EDITORIAL; Homeward Goes the Dust Bowl Balladeer
The news that Oklahoma is now ready to accept and celebrate Woody guthrie, the seminal American folk singer who died in 1967, as a native son with an exhibition and a study center for his archives is welcome if long overdue. The state resisted honoring him for decades, because of his leftist politics. I aint a Communist necessarily, Guthrie - Editorial asserts that Oklahomas decision to accept Woody guthrie as a native son and celebrate his work with an exhibition and a study center for his archives is long overdue. Why did WOODY GUTHRIE write This land is your land?
One of the questions on my history homework is,
"Woddy Guthrie wrote and preformed This land is your land. Explain Guthries intentions with this song"
HELP!
Answer: "This Land Is Your Land" is one of the United States' most famous folk songs. Its lyrics were written by Woody guthrie in 1940 based on an existing melody, in response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America", which Guthrie considered unrealistic and complacent. Tired of hearing Kate Smith sing it on the radio, he wrote a response originally called "God Blessed America for Me". Guthrie varied the lyrics over time, sometimes including more overtly political verses than appear in recordings or publications.

is there a connection between WOODY GUTHRIE and President Wilson?
Woody guthries full name is Woodrow Wilson Guthrie, and he was born in 1912. Pres. Wilson was elected in 1913. Woody was born in Oklahoma, and Pres. Wilson was from NJ... does Woodys name reference to the Pres-to-be? - odd since they are from different states...?
Answer: Famous folk artist Woody guthrie was named after Woodrow Wilson. His dad, Charles Guthrie, known as Charley, was an industrious businessman, owning at one time up to 30 plots of land in Okfuskee county. Charley was also actively involved in Oklahoma politics and was a Democratic candidate for office in the county. The young Guthrie would often accompany his father when Charley made stump speeches in the area.

When did WOODY GUTHRIE tell the truth?
My class is doing a report on American truth tellers, and I was given Woody guthrie. I have done research and I dont get when he was a truth teller.
Answer: Maybe he didn't.
The guy was a fellow-traveller if not an outright Commie, a bit slipshod in his sexual mores, and probably not above embellishing history to make a good song. If it's really a research paper and not political indoctrination, your teacher will be into a well-supported case that he WASN'T a truth teller, if that's what you see. The answer you're "supposed" to give is, "He wrote about the plight of the common people during the depression and the way the big corporations oppressed them yada yada." And there is some truth to that. But he was an artist and activist, not a journalist.
I assume you've read Guthrie's autobiographical writings and a wide selection of his song lyrics. If so, try:

How do you strum This Land Is Your Land- WOODY GUTHRIE on guitar?
I know the chords but I cant figure out how to strum this song at all...and there is nothing online that is straightforward. Can someone help me out?
Answer: Pluck the bass or root of each chord with the thumb followed by strumming up, down, up with your index finger. Woody guthrie used an alternating bass technique – meaning he constantly changed the bass note. Attempt this technique after becoming comfortable with the basic strum.
Here is a video demonstrating the basic strum.

WOODY GUTHRIE--This land is your land..Where can I find more information on this?
I am doing some research on Woody guthrie, I have searched the internet for stories about his songs, poetry etc. We are having to interpret some of his work. I did find some information about his illness, etc. Any suggestions?
Answer: Slightly built, with an extremely full and curly head of hair, Woody was a precocious and unconventional boy from the start. Always a keen observer of the world around him, the people, music and landscape he was exposed to made lasting impressions on him.
During his early years in Oklahoma, Woody experienced the first of a series of immensely tragic personal losses. With the accidental death of his older sister Clara, the family's financial ruin, and the institutionalization and eventual loss of his mother, Woody's family and home life was forever devastated.
Having lived through some of the most significant historic movements and events of the Twentieth-Century --the Great Depression, the Great Dust Storm, World War II, the social and the political upheavals resulting from Unionism, the Communist Party and the Cold War-- Woody absorbed it all to become a prolific writer whose songs, ballads, prose and poetry captured the plight of everyman.
Mistakenly diagnosed and treated for everything from alcoholism to schizophrenia, his symptoms kept worsening and his physical condition deteriorated. Picked up for “vagrancy” in New Jersey in 1954, he was admitted into the nearby Greystone Psychiatric Hospital, where he was finally diagnosed with Huntington’s Chorea, the incurable degenerative nerve disorder now known as Huntington’s Disease or HD.

Life in Okemah might have been comfortable, with cotton prices up and beef down, but for the fires. Fire was to dog Woody, boy and man. A kerosene lamp shattered - the OKEMAH LEDGER reported it as an accident, while folks in town whispered otherwise - and flames consumed his beloved older sister Clara, the one who called him "Woodblock," when the boy was just months shy of his seventh birthday.
There were other fires, unexplained. Woody was not yet 15 when his mother hurled a kerosene lamp at a dozing Charley, searing his chest from neck to navel. Members of Charley's Masonic Lodge arranged to send Nora to the state asylum in Norman.

Answer: On page 327 in the fifth printing (Feb. 1999) of Joe Klein's biography Woody guthrie: A Life, Mr. Klein quotes Woody as saying "the most important songs I've ever worked on" referring to his recording of songs highlighting the Sacco and Vanzetti case, two Boston labor organizers who were wrongfully convicted of robbery and murder and sentence to death.
The passage goes on to say that Woody was never satisfied with the end result.
