If ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA is not even American, why are students forced to use it?
When I want American information, I use American sources, not sources from a socialist country that hates us. My kids are in school and were told not to use Wikipedia (a liberal encyclopedia, but at least an American one), but Encyclopedia britannica. Encyclopedia britannica is from England, not America.
Could someone please explain this to me? Need any more proof that teachers are pro socialist?

Where can I find a recent critical (scholarly) review of ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA 1911 edition?
Im looking for a recent (past 40 years) critical review of the Encyclopedia britannica Eleventh Edition (1911). The more recent the better. The more scholarly the better. Looking for comments on its value and worth as a research source today and errors it contains. The most recent review I could fund was from the 1920s. Any help appreciated!
Answer: The Eleventh Edition is valued more for the number of well-known people who contributed, than for its factual content. It is generally acknowledged that one cannot rely wholly on it and should cross-reference facts. Also, it was compiled in the days of the "British Empire", and the prejudices of that time jump out of the pages, along with racial content.
The first wikipedia link lists several errors in the 1911 (Eleventh) edition. Also, if you scroll down to 'Wikipedia Content' you will find details of someone who has a copy and who is willing to discuss the content with anyone. He gives his contact as Britanicajo@hotmail.com.
If you scroll even further down, under 'EB1911 More Harm Than Good', you will find a less than glowing critique signed Stbalbach and dated 7th February 2005. (Recognise this?).
As to more recent scholarly reviews, I'm afraid my limited research capacity didn't come up with anything from this century. However, in the second wikipedia link given, if you scroll down to 'Notable Commentaries on the Eleventh Edition', you will find comments from such luminaries as Sir Kenneth Clark ("Another Part of the Wood" 1974); and Robert Collison ("Encyclopaedias: Their History Throughout the Ages" 1966). Apparently T.S.Eliot's poem "Soul" was written with the Eleventh Edition in mind!

How much money would 1899 ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA be worth today?
My family owns a set of encyclopedias from 1899 and would like to find out if they are worth anything.
Answer: It would be worth differing amounts to different consumers in different markets. There is no set price, as information on pricing is not readily available to anyone in the market of very old, rare second-hand books.
You have a little gem! It is worth less than the new editions of the Britannica to most consumers, but go to a specialty book shop, or rare books bookshop and they will reward you with a huge price (comparably encyclopaedias I've seen, around 1940's, has fetched a price of 320 USD). Shop around. The asymmetric information and immobilty of information in the second-hand book market means that different shops will almost always give different prices. You'll have to contact the manager though, so check when they are in the store.

How do I use the old book version of the ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA/Americana?
How do you use the old book (not online) version of the Encyclopedia britannica? When I used to go into a library there were two sets on the shelf. One was called (I think) Macropedia and the other Micropedia (does that sound right or have I confused them?)....I just used to look up things in both without ever really knowing what I was doing. How should I have - how should I - look up things in a library with it?
Answer: I think you already know how to look things up in the Encyclopedia. If you are unsure about what set to use then speak to a librarian when at the library.
The Macropedia uses pictures, graphs, articles, to explain the entries. I don't know about a "Micropedia" other than the online wikipedia challenger.
