What was the opinion of the German immigrants concerning the TEMPERANCE Movement?
What was the opinion of the German immigrants concerning the Temperance Movement, that took place in America during the late 19th and early 20th century?
Thanks in advance for answering.
Answer: In Boston it was seen as a clash of religious values between the majority Boston abstinent 'puritan' protestants and the high liturgitist German Lutherans and 'papist' Catholics, who tolerate and encourage beer drinking.
High Lutheran German and Roman Catholic Irish immigrants to 19th century Boston incorporated beer halls and bars into their culture and social structure which began to flourish all over Puritan Boston. The 'Temperance movement' originated and led by Boston's patrician Puritans was seen by some as an attack on the German immigrant political social structure (and other high Liturgitists like Irish and Italian immigrants).
Bars and beerhalls were central to German social (and political) activity and the Temperance movement sought to close down all establishments of alcoholic consumption, which were also gathering places for political activism.

What is TEMPERANCE, as far as the Cardinal Virtue?
Is it abstinence? I already checked on Wikipedia and a number of other websites and none of them give me a definition that I can fully understand...Can someone give me an example of someone using Temperance in a situation?
Answer: Temperance helps you balance what you want and what you need. So, for example you could practice Temperance by only buying the new pair of shoes you actually need when you go shopping, instead of buying $300 worth of clothes in addition to that, So I guess in a way Temperance could be abstinence, if you abstain from doing things that you don't really need to do.

How did the Womens Christian TEMPERANCE Union and Frances Willard allow women to gain more political power an?
How did the Womens Christian Temperance Union and Frances Willard allow women to gain more political power and (eventually) suffrage in Chicago (and the rest of the country)?
Answer: The women's christian Temperence Union was many times larger than all the women's Suffrage groups put together. However, the supporters of Temperence eventually decided that getting the vote for women would be the quickest way to get Prohibtion passed, and so they threw their weight behind the women's suffrage campaign, which made a big difference to the cause. They became critical grassroots soldiers for the suffrage movement, organizing all those petition drives and referenda campaigns and state lobbying efforts that kept the effort going during the doldrums and gradually pushed it forward to success.
Frances Willard had a genius for building a mass movement by finding common ground for compromise. She initiated a policy called 'Do Everything" in which the members were encouraged to fight for reform in whatever way struck them as best. The national headquarters had dozens of deparments, dedicated to everything from world peace to public health, and one of the most active was the section devoted to woman suffrage. In many small towns, the WCTU was the centre of all feminine political activity. Everett Hughes, a chicago sociologist, remembered the WCTU gatherings his mother hosted, in which the women talked about "general sanitation and improving education, about the child labor laws."

The Temperance movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries was an organized effort to fight against the consumption of intoxicating liquors.
What does fortitude, prudence, TEMPERANCE, and justice mean by the 4 cardinal virtues.?
What does these words mean:
Prudence, Temperance, fortitude, and justice. It`s from the 4 cardinal virtues.
Answer: The cardinal virtues
1805
Four virtues play a pivotal role and accordingly are called "cardinal"; all the others are grouped around them. They are: prudence, justice, fortitude, and Temperance. "If anyone loves righteousness, [Wisdom's] labors are virtues; for she teaches Temperance and prudence, justice, and courage."64 These virtues are praised under other names in many passages of Scripture.
1806
Prudence is the virtue that disposes practical reason to discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it; "the prudent man looks where he is going."65 "Keep sane and sober for your prayers."66 Prudence is "right reason in action," writes St. Thomas Aquinas, following Aristotle.67 It is not to be confused with timidity or fear, nor with duplicity or dissimulation. It is called auriga virtutum (the charioteer of the virtues); it guides the other virtues by setting rule and measure. It is prudence that immediately guides the judgment of conscience. The prudent man determines and directs his conduct in accordance with this judgment. With the help of this virtue we apply moral principles to particular cases without error and overcome doubts about the good to achieve and the evil to avoid.
1807
Justice is the moral virtue that consists in the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neighbor. Justice toward God is called the "virtue of religion." Justice toward men disposes one to respect the rights of each and to establish in human relationships the harmony that promotes equity with regard to persons and to the common good. The just man, often mentioned in the Sacred Scriptures, is distinguished by habitual right thinking and the uprightness of his conduct toward his neighbor. "You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor."68 "Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven."69
1808
Fortitude is the moral virtue that ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of the good. It strengthens the resolve to resist temptations and to overcome obstacles in the moral life. The virtue of fortitude enables one to conquer fear, even fear of death, and to face trials and persecutions. It disposes one even to renounce and sacrifice his life in defense of a just cause. "The Lord is my strength and my song."70 "In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."71
1809
Temperance is the moral virtue that moderates the attraction of pleasures and provides balance in the use of created goods. It ensures the will's mastery over instincts and keeps desires within the limits of what is honorable. The temperate person directs the sensitive appetites toward what is good and maintains a healthy discretion: "Do not follow your inclination and strength, walking according to the desires of your heart."72 Temperance is often praised in the Old Testament: "Do not follow your base desires, but restrain your appetites."73 In the New Testament it is called "moderation" or "sobriety." We ought "to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world."74
To live well is nothing other than to love God with all one's heart, with all one's soul and with all one's efforts; from this it comes about that love is kept whole and uncorrupted (through Temperance). No misfortune can disturb it (and this is fortitude). It obeys only [God] (and this is justice), and is careful in discerning things, so as not to be surprised by deceit or trickery (and this is prudence).75

So other churches have things like stop smoking programs. So does your church have any Temperance programs in place? If so what are they? My moms church also holds vegetarian cooking classes.
Answer: I'm LDS and we do have addictions programmes. People from all faiths are helps and some people without any faith. Its anonymous and has helped many people. Also members obey what we call the word of wisdom, - no tea, coffee, alcohol, tobacco or harmful drugs. We avoid addictive substances.
