How did WILT CHAMBERLAIN influence the game of basketball?
So far I have found that Wilt chamberlain
-influenced rules(free throws, 3 in the key, goaltending, etc..)
- also helped to improve the NBAs defensive strategy due to his collosal scoring numbers(am I correct on this?)
If anyone has any other examples of how Wilt chamberlain influenced the game of basketball I would highly appreciate it ..
Thanks in advance,
Alex
Answer: he influenced the opposition to always find ways for him to lose.

I need at least 3 block quotes ABOUT Wilt chamberlain. Make sure its something about him and not something he said. Also please tell me who said it, in what book, article, newspaper, etc. and what year they said it. Thank You
Answer: "The first time I guarded Wilt, I stood behind him and he was so wide that I couldn't see the rest of the game. Then I saw him dunk a ball so hard that it hit the court and bounced straight up back through the rim again."
~ Bob Ferry, Tall Tales (by Terry Pluto) p. 326
"Wilt is playing better than I used to -- passing off, coming out to set up screens, picking up guys outside, and sacrificing himself for team play."
~ Bill Russell, Great Moments in Pro Basketball, (by Sam Goldaper) p. 24
"I still remember the time when one of our strongest men, Gene Conley, decided to fight Chamberlain for the ball. He grabbed it and hung on and Chamberlain just lifted him and ball right up towards the rim."
~ Bill Russell Go up For Glory, p.126.
"People lose sight of the fact that Wilt was a 440 champion, a guy with great coordination. He also was so strong that the double-teaming defenses used today wouldn't bother him."
~ Wayne Embry (GM for the Cleveland Cavaliers), Tall Tales (by Terry Pluto) p. 327
"I said, 'Wilt isn't such a tough guy. I can guard him.' He backed me down and dunked the ball. And I was so far under the basket, and he dunked it so hard, that the ball came through the net and hit me in the forehead twice! Bang!
So I said, 'You know, I think he is that great.'
~ Spencer Haywood, The NBA at 50 p.169

In 1968, Sports Helped Temper A Year of Rage and Upheaval
Culture wars. Political discord. A divisive presidential campaign. One of the reassuring aspects of history is we can often find an era, even a year, when the times were as bad or even worse than they are now. One such year was 1968. In April, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Two months later, Senator Robert F. Kennedy was - Box Seats column by author Tim Wendel notes that the traumatic year of 1968 has been analyzed and written about from all sorts of angles--political, cultural, even musical--but what has often been overlooked in that crucible of years was the pivotal role sports played; how athletes, in baseball and other sports, responded to the upheaval in 1968 was often human and something fans could find solace in. Is WILT CHAMBERLAIN a better overall player than Michael Jordan? What are your thoughts?
I know Michael Jordan has all those rings, and I think that does mean something, but look at the stats.
Chamberlain: 30.1 ppg, 22.9 rpg, 4.4 apg
MJ: 30.1 ppg, 5.3 apg, 6.2 rpg, 2.35 spg
Note: They did not count steals back in Chamberlains time, but that shouldnt really matter.
Answer: I say wilt because the competition was alot better then it was when jordan played.

How were WILT CHAMBERLAIN and Bill Russell able to average so many rebounds per game?
I mean, Wilt averaged 27 rebounds per game AS A ROOKIE! And both averaged over 20 rebounds per game for their careers, how come players today, who lead the league only average 12 to 15 rebounds per game?
Answer: The real reason was because the game was different back then. Look at the stats. The game was much faster back then. Every possession was a fast break, there were 100-120 shot attempts per game. So more shot attempts means more rebounds.
It wasn't just a matter of those two guys averaging 20+ rebounds a game, there were at least 5 or 6 who averaged 15+ those two where just the best. See for yourself:

Did Michael Jordan dominate his peers in his era as much as WILT CHAMBERLAIN?
Judgeing the best player of all time is usually reserved to how well they played compared to their peers during their era. Michael Jordan didnt really dominate talent wise. There were many other players like Barkley, Pippen, Ewing, Kareem, Magic, Bird who did just as well as Michael Jordan. Wilt chamberlain is really the only one who completely destroyed his peers. What do you think?

WILT CHAMBERLAIN?
Has Wilt chamberlain 100 point record ever been broken?
Answer: No, never been broken
Kobe's 81 points was not close...90 or 95 points would be 'close'...
as Kobe will tell you...Kobe has no idea where an extra 19 points would have come from in that game.
And no, Lebron's not going to come close to the record either...unless he's playing in his driveway with his kids.
The answer below didn't list a couple of college games:
* Frank Selvy is the only person to score 100 points in an NCAA Division I game, when he scored exactly 100 for Furman against Newberry College in a 149-95 rout on February 13th, 1954. (41-66 FG, 18-22 FT)
(Selvy's best known game in the NBA is probably Game 7 of the 1962 NBA Finals in which Selvy's Lakers faced a four point deficit at the hands of Boston Celtics in the final minute of the game's fourth quarter. Selvy then proceeded to secure two crucial rebounds and score two baskets to tie the game at 100. However, he lost his chance for the ultimate heroic moment as he missed an 8-foot jump shot right before the buzzer that would have secured the championship for the Lakers had it gone in. The miss sent the game to overtime, where the Celtics prevailed in this, the first of six NBA Finals match-ups between Boston and Los Angeles over the course of just eight seasons.)
* Clarence "Bevo" Francis has the NCAA all-division record of 113 points, for Rio Grande Community College against Hillsdale College, exactly 11 days before Selvy's mark. Francis also holds the NAIA mark of 116 points for Rio against Ashland College on January 19th, 1963, but this is not recognized by the NCAA because it did not come against a four-year institution.

How did a player like WILT CHAMBERLAIN do so well?
I was just looking at some NBA stats and it shocks me how beastly Wilt the Stilt was. 50 ppg, 25 rpg a year, that is incredible. How was he able to do it? I mean right now leaders are 28 and 15 - how was Wilt able to own, and how come no one cant repeat those numbers this century?
Answer: First off, the 24-sec. shotclock was already in place in 1954. The 3 second rule was introduced in 1936. Illegal defense was already in place since 1947. Defensive goaltending was instituted way back during Mikan's college days (pre-1950's). Offensive goaltending was instituted during Russell's senior year in college (1956?).
Wilt debuted in the NBA in 1959. He played with all rules in effect.
Second, the 60's era in which Wilt played, is a more physical era. There were no sissy flagrant or handcheck fouls during that time. Refs allow those physical tactics go unpunished because the owners and NBA management believe that blood and violence is what brings people to basketball games back then. Superstar players like Wilt receive no favorable treatment from refs and in fact, refs often side with the opposing team against Wilt because they feel that he is simply too dominating. The NBA enacted rules to stop Wilt somehow.
Third, the average height of NBA centers back in Wilt's day was 6'10. Wilt towered a mere two inches over the opposition. Darral Imhoff, the center whom he dropped the 100points is 6'10. Bill Russell, the second best rebounder in league history and the center on which he grabbed a record setting 55 rebounds (but the Celtics won the game by 3 points) is also 6'10. You dont see Yao Ming endangering these records even though he has a 4 inch advantage over your average centers today. Besides, Walter Dukes is 7'1", Swede Halbrook is 7'3" Mel Counts 7'0". How come none of this 60's players put up the same numbers as Wilt did? Height is not the reason for Wilt's domination w/c leads us to number 4 . . .
Fourth, the main reason as to why Wilt dominated the competition, black and white, short and tall, is because he is a superb physical specimen even with the substandard 60's training methods and nutrition of his time. In fact, Sports Illustrated in 1986 describe him as the finest athletic construction made of flesh and blood. Wilt was a shotput thrower, a champion high jumper, a track star and a triple jumper. He could benchpress 550lbs back in college. The man is IIRC also in the volleyball hall of fame and he only began seriously playing this game when he was past 36. The New Jersey Nets back in the 80's were still actively wooing him back out of retirement when Wilt was already going 50 (In an 80's Lakers exhibition scrimmages, Wilt at center held a Magic Johnson-lead team scoreless).
Wilt's listed 275lbs weight is his un-updated college weight. During his prime andhis later years in the NBA, he admitted that this weight was closer to 290-300lbs.
The only one who could give him any problem was this former track star and Olympic caliber high jumper named Bill Russell (In the late 70's when he was in his mid to late forties and with the Seattle Supersonics, Bill had one on one skirmishes with the Sonics players. He transformed each one into a virtual volleyball game, smacking down any would be attacks to the basket).
Fifth, if Shaq or any of today's pampered modern players have the misfortune of playing in the 60's with its outdated training methods and nutrition, theyre physical skills and abilities would be impaired to the point that they would do no better if not only slightly better, than your average 60's player. The modern players will not dominate the 60's competition who are using the same 60's training methods and nutrition as they are.
Particularly, Shaq. I doubt that 60's training methods and nutrition could hold Shaq's body fat in check like modern ones could. Anyway, lets compare Shaq and Wilt. Shaquille at 34 years old is in a physically deteriorating state. Wilt meanwhile at the same age, is still happily blocking Kareem's skyhooks, grabbing a career LOW of 18 rebs.(!),and shooting at a ridiculous percentage (iirc, it was 65%, the next year it was 72%). Wilt in his prime was dropping 50 points and 25rebs. Half of those points came from his mid range fadeaway shot . . . . what surprise that Wilt has a perimeter game? Wilt has a more varied shot selection than Shaq and also in his prime, Wilt was dunking free throws from the charity stripe with hardly any running start.

Why is Michael Jordan considered a better player than WILT CHAMBERLAIN?
Jordan is always said to be the best but Chamberlain scored 100 points in one game and 55 rebounds in another. He averaged 40 to 50 points a season which has never been done. There many more stuff so why is Jordan considered better?
Answer: - Jordan was better at FT
- Jordan can jump higher
- Jordan got more assists
- Jordan can do better 3's....i know they didn't have 3's back then but still
- Wilt didn't have to face that many good ppl
- Jordan won more championships
- Jordan played longer

How is Michael Jordan better than WILT CHAMBERLAIN?
I dont have much of an opinion on this, as I havent seen either of them play, but the stats indicate the Wilt chamberlain is significantly better. In one season he averaged 50 PPG. He scored 100 points in one game. I dont understand how Michael Jordan is considered the greatest of all time.
Answer: Wilt was a 7 footer whos only competition was the 6'9 Bill Russell. The rest of his competition were 6'7 White Centers who couldn't move very well at all. Was Wilt good? yes. But he wasn't good enough to win many championships even though he was the biggest and strongest player in the league when he played. MJ on the other hand simply outplayed every individual he ever faced and won 6 championships with him leading the way...But since oyu like to look at stats you can check out their career PPG (points per game) and see that MJ's ppg is higher then Wilts.
