I heard a major sun solar flare is expected by 2011 and there could be a global electricity grid wipeout.?
Is there any truth to this? Has anyone else heard this? I saw it on a documentary on TV. There could be a blackout that lasts as long as months up to 2 years with no electricity, computer blackouts shutting out major airports, supermarkets etc. It will also apparently effect sewage pumping stations. Many things will stop. Can anyone shed any light on this solar flare from the Sun theory?
Answer: The History Channel, right?
The sun reaches "solar maximum" ever 11 years or so. Sunspot and solar flare activity increases in the time leading up to this, and decreases afterwards in an 11-year cycle. The next maximum is 2012, but flares can occur any time; they're just more likely in the couple of years either side of that.
Powerful solar flares (which are rare) can cause communications difficulties and problems with power grids. Nothing that doesn't occur anytime there's a major thunderstorm, just more widespread.

Answer: you need to shoot slightly towards the sun but not into it (or you'll get a silhouette). the even easier way to get lens flare is to do it in photoshop - there is a selection in filters that gives you perfect lens flare.

Answer: The sunlight has to hit the bottom part of your lens. The sun just has to be in front of you. don't ever point directly it at it.

How are SUN FLARE predictions done ?
I would like to learn how to track sunspots and would like to get into flare predictions.
How are they done?
Answer: Good question. I've heard in the early 1960s that you cannot predict a sun spot although they do come in cycles. According to NASA, they were able to accurately predict the cycles to prevent the Apolo mission astronauts in the 1970s from getting a fatal dose of radiation (since there space suits and capsules were minimal protection) when traveling through the magnetosphere. I understand that you can get a good dose on the moon as well.
Hopefully, NASA can explain how they are able to predict these events.

Could a SUN FLARE scorch the Earth?
They seem to be getting bigger and bigger, and frankly, Im scared.
Why are they getting bigger, anyways? If Mercury goes bye bye, will it be time to panic? Would it be even possible for the sun to expend eneough energy for a 93 million mile long flare? Idont know about the rest of you, but if Mercury desintegrates, Im saying my prayers.
Answer: An immense explosion on the sun could technically send a flare so big that it would penetrate the earth's magnetic field and possibly cause immense damage to the surface and the life living upon it. However, this is unlikely, as the sun is currently in its most stable state as a star, and will stay this way for another 300 million years; furthermore the earth's magnetic field is very strong and defends the surface from space radiation all the time. So I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Answer: Easily most people would want it to be a zombie apocalypse cuz most of em' think they could survive it and then they can travel to any store, rich person's house, etc and do what ever they want, but little do they know that the zombie virus spreads in the air like malaria or a poisonous gas, so you could become a zombie just by breathing!
I would choose for super nova to vaporize earth!

Why cant I get the SUN FLARE effect with a DSLR stock lens?
Right now i have a Canon EF-S 18-55mm 3.5-5.8 lens. Is it because the aperture is too small? If thats the reason, whats a good quality lens with a nice, big aperture size that is under $200 (possibly with zoom)

This kind of picture is only possible during a solar eclipse because the sunlight is much brighter than the flare. Only with the moon covering the sunlight let you see the flares.

This effect you will have if the sun-light gets reflected between the lenses of the objective. The reflections themself can be seen as little spots along the line of the ray. So to get this effect you need an objective with enough lenses to get some reflections and the sun must be in a position where the light is falling into the objective from the side. With digital cameras the lens flare effect can look quite differently.

The best result I had so far was with SLRs (with normal film, not digital), but my money never has been enough to buy a digital SLR to check if you get the same with them.

How much damage would a super solar flare from the sun do to the planet?
Putting aside all the movies such as "Knowing" ect, in real life would it wipe out the planet? How often do they happen?
Answer: Our atmosphere and magnetic field does a very good job of protecting us from solar flares. We had the largest ever recorded solar flare in 2003. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3242353.stm
Do you remember the news reports about it? No? Then it can't have caused much of a problem, can it?
Talk of super solar flares wiping out the planet is rather like expecting a super hurricane in the Caribbean which will completely flatten everything on the island of Jamaica (for example) killing everyone there. These things just don't happen.

Answer: The Sun throws off solar flares all the time. The vast majority of people don't ever notice. No, one that could do the damage shown in 'Knowing' is not going to happen. We've had 4.5 billion years of solar flares without that happening. I'm glad the movie made you more interested in astronomy - the universe is really cool! In fact, it's so cool I don't see why movie makers feel the need to make up more stuff.
