was indeed a lion attack, and you are very lucky your mare wasn't killed by the lion. Mountain lions are one of the 3 main predators of horses in the wild- and they are the reason why horses evolved with long manes. Their favorite hunting technique is one which involves ambush- they love to jump off something, like a tree, a large boulder, or a cliff, and since you mention that your property is on the top of a wooded hill, there were undoubtedly plenty of places in those woods for the lion to hide. When a lion jumps like that, its intention is to land on the horse's back, and kill the animal by biting through the spinal cord at the top of the skull, near the ears or poll. Horses evolved long manes which have no nerves in them for protection against this- the hair comes away easily, and because there are no nerves, the horse feels no pain and can react defensively by bucking, running, and rearing to get the lion off. All the lion usually gets in most cases is a mouthful of horsehair and a good sharp kick for her trouble ( most of the lions which live closest to people are usually females, and more often than not, they have cubs which must be fed) and she doesn't get to enjoy much of a meal.
As far as caring for your mare goes, the thing to remember about claw marks is that they get infected and fester easily- which is why you need to keep that mark thoroughly clean and covered with a topical antibiotic- and why you need to make sure your mare is current on her tetanus and rabies shots. Also, from now on, you need to keep your horses inside at night- Mountain lions' preferred hunting time is during the night or in the very early morning. Lastly, I agree with what a couple of the others said in that you need to alert the wildlife authorities in your area about a possible lion attack, and let your neighbors know about this as well, so they can be on the alert and protect their stock. If you or your neighbors have dogs ( and what ranch owner doesn't?) then you need to keep THEM inside at night too, so they don't get killed by a marauding lion.
Good luck to you, and I hope your mare heals up well.

Where is the best place to hide from a MOUNTAIN LION?
If you were to see a Mountain lion, how should you hide from it?
Answer: If you see a Mountain lion, remain calm. Don't run, because this resembles the activity of prey. Stand where you are, wave your hands in the air, and shout. If the lion acts aggressively, throw rocks. Your object is to convince the lion that you are not prey, and may be dangerous yourself. If there are children with you, pick them up so that they will appear bigger than they are.
Another way to avoid them is stay away from their teritories

My Cousin wants to go MOUNTAIN LION hunting. What caliber gun does he need to take for the hunt?
My cousin is planning a Mountain lion Hunting trip. He has a guy with a pack of dogs trained for hunting lions, taking him. Hes not sure what caliber gun he needs for the hunt. The guns he has are....
Remington and Marlin 22lr (We both agree that these guns would never do on a trip like this.)
Smith & Wesson .40 semi-auto handgun. (Hes thinking of taking this gun only as a back up.)
Ruger Hawkeye .204 bolt action rifle with a Leupold scope.
Remington 710 .300 Win. Mag. with 3-9x40 Bushnell scope.
Benelli Nova 12 gauge pump shotgun.
Which one of these guns would do for his trip? Or does he need another caliber gun for the hunt?
James S : You have been reported, dont insult me or anyone else. By the way, its NOT illegal to hunt moutiain lions. Get your facts straight before you answer a question.
I should state that we live in Nevada, Where it is LEGAL to hunt Mountain lions.
Forgot to mention, my cousin also has a Winchester Model 94 Ranger .30-30 lever action.
Answer: Most of the old farmers where I hunt deer usually use their 30/30 for pest control when needed so pretty much anything other than the .22 should be fine. If you are using dogs, you are going to end up treeing them and shooting from a distance of 20 - 30 yards max. BTW - Tie up the dogs BEFORE you shoot, a wounded cat will take a few dogs with them if they get a chance.
For those that don't know Wa state has cougar season from Aug - Mar with a bag limit of 2. We've outlawed hunting with hounds, so you have to do it on foot. These are not nice cute cuddly animals, they are top of the food chain predators who do kill cute little animals like deer to feed upon. They also kill any farm animals they can get, and will quite often stay in one area and feed exclusively off of calfs, sheep, goats, etc. at which time the farmers have to kill them.

Can a MOUNTAIN LION kill a human being?
My coworkers are in a dilemma, so if you were hiking and you came across a Mountain lion, could it kill you? What do you think?
Answer: A Mountain lion is more than capable of killing a human. It doesn't matter how large or strong you are, no human will ever be as strong as a Mountain lion, and that's without bringing their huge teeth, powerful jaws and eighteen razor-sharp claws into the equation. However, just because they CAN kill you doesn't mean they WILL. Attacks on humans are rare - they tend to avoid us whenever possible. If confronted, you can usually intimidate a Mountain lion into backing down by raising your arms and shouting - this makes you appear larger and more dangerous. You should never turn your back or run from any predatory animal, as this makes you seem like prey and can initiate the hunting instinct. Also, do not look them in the eye, as direct eye contact is a threat among many animals, including Mountain lions, and could increase the likelihood of an attack.

what are the chances a MOUNTAIN LION will attack me in San Diego?
if a Mountain lion is in front of me what are the chances that it will attack me? a Mountain lion in San Diego.
is it safe to go close to it?
Answer: They're not spotted that often, but I guess it depends on where you're going.
It's usually advised to try and make yourself look bigger if you see one -- raise your arms over your head for example.
But otherwise, uh, no, you do not want to be going close to it.
The good news is if you're encountering one, you're unlikely to actually see it coming. Good odds it will be hiding in a tree or something and then will pounce on you. Kind of like shark attacks.

So im at my brothers house and my mom just called me and said someone saw a Mountain lion by our house. And i have to walk home in a little bit because my car is at home and his car is with his wife at work. What do i do? This is serious.
Answer: It'll go for you throat or try to jab at your face first. Most of the time it'll just take off when it sees you. Don't run if it chases you because you wont outrun it. Use your legs to keep its front to legs on the ground. Use your hands to grab the sides of their mouth right behind their canines on their gums. Toss your arm down it's throat if you have to, they have a sensitive gag reflex.
