African Americans: when youre talking to white people about sports, do you find that they often bring up Larry bird and Rocky Marciano? Do you get the sense that theyre trying to prove that white people can be just as good as black people in sports that they dont usually excel in? Do they do this out of a sense of inferiority, and are they trying to prove themselves? Is it even normal to root for your own color, as Muhammad Ali said?
Answer: For the pure sports enthusiasts ability transcends racial barriers for most people. Some sports are less polarizing than others obviously and proof is in the putting. Still I find most White sports fans can not deny an athletes greatest. I don't know of any White people who are serious sport fans that would deny Michael Jordan as the greatest Basketball player ever. I don't know of any White people who didn't like or at least respect Walter Payton. I mentioned these two because they transcended race in their appeal and popularity. Now days boxing has lost much of it's popularity among Black and White sports fans. MMA is the wave of the future. This is where the White combat sport audience has gone. It has gained some popularity among the Black sport community as well. Black people are more into American Football and Basketball. Again White people seem more inclined to recognize talent. I consider myself the same way. I have praised and enjoyed the achievements of White athletes for their skill as well. I feel the older I get I'm more of a fan of good play within the sport rather than having my focus on one particular team or even one player. .

How much do you think the world of the NBA would have changed if LARRY BIRD was a Laker & Magic was a Celtic?

Picture its 1979, and the Lakers decided to draft who they thought would be the next Jerry West, that being Larry bird and the Celtics drafted Magic: What do you think would have happened? How much would the world in basketball changed? Would those guys have more or less titles? Would they have met more in the finals? Maybe met less? Id love to read some opinions from 1980s basketball buffs everywhere.
Answer: Its hard to say what would have happened because the rosters would have been very different. Key players on both rosters would have been other places draft positions would have been different. With Larry bird playing the 3 spot the Lakers would have never drafted James Worthy, and would have probably drafted Fat Lever to fill the point guard spot. Worthy would have fell to the Clippers and Dominique Wilkins probably ends up in Chicago, never gets traded to the Hawks and Chicago never drafts Jordan in 84 so he falls to pick #7 (Dallas, Washington and Philly needed big guys) ends up in San Antonio (who now won't be in position to draft David Robinson #1 in 87) and Charles Barkley goes to Dallas. Since Leon Wood would still be on the board John Stockton probably never ends up in Utah. With Tiny Archibald running point in Boston, Magic Johnson most likely plays the 3/4 spots which means that you don't draft Mchale in 80 and most likely end up with Andrew Tony. Since Tony is a young dynamic 1/2 guard, Dennis Johnson probably never comes over from the Suns in 83-84 (Now the Suns don't draft Kevin Johnson in 87, he Reggie Miller, Reggie Lewis or Scottie Pippen could have ended up with Mike Jordan in San Antonio which changes the NBA until this day because they never draft Tim Duncan) and maybe you don't draft Danny Aigne in 81. The Lenny Bias situation does not happen in 86. The whole landscape of the NBA changes if those L.A. bulids a team around Bird and Boston builds a team around Magic. Come on just look at the transactions in the 08' draft, we got rid of the "monkey" on our back (Jermaine O'Neal's 44M$ contract), also of Ike Diogu (Larry bird's "gem" of the Warriors deal) and brought it a group of proven rookies (Brandon Rush, Roy Hibbert) and proven players (T.J. We need to get a PF now (and knowing Larry bird, he is desperately trying to get Darrell Arthur, yes the guy that has been traded 2 times already, I know he tried to trade Daniels for him (to the Grizzlies) but he failed, lets see how far Bird goes to get a PF in FA or via trade. Jim O'Brien is a great coach and a great person off-court I met him in a restaurant in downtown Indianapolis and he has a great heart. P.S - remember that with J.O. gone along with his 44 million dollar contract we open up cap-space big time. Next year when Rasho's contract expires, we can pursue a "Outstanding" FA.

Does anyone remember the LARRY BIRD commercial for the Boys & Girls Club?

My mother has told me that Larry bird did a commercial for the Boys & Girls Club in the late 80s. Apparently I was in it, but she lost her copy of the tape long ago. Ive googled this but can find no reference to this commercial. Does anyone remember seeing this commercial? Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I could purchase a copy of it?

Larry bird once pretended to shoot over a defenders head, and he held out the ball on the back side of his head. When the player, thinking that Bird had shot the ball, turned around, Bird then pulled the ball back and had an uncontested shot, which he made. Who was that player that was embarrassed?
