I walked up Ben Nevis on Friday evening. It took 2 and 3/4 hours up, and 2 and 1/2 hours down. How many calories would I have probably burned to do this. It is 4406 feet high, is Britains highest mountain, and has some snow at the top. I started at the youth hostel at the bottom. As a comparison, how many calories do you burn when you run 4km at 10.5 kmh (23 minutes). Thanks.

For a charity walk, Im not getting into serious hiking, but planning on Snowdon and Ben Nevis this year. I dont currently have any hiking gear, what sort of stuff will i need. Im on a relativly small budget
Answer: Most physically healthy people can complete the ascent of either in good conditions, even children with responsible adults and old people. Nevertheless it is a tough walk, specially if not used to fell walking .Make sure you get local weather forecast and cloud level for the day.( local YHA) Importantly one should not pursue these walks alone, preferably with someone familiar with Landranger maps and compass( to avoid getting off safer routes, like the Pyg Track on Snowdon. Wandering off these in fog is so easy and fatal with precipitous drops , specially on Snowdon Be prepared for sudden changes in weather in these regions. Use good walking boots, a woolly hat as temperatures can plummet with wind chill and height. One third of body heat is lost though the head.Also hands must be warm. Have Anorak and showerproof over trousers. Rucksack with water, raisins, chocolate, fruit like banana which contains potassium for stamina. Spare jumper and socks as you will most certainly encounter very wet underfoot conditions. A whistle and torch with basic first aid kit is recommended and to be really kitted out a survival bag and or foil wrap could save your life if you do get stranded in fog or darkness.

Thinking of skiing in Nevis Range Scotland. Is the skiing there good? Is there usually plenty of snow? and when is best date to ski there?
Answer: The snow comes and goes fairly quickly. The skiing can be good when there is lots of snow, low winds, and good visibility. Best date depends on the weather, watch it and be prepared to go when the weather is good. The skiing anywhere depends on your ability. If you can ski most runs confidently, then you will find something worth skiing in Nevis Range when the weather is right. If you are a complete beginner, then there are some runs when the snow level is low enough. Now does not look like a great time, but in a month or two there will be periods, maybe even weeks when it is good enough.

What footwear do i need to climb ben NEVIS?

Im planning ben Nevis this weekend, and doing it on a budget. I am reasonably fit and do quite a bit of running, so i would judt like to know will my running shoes (silver shadows - army issue) be ok for the hike or will i need to invest to some walking boots?
Answer: Normally I would go for walking boots when going up a mountain, there is better ankle support especially for over the rough stuff than say walking shoes or trainers. However Ben Nevis has a track right to the top that is pretty much flat - not very much on it to twist an ankle on, and so normal trainers are suitable if the weather is good. In the rain I would go for boots for the waterproofing - if your feet get wet in the first hour then it can be a miserable day walking up and down, not to mention the blisters, If you are tight and on a real budget (walking boots can cost as little as £25 if you look), then a good ordnance survey map, compass and whistle and knowledge of how to use them is a better buy, plus a bag to carry your stuff in (but this might cost more than the boots all together!!) I am confused - you have army issue running shoes - are you in the army in which case don't they supply you with foot wear to walk in?

Has anyone climbed the more difficult route up Ben NEVIS?

I am going up Ben Nevis with some friends at the end of the month. It has been said that we should try the more difficult route. I have looked into this and it says it involves some scrambling etc, which I am fine with. Id like to get others opinions who have done this before I cast my vote, and the only people I know who have climbed it have done the tourist route. Opinions welcome, thanks!
Answer: I would advise against taking the "difficult" route outwith the months of June and July because of the potential weather conditions. Each autumn, you can guarantee at least three deaths on Scottish mountains by clowns who do not appreciate the change in weather conditions between sea level and summit. And every such clown puts in danger the volunteers who form the mountain rescue teams that have to get the clowns to safety. STICK TO THE TOURIST ROUTE IN AUGUST.

How hard is it to climb ben Nevis in mid july? Im relatively fit, in the sense of I take 2 mile jogs partially up hill 3 times a week. Its going walking, theyve estimated itll take 6-8 hours to reach the peak. We havent been told which face as of yet.
Answer: That depends on which side you climb. The North face is much harder (steeper) than the south face.

Answer: Well thought you have been winter climbing!!! Hope you are not climbing if you are asking this as you will not last long, no offence I come from this area and know what people can be like. October is the start of when it snow's this year we have been experiencing winter conditions at the best of times all year. It last snowed on the Ben in June and not really had a good summer, at the moment it feels like Autumn so October will be likely cold to freezing with climbing/walking you always prepare for evey eventuality regardless what you here/see on the weather report. You take thermals, extra food, torch, extra clothes, proper boots, water proofs, whistle etc etc You should not take the Ben for granted the weather can close in with no warning and just because it is clear on ground is not the same for the top. I can only imagine that this year we will have another harsh winter, not a problem its life, just a problem for the rescue services when people come up ill prepared.

What is the distance of the Ben NEVIS race?

I cant find the distance the trails are on Ben Nevis and these distances are needed for a school project. I need the distance to the top. Ive already read this from wikipedia, but thanks anyway.
Answer: G'day Sn1peronthe r00f, Thanks for your question. Ben Nevis (or Beinn Nibheis in Scottish Gaelic) is the highest mountain in the British Isles. It is in the Grampians range, situated in the west of Scotland, close to the town of Fort William, in Lochaber, Highland. It is one of 284 Munros (mountains in Scotland that reach an elevation of 3,000 feet - equivalent to 914.4 m - or more). It is 1344 metres high or 4409 metres. The first path up the Ben was constructed in 1883. It was designed by local headmaster, Colin Livingston, and cost £800. The bridle path was built to let ponies make deliveries to the newly constructed summit observatory. This relatively simple route to the summit, now known simply as the 'Ben Path', and commonly referred to as the 'tourist route', begins at the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre about one mile (1.6 km) from Fort William town centre, and a short distance up the mountain is joined by a path from the youth hostel. Another popular route is from Steal further up Glen Nevis, it is shorter and steeper, and tends to be used by climbers with a modicum of experience. The first few runs up the Ben were solos runs. Of these, the first recorded was in 1895. William Swan, a hairdresser/tobacconist from Fort William, ran from the old post office in 2 hours 41 minutes. In 1897, Spencer Acklom recorded a time of 2:55, and later William MacDonald from Leith improved the record to 2:27. Two months later Swan again took the record with a time of 2:20, and in 1896 MacDonald improved this to 2:18. The first competitive race was held in 1899. 10 competitors set off from the Lochiel Arms Hotel in Banavie. The winner was Hugh Kennedy, a gamekeeper at Tor Castle. The 1903 race was from Achintee and to the summit only. It was won in just over an hour by Ewen MacKenzie from Achintore, the observatory roadman. That year, there was another race, from the new Fort William post office, and MacKenzie lowered the record to 2:10. Hugh Kennedy was in second place. MacKenzie's record held for 34 years. The race now starts from Claggan Park, and the route is about 4 miles shorter than in the early years. The current record for men is 1 hour and 25 minutes, and 1 hour 43 minutes for women.
