When Is ASH WEDNESDAY 2012? - Date of ASH WEDNESDAY 2012
In the Roman Catholic Church, Ash wednesday is the first day of Lent, the season of preparation for the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. Find the date ...
What is the history and meaning of the ASH WEDNESDAY?
Can anyone share a brief historical view of the Ash wednesday ritual of having an ash cross put on forehead? Also what does this ash marking represent? :)
Love Light and Peace to you :)
Answer: Ash wednesday marks the onset of the Lent, the 40-day period of fasting and abstinence. It is also known as the 'Day of Ashes'. So called because on that day at church the faithful have their foreheads marked with ashes in the shape of a cross.
The name 'Day of Ashes' comes from "Dies Cinerum" in the Roman Missal and is found in the earliest existing copies of the Gregorian Sacramentary. The concept originated by the Roman Catholics somewhere in the 6th century. Though the exact origin of the day is not clear, the custom of marking the head with ashes on this Day is said to have originated during the papacy of Gregory the Great (590-604).
In the Old Testament ashes were found to have used for two purposes: as a sign of humility
and mortality; and as a sign of sorrow and repentance for sin. The Christian connotation for ashes in the liturgy of Ash wednesday has also been taken from this Old Testament biblical custom./
Receiving ashes on the head as a reminder of mortality and a sign of sorrow for sin was a practice of the Anglo-Saxon church in the 10th century. It was made universal throughout the Western church at the Synod of Benevento in 1091.
Originally the use of ashes to betoken penance was a matter of private devotion. Later it became part of the official rite for reconciling public penitents. In this context, ashes on the penitent served as a motive for fellow Christians to pray for the returning sinner and to feel sympathy for him. Still later, the use of ashes passed into its present rite of beginning the penitential season of Lent on Ash wednesday.

ASH WEDNESDAY?
Whats the story of Ash wednesday?
Why do you give up stuff for lent?
Answer: Ash wednesday is the first day of Lent. It is celebrated by Liturgical churches (Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, United Methodist, Presbyterian USA, and United Church of Christ). It is 40 days, but it doesn't include Sundays because those are celebration days. Sunday is a day of feasting, while Lent is a time of fasting. It prepares someone for the season of Easter. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or volunteering and giving of themselves for others. People sacrifice or give up things to remember that Christ gave the ultimate -- his life. The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan.
The ashes are given to each person in the sign of the cross on their forhead. They are a two fold reminder. We are human. We are mortal. From dust we came and dust we shall return. Also, ashes were used in the bible as a symbol that someone was in deep sorrow over their own sins. It is an outward symbol of an inward repentance of sins.
The last week of Lent is Holy Week. It starts with Palm Sunday (the day when we remember Christ coming back into Jerusalem where people laid palms on the road). Thursday is Maundy Thursday. Maundy comes from the Latin word that means Commandment because during the John scripture of the Last Supper Christ gave his disciples a new commandment (to love one another). Maundy Thursday is the day of the Last Supper. Good Friday is the day we remember the death of Christ. Easter Sunday ends Lent.

ASH WEDNESDAY?
could someone please tell what the purpose is of putting ashes on your forehead for Ash wednesday? why is it done, what is the meaning for it?
I would think though that once a person accepts Jesus Christ as thier personal savior by acknowledging that he died on the cross for our sins and then defeated satan by rising again, that there would not be a purpose for rituals such as ashes.
Answer: There is NO SCRIPTURAL BASIS FOR Ash wednesday!
First, let's take a look at this:
http://www.explorefaith.org/faq/ash_wed.html
First, we have this:
QUOTE
On Ash wednesday we come to church to kneel, to pray, and to ask God’s forgiveness, surrounded by other sinners.
Since WHEN is there only ONE day that we should do this?
Why do we need to come to church, to ask forgivness?
Why do we need a public didplay?
Isn't this EXACTLY what the Jewish leaders were doing here:
Matthew 23:5-12 (New International Version)
New International Version (NIV)
Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984 by International Bible Society
5"Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries[a] wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them 'Rabbi.'
8"But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. 9And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10Nor are you to be called 'teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ.[b] 11The greatest among you will be your servant. 12For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
Then we have this:
QUOTE
This, of course, is why Lent is a period of self-examination and penance. We need to stop and look at our lives—remember what we are made of, remember where we are going—and let go of all those things that don't really matter, all those things that get in the way of loving God, loving others, and being loved by God and by others.
And come to think of it, WHY do we ned a special season to do a spiritual self-examination of our self? This should be a DAILY process! For only THEN, will we who are Born Again. will truley be able to walk in the ways that Jeus WANT'S us to!
BOTTOM LINE:
There is NO SCRIPTURAL BASIS for a practice like this!
Does "being among other sinners save you?
No.
Does receiving the ashes on your forhead save you?
No.
Does observing NON-Scriptural "Holy Days" save you?
No.
Only Jesus saves you-Salvation is through Him + NOTHING ELSE!
Period!

Has anyone heard of eating pork on the Monday before ASH WEDNESDAY?
I just found out it is a Swedish tradition to eat pork on the Monday before Ash wednesday. Has anyone else heard of this? Any ideas on recipes? We just had a roast for Valentines day, so pork roast doesnt sound all that appealing.
Answer: Be sure to serve this dish with deviled eggs to carry the tradition. The citrus, honey and other ingredients follow tradition, too:
Tangy Honey Glazed Ham
1 (10 pound) fully-cooked, bone-in ham
1 1/4 cups packed dark brown sugar
1/3 cup pineapple juice
1/3 cup honey
1/3 large orange, juiced and zested
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Place ham in a roasting pan.
2. In a small saucepan, combine brown sugar, pineapple juice, honey, orange juice, orange zest, Dijon mustard, and ground cloves. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Set aside.
3. Bake ham in preheated oven uncovered for 2 hours. Remove ham from oven, and brush with glaze. Bake for an additional 30 to 45 minutes, brushing ham with glaze every 10 minutes.
Shrovetide
In Sweden, the Easter celebrations used to begin with the three days of Shrovetide, full of carnivals, games and revelry. One of the more popular activities was to playfully thrash each other with birch twigs on Shrove Tuesday. Another Shrovetide practice was to toboggan down steep slopes so that the flax would grow tall. People were also supposed to mark Shrove Tuesday by eating seven hearty meals. A 40-day fast then followed, with its own rules concerning food, such as a ban on eating meat or eggs.
http://www.sweden.se/templates/cs/CommonPage____11349.aspx
In the early days, when Sweden still was a Catholic country, people was supposed to fast for 40 days prior to Easter. This was preceded by a period (Shrovetide - fastlagen) when the people ate lots of rich food, to be able to go through with the fast.
The last day before fast was Shrove Tuesday (fettisdagen), and originally, this day was the only day of the year when people ate semlor. Until just a few years ago, most people ate semlor only on the four Tuesdays leading up to Shrove Tuesday, but nowadays, we eat them from the beginning of January until Easter...
What are semlor then? The name "semla" originates from the Latin word "simila", which means fine wheat flour. They are big cardamom-flavoured buns, divided into two (a smaller top and a large bottom) filled with whipped cream and almond paste. The traditional way is to eat them in a bowl of hot milk, others prefer to eat them as they are with a cup of coffee or tea.

Collops are slices of meat. The derivation of the term is uncertain. It appears to be related to the Swedish word kallops, rather than to the French word escalope.[1]
In Elizabethan times, "collops" came to refer specifically to slices of bacon. Shrove Monday, also known as Collop Monday, was traditionally the last day to cook and eat meat before Lent, when that was a period of fasting from meat. A traditional breakfast dish was collops of bacon topped with a fried egg.
Scotch Collops are a traditional Scottish dish. It can be created using either thin slices or minced meat of either beef, lamb or venison. This is combined with onion, salt, pepper, and suet, then stewed, baked or roasted with optional flavourings according to the meat used. It is traditionally served garnished with thin toast and mashed potato.
The methods used to create this dish in its various guises have direct parallels with the Middle Eastern treatment of meat in such dishes as koftas.

I am still working on converting to catholicism and tomorrow is Ash wednesday. I will be attending mass, and I know that they release ashes. I wasnt sure if the ashes are placed on the persons forehead. I am not allowed to accept communion, is it the same for the ashes?
Answer: Yes, any Christian may participate in Ash wednesday and receive the ashes.
The ashes are a sacramental, the Eucharist is a Sacrament. That's the difference. You can't receive the Eucharist until you are confirmed, but any sacramental is available to you right now. That includes the holy water in the fonts when you come in, a Rosary, icons, crucifixes, etc.

What Bible Scriptures To Read On ASH WEDNESDAY?
What scriptures are read on Ash wednesday? Where is Christ in scripture in relation to this time?
Answer: " What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. "
James 4;1-10

Have you ever had to place ashes on your own forehead during an ASH WEDNESDAY Mass?
I am Roman Catholic and today i went to to Ash wednesday mass and i was required to place ashes on my own head, also before doing so, the layman holding the bowl of ashes said "turn away from sin" instead of "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." Even since i can remember, the priest always placed ashes on your forehead and reminded us that we are dust and shall return to dust. I just wanted to know if other Catholics or Christians who observe Ash wednesday, have had this happen to them and if they find it normal.
Thanks!
Answer: I have. It's not a big deal. Some Parishes have too many people and some not enough. Priests can not anticipate when someone can find the time to come in for the ashes.
Be grateful you have a parish to get your ashes in, some people dont even have that.

What does the United Methodist Church require for ASH WEDNESDAY?
I know for lent that the Roman Catholics must fast on Ash wednesday and every Friday; no meats and only eat one full meal.
-Do Methodists require the same thing?
-Do any Catholics fast every day instead of just on Ash wednesday and every Friday?
-What are some good examples for lent?
Answer: "Do any Catholics fast every day instead of just on Ash wednesday and every Friday?"
Yes! Traditional Catholics fast EVERY DAY of Lent (except for Sundays), and we abstain from eating meat on Saturdays and Wednesdays of Lent. Abstention from eating meat on Friday is year round for traditional Catholics, not just for Lent.
It's also important to not forget the penitential and sacrificial nature of the Lenten season. We shouldn't just be focussing on fasting and abstention, but also almsgiving and repentance. This is a season of making ourselves ready for our risen Lord come Easter.

ASH WEDNESDAY?
Today is Ash wednesday, the begining of lent. Are we NOT suppose to eat meat today?
Answer: Yes.
We are supposed to fast and abstain from meat today.
The Catholic Church and many other Christians Churches follow the Biblical practice of Jesus Christ and the Jews in setting aside days where the entire Church fasts and prays as one in a attitude of constant renewal.
By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert and in spiritual preparation for the celebration of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
This season of penance is an intense moments of the Church's penitential practice and are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and charitable and missionary works.
With love in Christ.
