A Petri Dish Of Activism, And Germs
The chorus began quietly at a recent strategy session inside Zuccotti Park, with a single cough from a security team member, a muffled hack between puffs on his cigarette. Then a colleague followed. Then another. Soon the discussion had devolved into a fit of wheezing, with one protester blowing his nose into the mulch between clusters of tents. - By MATT FLEGENHEIMER; Anemona Hartocollis contributed reporting.

How many years does it take a Human to catch the NOROVIRUS?
I heard that it comes every 6 or 7 years, because your body becomes complacent or that another new strain emerges. When you get a strain of Norovirus, your body learns to deal with it and becomes immune I have been told, however new strains emerge every 6 or 7 years which eventually you catch again with slightly different affects. Is this true?
Answer: You loose your immunity after approximately 3 months, so you can catch the same strain repeatedly.
There are different strains, but it doesn't make much difference to what you catch because of the short lived immunity.
I hope this answered your question, I didn't quite understand it.

Can you catch the NOROVIRUS just from touching your mouth?
As an emetophobe, I have done a lot of research on how you catch the Norovirus. All websites I have been to say that in order to catch the virus you must have it on your hands and put your hand/fingers IN your mouth/nose/eye. Is it possible to just touch your lips and get the virus?
Answer: That's an interesting question. I don't think just touching your lips would make you sick, but it would be pretty much inevitable that the germs would be transferred from your lips to the inside of your mouth. It's safer to just completely keep your hands away from your face unless you know they're clean.

Can the symptoms of Salmonella be distinguished from NOROVIRUS symptoms?
I have read about the different strains of food poisoning and I was wondering if Salmonella symptoms can be easily distinguished from Norovirus. I have also heard there are different strains of Salmonella and some can be worse than others.
Answer: With Norovirus, vomiting is a predominant symptom (usually). Typically there is no fever or low grade.
Most often, people complain of having diarrhea and vomiting at the same time and very watery diarrhea.
With Salmonella, diarrhea is the predominant symptoms. Vomiting doesn't occur too often. Often with a fever over 101. Some of the Salmonella strains associated with reptiles can be a little more severe. The most common Salmonella is Enteriditis (spelling?), which is very commonly associated with eggs or poultry.
Other sources of food poisoning will look very similar to one or both of these. The only way to be sure is to have a stool culture done to see if a person has Salmonella or one of the other 3 testable bacterial GI pathogens. The bacterial stool culture test typically also include: E-Coli (or shiga toxin producing bacteria), Shigella, and Campylobacter. There are many other bacterias that cannot or will not be tested. Norovirus testing is not widely available and usually done at government laboratories in case of outbreaks only. (at least in the USA).

How likely am I to get NOROVIRUS if roommate has it?
My roommate started throwing up all of a sudden today, and all symptoms point to the stupid Norovirus. Its spreading around campus and I really need to know how contagious it is. We were laying on her bed talking last night, is that close enough to catch it?
xfiles: I go to Grand Valley thats why Im wondering lol. I saw how bad it got at Hope and i was shocked! I really hope that doesnt happen here!
Answer: As long as you wash your hands before touching your face/mouth/eyes/nose, you will NOT get it.The only way to get it is to ingest it.You can live with a family of 10 people who got it and you will not get it as long as you keep clean.
Also, I advise you to purchase bleach and make a bleach water solution via spray bottle.Bleach is the only thing that will kill noro. Not hand sanitizer or Lysol.
It would be awfully nice of you to bleach out the bathroom too.Just spray the bleach water on the faucets, light switches, door handles etc.
You can copy this and put it up in the halls to alarm people on how to prevent it.Good luck!
The Norwalk virus is known as the nasty 24 hour bug that causes and sudden watery diarrhea and/or vomiting.Usually non life threating but can cause complications in the very young, elderly and those with compromised immune systems.
PREVENTION-Wash your hands before preparing food/eating food and most importantly, TOUCHING YOUR MOUTH/NOSE/EYES.
The ONLY way to become infected with this virus is if you ingest the contaminated fecal/vomit particles through your eyes, nose and mouth.
It is impossible to "breathe" in the virus BUT possible to become infected by breathing in aerosol "spray" droplets from someone vomiting right next to you.(the droplets settle within minuted but can still infect someone until cleaned with bleach)
Even if your whole family breaks out with this virus, you can prevent it by washing your hands for at least 15-20 seconds with warm water and soap.Remember that you are not killing the virus, you are washing it down the drain even if you use an antibacterial soap (which only kills bacteria, not viruses) hand sanitizers are also not successful in killing the virus.
If a member of your family comes down with the virus, let them know to wash their hands AFTER a bowel movement and vomiting.
To clean infected areas, clean with BLEACH.Clean bathrooms (all infected areas) with a bleach solution as soon as possible and be sure to prevent cross contamination and wash your hands afterwards.Especially children! wipe down all commonly touched objects like door knobs, faucet handles, light switches, toilet flushers etc.
People are STILL contagious even after 24 hours after their symptoms settle down so it is always important to wash your hands after the rest room (which you should do anyways!)
The key to staying Norwalk virus free is to keep sanitary.Wash your hands after using the bathroom...you could prevent other peoples misery as well as yours!!
Myths
It is ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE to get infected in any of the following ways:
1. Being “near” someone who has it, including co-workers or friends
2. Being on a plane with people who have it
3. Breathing the same air as someone who has it
4. Being in the same building as someone who has it
5. Walking past a pool of vomit on the floor, road or sidewalk
6. Through having sexual relations with an infected person
7. Through a cut in your skin
8. Through your rectum or genitalia (as in, on a toilet)
9. Kissing someone who is not yet showing symptoms (note: it may be possible to catch it from someone who has recently vomited by kissing them, as viral particles may be in their mouth from vomitus. But the virus is NOT transmitted through saliva)
10. Number 6, above, applies similarly to sharing cups or utensils with someone as well.
TIPS:Do not share any cups/plates/utensils with an infected person and be sure to wash in a bleach solution to prevent cross contamination with the rest of your family.
Good luck and stay healthy.:)

How can I prevent my baby from getting NOROVIRUS?
I seem to have contracted the Norovirus and have had terrible diarrhea for the past 3 days. I am a proud mommy to a 9 week old baby girl who is strictly breastfed. I have been pretty good about washing my hands and bleaching surfaces around the house. How can I prevent her from getting this virus if she requires such close attention? What do I do if she does get the virus?
Answer: one of the great things about a baby being breastfed is your body produces the healthy cells to fight a virus... so even if you have the virus, since your body is fighting it off, your baby is going to get that into her system, and most likely wont get the virus, the immunity that your body is creating transfers into your breastmilk!!.. now i would continue to be on the safe side and sanitize everything, wash clothes in hot water to kill germs, lysol can be sprayed across soft surfaces, so at night id spray a little on surfaces you touch, and maybe your sofa also. and wash your hands often!! especially before picking her up to feed her.. just in case she would try to put your finger in her mouth. i think you doing everything right though. God Bless.

THE FACTS The key to clean hands is simple: Wash thoroughly with soap and water. But once the faucet is off, do you reach for the paper towel or the air dryer? My brother has it.
Im a emetophobic so im terrified of being sick. I really do not want to catch it.
Has anyone managed to not catch Norovirus when someone in their house has it?
I need some peace of mind!
Answer: If you all practise good hygiene i.e., frequent hand washing and wash up dishes etc with very hot water there is no reason why you should catch it as it is not airborne, but transferred from faeces.
Bleach solution should be used to clean all surfaces that your brother contacts, especially toilet areas and door handles. He has to understand that he is contagious and must take all precautions to avoid bacterial transfer. It's not rocket science, but just needs some thought about possible routes of transfer.

How to disinfect clothes contaminated with a NOROVIRUS/ stomach virus?
The CDC website says that the Noroviruses can live on surfaces for up to a month in ideal conditions and the only way to disinfect the surfaces are with bleach.
If laundry has been contaminated with a Norovirus, how can I disinfect it? I cant use bleach on the clothes, so what should I do?
Answer: Washing the cloths with detergent, then drying it on "hot" or "high" will generally work.
Detergent will kill many microbes, and very few things can survive a run through a dryer on high.
What they probably mean is bleach is the only PROVEN way to disinfect. Lots of other thingsprobably work but haven't been tested. Also, we know sufficient heat works. (Heat is what they use in hospitals).
