BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK
Everything you ever wanted to know about Big bend national park.
What type of firearm can I take to BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK?
I would like to take a firearm for animals/attackers on my future trip to Big bend national park. My first choice is my S&W 686 .357 w/ 4" Barrel then a .38special snub nose and if I could, a .44 magnum repeating rifle.
Whats the legality of this?
Answer: This comes directly from the www.nps.gov site, specifically citing Big bend national park.
"As of February 22, 2010, a new federal law allows people who can legally possess firearms under applicable federal, state, and local laws, to legally possess firearms in this park. It is the responsibility of visitors to understand and comply with all applicable state, local, and federal firearms laws before entering this park."
Keep in mind some facilities will be off limits if you have a firearm with you, but as stated, they should be marked. They also state the discharge of a firearm is still illegal in a National Park (NP), I don't know the laws on self defense in an NP, but it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
If you have the time, you can address very specific questions, such as self defense in written form (not e-mail), to the BATFE at:
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
Office of Public and Governmental Affairs
99 New York Avenue, NE, Room 5S 144
Washington, DC 20226 USA
Hope this helps, happy carrying, and long live the USA!

The depth of the canyon carved by the Rio grande is also unusual, being deeper than average. A large thrust fault creates the bend in the park's name of teh river

Does Anyone Know Why BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK Was Established?
I need to know fr geography thnx!
Answer: Alexis nothing definitive:
In the 1930s, many people who loved the Big Bend country saw that it was a land of unique contrast and beauty that was worth preserving for future generations.
In 1933, the Texas Legislature passed legislation to establish Texas Canyons State Park.
Later that year, the park was re-designated Big Bend State Park.
In 1935, the United States Congress passed legislation that would enable the acquisition of the land for a national park.
The State of Texas deeded the land that it had acquired to the Federal government of the United States, and on June 12, 1944, Big bend national park became a reality.
The park opened to visitors on July 1, 1944.http://www.big.bend.national-park.com/

What is there to do at BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK?
I just moved to Texas from Detroit. I would like to go camping at Big Bend sometime in the fall -- maybe late October. What type of activities should I plan while there? lIs there anything that we shouldnt miss? My friends and I will probably backpack in. I would love some advice from someone who has been there.
Answer: Its beautiful, and hiking is about all there really is.
I was there a few years ago, and hiking is in fact the one main thing to do. Photography is the next best option, if you're a camera buff. In the center of it all you will find the headquarters, and there are several trails leading out from there.
I can't really recommend which trail to take, because its a matter of preference. When you get to the headquarters they can provide you with all the information you should need, and then just pick what best suits you.
Hope you have a great time.....good luck.

How busy is BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK in March?
Specifically the early part of march...from the 4th to the 13th. I read on the NPS site that this was one of the busiest times for the park...but it also sounds like Big Bend isnt visited very often, so Im wondering if its really super crowded then (like the Grand Canyon) or if it is just slightly more populated then.
Thanks in advance!
Answer: It is never super crowded. Even at their bussiest time crowds are not a problem. March is a great time to visit because the temps are not too hot. If you plan to stay at the lodge inside the park then make your reservation now. The lodge is small and rooms fill up quickly.

if you had just two days to stay at BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK and were camping how would you spend them?
We are going on a driving trip of the big bend area. We plan on visiting a number of parks in that region and wanted to hit the Big bend national park. I have never been there and we only have about two days for that park. WHat would you do if you had this agenda and wanted to maximize the experience. We love hiking and photography.
Answer: Big Bend is BIG, so spending just 2 days there you see only the main tourist trap sites. My suggestion is to cancel the other destinations and make that your only. Take the time so you can do a bit of hiking and see the good stuff. Greg Aiello of livewell's motion program did a segment on the Big Bend with some great advice,
