2011 LAW SCHOOL RANKINGS - Law firm marketing, legal technology ...
This year’s Law school rankings are out, and once again, folks are madder than heck. What do Law school rankings really mean?
in LAW SCHOOL RANKINGS, what does tier 4 mean???
Answer: US News only has four tiers -- so a fourth tier school is among the bottom group.
If you look at the top tier schools, over 90% of the graduates pass the Bar exam on the first try. For the fourth tier schools, it is closer to 50%.
Top tier students are recruited by the top law firms. Fourth tier students are generally not recruited.

Gaming the College Rankings
Any love-hate relationship must have its share of pain, so the academic world, in its obsession with college rankings, is suitably dismayed by news that an elite college, Claremont McKenna, fudged its numbers in an apparent bid to climb the charts. Dismayed, but not quite surprised. In fact, several colleges in recent years have been caught gaming - Academic world is dismayed, but not quite surprised, that several colleges have been caught fudging their numbers in apparent bid to climb the charts of college rankings; colleges gamed the system--in particular, the US News & World Report rankings--by twisting the meanings of rules, cherry-picking data or lying. How do you determine which school is a tier two law school?
I was looking at the Law school rankings in the recent U.S. news rankings, and it was unclear to me where the 2nd tier started. It had a listing of the top 100, then it had tier 3 and tier 4. I am assuming that the tier two group is somewhere in the top 100. If this is the case, where does tier 2 start?
Also, when I looked at the law schools at the 100 mark, several showed rankings of tier 1 in the summary overview...
Answer: To law students and prospective law students, Tier 2 is all schools ranked 50 to 100.
However, US News does not officially have a Tier 2 for law schools, so all schools from 1-100 are listed by them as Tier 1. The tiers then skip straight to Tier 3.

Choosing a Law School thats best for Intellectual Property.?
Hi Im planning on becoming a patent attorney.
i went onto the us news rankings website and was wondering if it was better to choose a school that is ranked higher in on their list for schools that are best for intellectual property versus the conventional Law school rankings. For example, George Washington University is number 3 on their list for intellectual property however it is ranked 28 as a law school. Would it be better to attend a school that is better in terms of intellectual property or a school that is ranked higher overall.
Answer: It depends.
First you have to realize that until you get into lawschool, you are not sure what kind of law you want to practice. I know you think you have a pretty good idea, and you may be right, but most people change their mind in law school. This is so because you find out how big the field of law is, and you also find out the reality of the practice. A lot can change in the first two years of law school.
Having said that, the practice of law is regional. If you want to practice in a particular region, you should think about attending school there because you will have the most resources for getting your first law job. This isn't an absolute, but I promise you it would be easier to go to school near where you want to work.. I didn't, and it was a tough climb.
As far as school ranking/discipline ranking. It isn't that big of a deal, really. It certainly isn't as important as location. Of course if you are given the opportunity of a 10 ranked school and a tier 3, the 10 ranked is the easy choice.

NEWS ANALYSIS; With Release of Teacher Data, Setback for Union Turns Into a Rallying Cry
In the days leading up to the release of ratings for thousands of New York City public-school teachers on Friday, hundreds of e-mails poured into the in-box of Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers. Others prodded Mr. Mulgrew to stand up against Mayor - News analysis; United Federation of Teachers president Michael Mulgrew, who fought for a year to block the release of ratings for thousands of New York City public school teachers, may be able to turn a legal defeat into a political victory if he can galvanize support for his position; he has taken a combative tone with Mayor Bloomberg over the ratings, but he must walk a fine line or risk state education aid to the city, which is tied to performance evaluations. After I graduate from the Hass School of Business, do employers look at your rankings in your business school?
I plan on getting into the Haas School of Business and looking into Finance. Getting into the school is ONE thing and staying in the school is ANOTHER thing. But I was wondering if employers look at your rankings in your business school. I know that law school, its ALL about rankings. So most likely the top 5 people in the law school will get the best offers whereas the bottom 50 wont. I was just wondering if it goes for the same at business school. Im interested in Finance, investment banking. Thanks!
Answer: Not at all. Fortunately, business school is focused on teamwork and collaboration (as is the business world), so class ranking usually plays no roll in the business school nor for companies recruiting from the business school such as investment banks.
The one thing you should focus on is your GMAT score. That will be something you want to put on your resume if it's strong enough. This often serves as a proxy for GPA and/or class rank. Plus, it's standardized across schools. Some investment banks are known to ask about GMAT scores during an interview.
My advice would be to study hard for the GMAT because it almost gives you GPA before you enter business school (plus it may earn you scholarship money which is even more valuable these days).
Good luck!

Differences in LAW SCHOOL RANKINGS?
what is the difference between tier 3 adn tier 4. ANd has tier 2 been eliminated?
Answer: People still acknowledge the tiers. Top 50 is 1st tier. Next 50 is 2nd tier and so on.
3rd tier is higher than 4th, but both are bad so it's not like you get any real prestige by being in 3rd instead of 4th.
Realistically, it's first tier or nothing. Altho, 2nd tier people can say they're almost 1st tier. Better than nothing.

How hard is it to get in to University of Pennsylvania Law School?
I live in PA, not sure if that matters, but I want to Study Law after college, and wanted to know what my chances are getting into University of Pennsylvania Law School, since they are ranked pretty high in Law school rankings.
I get good grades, As; (90-95), 3.8 gpa. Im a good student, do my work, have good attendance, active in the community... etc.
Answer: It doesn't matter what your grades are now, if you're in high school. All that matters when applying to law school is your undergraduate activities/GPA/etc., and your LSAT (mostly your GPA and LSAT.)
To get in, your college GPA should be no lower than a 3.4 (but that is on the very, very low end), and your LSAT should be in the range of 165-168 (25/75 percentile)

Could I get into law school?
I received a "D" Grade in one of my classes (in the filed of my study) in college. I was going through a difficult semester due to personal reasons. I completed my B.A. from a top, prestigious college. My GPA is decent.
Could I still be accepted to Stanford, or NYU, or a top law school?
Could I be accepted to any law school? And how important are Law school rankings?
THANKS for your information =)
gpa: 2.93
I have not taken the LSAT yet, and I plan on studying really hard to get the highest score I can get.
Answer: I am a retired attorney and was accepted by five law schools, including one in the top ten from which I graduated.
In undergraduate school I had a grade worse than a D in political science due to illness and a conflict with the instructor. I retook the course from a different instructor for an A grade. My undergraduate school was not prestigious at all.
You can be accepted by several law schools if your LSAT is high enough.
Acceptance at Stanford is so difficult that some people with all A grades do not get accepted. NYU is slightly easier.
However, with a 2.93 GPA you probably need to look at "third or fourth tier" law schools, which are those ranked below the top 100. Some of them, such as Golden Gate University in San Francisco, are very good. Two close relatives went there, graduated, passed the bar and have had very successful legal careers.
You will need LSAT scores in the top 50%, at least, to be admitted to law school with your GPA as competition becomes tougher every year. Get some private coaching for this test.
Law school rankings are only important if you go to one of the top ten and then they are only important if you are on the top law review (competitive student-produced legal journal). Graduating from a top ten law school did not give me any advantage in my career as a lawyer since I was not on a law review. However, I had a very satisfactory career in any event. Most lawyers do, so long as they enjoy practicing law and find a specialty which they like and in which they can do well.
Apply to several law schools of differing degrees of difficulty of admission, including a very easy one as insurance. Go to the best one that admits you (as graduates of the higher ranking ones usually have higher success rates on the bar exam the first time they can take it), work as hard as you can to be on the best law review that you can, but don't worry if you don't make law review at all.
There's a place in the law for every lawyer and most lawyers like the place that they find. They often find it in places where they never thought they'd look.
May I politely suggest that you check your writing more carefully. You have one typo and one grammar error in the body of your question. I point this out to you as the only way to write with the perfection required of law students and lawyers is to write perfectly all the time.
The Law opens many doors. Best of luck.

Which law school should I attend? Chapman Law or South Texas College of Law?
I live in Southern California and Ive been accepted to South Texas College of Law. I think Id really enjoy going there because they seem like a good school with a long reputation and one of the best mock trial temas in the nation!
Im currently on the waitlist for Chapman Law, which is about 12 miles away from my house. Apparently the new Law school rankings came out and theyve moved up to Teir 3 (South Texas is Teir 4). I guess Chapman is a good school considering that its still veryyy new. I guess deep down inside, I dont want to go to Chapman because I want to move out of the house. (Im Persian and if I just left home to move 10 miles away....well, lets just say its kinda looked down upon in our culture).
Anyways, pleeeeease tell me what to do! If I get into Chapman, should I go there and stay home? The benefit could be that my future employers will be in the area and know the school. OR should I just stick with Texas? Or another possible school? HELP!
I REALLYYYYYY WANT TO MOVE OUT OF THE HOUSE! and I cant do that if I go to Chapman! :o\ BUt South Texas is a really good school too!
Answer: The answer largely depends on whether you want to come back to Southern California after graduation.
If you do, you should go to Chapman. It is VERY difficult to convince employers that you are going to stay at their firms long term (instead of quitting after 6 months) unless if you are geographically tied to the region. And since it takes a typical firm 3 years to recover its associate training costs, they will be very reluctant to hire someone who chooses to go to an out of state school (unless if you graduate from a top national program). That being said, if you go to Texas and decide to come back to Southern Cal after graduation, you can try saying that you are tied to the region because your family is here, but you should be prepared to answer tough geographical questions during your interviews because your interviewers will be very skeptical.
Ok, for now let's assume you are coming back to California. Another reason why you should go to Chapman is its bar passage rate, which I believe is 72%. This pass rate is very good considering that California has the most difficult bar exam in the United States (historically, the average pass rate is a little bit over 50%). So if you go to Chapman, chances are that you will pass the bar if you study hard. On the other hand, more likely than not, a student who attends an out of state school will fail the California bar exam because different jurisdictions have different laws/rules. In other words, a school in Texas might not offer classes that you need to take in order to get a good grasp of the subjects that are tested on the Cal bar. And be careful about statements such as "Bar/Bri will prepare you for the Cal bar even if you go to an out of state school." While this is true for some candidates, learning new California specific subjects "for the first time" two months before the bar exam is definitely NOT a good idea. If you are going to commit a huge sum of money and 3 years of your life to get your J.D., I am sure you will want to pass the bar exam down the road, no?
Furthermore, I think Chapman's reputation is very good in Orange County. While it's a new school, I heard they have at least four professors who have clerked for the U.S. Supreme Court. I am not saying that these people can teach (I have no idea), but this number is certainly impressive. And believe me for now, in the law circle, reputation is everything.
Finally, please remember, this is your education that we're talking about here, and it has the potential to shape your life/career. While some from your culture might look down upon your choice to stay local, you should not base your decision on what other people think. It's YOUR life. Try not to let others tell you what you should or should not do because you are the one that will be most affected by your choice. By the same token, what I am saying here is only a suggestion, and you should not base your decision solely on what you read here.
I hope this response is useful to you. Good luck!
P.S. Some in the legal circle are speculating that Chapman has the potential to move into Tier 2. While this might not happen in the near future, it's certainly possible and you should give this possibility some consideration.
