How might MAYA ANGELOU have been affected by the segregation laws?
Maya angelous memoie, I know why a Caged Bird Sings, takes place during atime in which segregation laws governed most of the South. so, how might her self-esteem habe been affected by those law...i find it hard to believe she is who she is today even when living through such a hard time.
Answer: Maya angelou was born Marguerite Ann Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 4, 1928. In 1931, when she was three years old, her parents divorced and she and her 4-year old brother, Bailey, were sent alone, by train, to live with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. While living with her grandmother, Angelou participated in a wide variety of dance classes including tap, jazz, foxtrot, and salsa.
After four years in Stamps, the children returned to their mother's care in California. At age eight, Angelou confessed that her mother's boyfriend, Mr. Freemen, had sexually abused her, and Angelou's uncles beat the man to death. Horrified by the outcome, she became mute, believing, as she has stated, that "the power of [her] words led to someone's death." She remained nearly mute for five years, at which point her mother sent the children to live with their grandmother once again. Angelou credits a close friend in Stamps, Mrs. Flowers, for helping her "re-find her voice."
She began to speak again at age 13 and returned to live with her family. She graduated 8th grade with honors at the Lafayette Country Training School. In 1940, while spending the summer with her father in the Los Angeles area, Angelou was assaulted by her father's live-in girlfriend, which led to her running away from home and spending a month as a resident of a junkyard that housed other homeless children. She finally called her mother and was sent a ticket back home to San Francisco, but her month of homelessness had a profound effect on her way of looking at the world. As she says in p. 254 of Caged Bird, "After a month my thinking processes had so changed that I was hardly recognizable to myself. The unquestioning acceptance of my peers had dislodged the familiar insecurity...After hunting down unbroken bottles and selling them with a white girl from Missouri, a Mexican girl from Los Angeles and a Black girl from Oklahoma, I was never again to sense myself so solidly outside the pale of the human race. The lack of criticism evidenced by our ad hoc community influenced me, and set a tone of tolerance in my life."
Angelou's first work of literature, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, is an autobiography that was published in 1969. Angelou's disruptive life inspired her to write this book. It reflects the essence of her struggle to the restrictions that were placed upon her in a hostile environment. Angelou wrote with a twist of lyrical imagery along with a touch of realism. The title of this book is taken from the poem "Sympathy" by the great black poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar.
She spent part of her young life in the South living with her paternal grandmother. It was there she encountered the prejudice of the Old South.

what is a good way to start off a thesis statement about MAYA ANGELOU as a person, writer, and her accomplishmen?
my topic for my research paper is Maya angelou. i chose to write about her as a person in general, her as a writer, and her accomplishments as an african american women.
Answer: Hmmm ..
You really need a thesis statement before anyone can help you begin. A thesis statement is something -an opinion, or unproven theory - that you will choose to defend using facts you have come across during your research.
It has to come from your brain. For example, it might be: "Maya angelou's writing was heavily influenced by her early memories of St. Louis." This is something that you believe to be true, but other people might disagree. In a thesis, your job is to convince the reader. Then the rest of the paper would be filled with references to St. Louis you find in her writing, and reasons why you think your statement is true.
However, I suspect from your question that you aren't really being asked to write a formal thesis - you are being asked to write a research paper that includes many different kinds of information about Maya angelou. Maybe your teacher is using the word 'thesis statement' but really means 'topic sentence'. Such a paper might begin, "Born in St. Louis in the 1920's, Maya angelou has made many contributions to the field of African-American literature." This will not include opinions at all. It will be organized pieces of information you have learned about Maya.
Which is the case?

I have to do a research paper on Maya angelou and I have to have a page on criticism from other authors or famous people and I have found nothing! Maybe Im searching all the wrong things, but I cant gather anything.
Answer: There is one place that I can send you, and that's the library. I'm sorry, but you're going to have to do it. You don't necessarily have to go delving through books and stuff; you can probably go onto a computer there and log on a scholarly database such as ebsco. Ask your teacher if your school library has ebsco or ask the librarian. If not, then I suggest the public library. If your school does have ebsco, you might be able to access it from home if they give you the ID and Password, which would be WONDERFUL!

Did MAYA ANGELOU have any big significance during the Civil Rights movement?
Im doing a project where Im discussing three different voices during the Civil Rights Movement. I chose Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Maya angelou. I felt confident with my choices, but now Im worried because Ive been doing research, and Im not sure if Maya angelou really had such an influence to the Civil Rights movement at all. Did she?
I need to know ASAP. Thank you.
Answer: Her name has never come up in any CR stuff I've ever heard about. She's relatively new to the scene. I was introduced to her through literature classes.
According to the Wikipedia article, she knew Martin Luther King, Jr, and did a little work with Civil Rights, but then moved to Ghana. So I wouldn't count her as a big name for the Civil Rights Movement. Certainly not on the scale of MLK Jr and Malcolm X.
Take a look at this site for others. I'd definitely include a female in your trio, just not Ms Angelou. :)

What symbolism is in My Arkansas by MAYA ANGELOU?
My Arkansas
By Maya angelou
There is deep brooding in Arkanas.
Old crimes like moss pend from popiar trees.
The sullen earth is too red for comfort.
Sunrise seems to hesitate and in that second loses its incandescent aims, and dusk no more shadows than noon.
The past is brighter yet.
Old hates and ante-bellum icce are rent but not discarded.
Today is yet to come in Arkansas.
It writhes. It writhes in awful waves of brooding.
Answer: Moss pending from poplar trees symbolizes the lynchings of the past. Red refers to the blood of the victims. The crimes of the past still haunt the present and the old hatreds have not yet disappeared. "Today is yet to come in Arkansas" is saying that Arkansas is stuck in the past because it is haunted by its crimes and because it hasn't resolved its racial tensions. Hope this helps.
