According to DOONESBURY, Obama sank eight out of ten from downtown. In bowling, what is downtown?
Answer: it was basketball - not bowling.
Indeed he did. GBT and Newsweek's Jonathan Alter were chatting with Sen. Obama in a hotel lobby in Berlin about the widely-seen video of the candidate sinking a three-pointer in front of a gym full of troops. Obama explained that in fact he'd gone on to sink seven more during two games of Horse. He was justly proud of his performance, and GBT got the clear sense that he wouldn't mind if the full story got out -- hence Rick's big break, as "Jon" leaked him the hot item for his fledgling blog.

DOONESBURY question? When did Mark Slaymaker come out as gay and what happened to his girlfriend Nicole?
I used to read Doonesbury pretty reguarly but I stopped paying attention for about 20 years. So when did Mark Slaymaker come out as gay? Was it part of a story or did it just happen. What happened to nichole his sorta girlfriend? Also is the Kim that Mike Doonesbury is married to the last orphan out of saigon? If so shes like 20 yrs younger then Mike
Answer: That happened shortly after Trudeau killed off the strip's only gay character, Andy, in 1990. Mark had a dream visit from Andy in which he discovered he too was gay.
From Wikipedia:
Mark was portrayed as heterosexual in the '70s, though without much in the way of actual relationships. When he came out to an ex-girlfriend, she reveals that she was always suspicious. After this, his orientation ceases to be an issue for several years.
As for Kim, she is a Jewish-raised Vietnamese orphan (the "last orphan out of Vietnam"), geek and Mike's second wife. And yeah, the huge age gap between them has been played for laughs many times in the strip, Mike being more of a baby boomer and Kim being the stereotypical Gen Y type.

Is the following DOONESBURY cartoon considered political, and what does it mean?
http://www.Doonesbury.com/
Referring to the cartoon on August 11th, 2011. I really need someone to explain what it means, and if it is considered political or not. Thanks in advance!
Answer: It's actually quite political. It criticizes American foreign policy, in particular its continued support for Arab dictators.
The slouched passenger in the limousine is a deposed Arab dictator (the "The Jews did this to me" line was the give-away --- Antisemitism is prevalent in the Arab world due to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict).
The blond-haired passenger in the limousine is presumably an FBI secret agent assigned to help that ex-dictator. What the FBI agent is basically implying is that the Federal government's already agreed to let the Arab ex-dictator stay in the US permanently.
The very last box implies that the dictators come to America bringing their prejudices with them.
Naturally, since antisemitism is very frowned upon in American society, the FBI agent says the dictator's going to have to keep quiet about that in order to quietly blend into American society.

Why is DOONESBURY placed on the editorial page in newspapers? Could it be because there is some truth in it?
I read this cartoon because it says so much.
Answer: Most newspapers consider Doonesbury more an editorial statement than a cartoon. More like a political cartoon so they choose to run it in other sections of the newspapers. In ours, they've chosen to put in beneath the celebrity news in the Daily Entertainment section. Go figure.

What do you think of DOONESBURYs take on situational science today (Sun. 1/14/07)?
This is why Doonesbury is the first thing I turn to in the Sunday paper, and why Doonesbury is part of My Yahoo page. Trudeau has a way of nailing a subject.
In case you missed it:
http://news.yahoo.com/comics/uclickcomics/20070114/cx_db_uc/db20070114
Paul H: Agreed. But an even more important target is the "teach the controversy" strategy. You take a subject in which there is near unanimity in the science community. You say there is a "controversy". If they respond, you say "see, its controversial!" If they dont respond, you say "its a conspiracy, therefore its controversial!" But the overall goal is to get students to throw up their hands and say "this is too confusing!" The result ... a nation of scientific illiterates who are now much more pliable to accept statements with no evidence as long as it complies with preconceptions (like "there are WMDs in Iraq" or "Saddam participated in 9/11" or "global warming does not exist" ... i.e. this isnt just quaint disagreement ... this gets people killed.)
chocolahoma: Your examples are not equiv. It was never true that "scientists agreed" the earth was entering an Ice Age, or a plane couldnt break the sound barrier, or space travel was impossible. In these cases, there was general *disagreement* among scientists. (And while your point is more true for geocentrism, at that time "science" itself was in its infancy and *directly* influenced by church doctrine ... which only bolsters the reasons for keeping them separate).
Yes, many issues in science *start* as a debate, but eventually converge on a growing and eventually overwhelming consensus ... as is evolution and all examples mentioned by Trudeau.
It is good and appropriate to question the consensus. But you wage this debate in universities and scientific journals in front of real scientists who know the issues and how to evaluate evidence. You DONT wage this debate school boards or in front of 6th-Grade students ... unless your goal is not to educate, but to confuse.
(Sorry typo.) You DONT wage this debate *in* school boards or in front of 6th-Grade students ... unless your goal is not to educate, but to confuse.
... And that is *precisely* Trudeaus point.
Answer: I love it!!! Now I understand... you shouldn't confuse people with the facts if they have already made up their minds! LOL!!! GREAT!!!!! LMAO!!!!!!!
