PSYCHOSIS?
Can anyone tell me about Psychosis? How and why it manifests, and its treatment? Is there a term for a short burst of Psychosis (potentially reccurring again at a later date) in which the person loses total control for only a few hours, or a day?
Answer: Psychosis is basically losing touch with reality. You may be describing a brief psychotic episode although more likely, since it is so short lived, drug induced Psychosis. Psychosis is commonly associated with schizophrenia, but can occur as a reaction to stress, drug use, depression, bipolar mania, personality disorders etc.

Colleges Winter Break Finally Ends
The NBC comedy Community has finally come to the end of its gap semester. The - NBC sitcom Community, which was shelved by the network midway through its third season, is returning to the air; network decided to give the show, and its fans, another chance after episodes began appearing on Hulu, gaining new viewers and reinforcing Communitys role as one of the first shows of the so-called post-television era. How would you truthfully describe PSYCHOSIS?
Does Psychosis derive or originate from a mind of pure rationalism? The definition of Psychosis described by multiple websites seem to be contradictory, claiming Psychosis to be "a loss of contact with reality", whereas other sites have said it to be "an extreme state of consciousness," As you can see by comparing them, these are completely two different meanings.
Answer: In most cases of Psychosis there is hallucination and the people who suffer from it are also often depressed. Extreme emotional stress can be the cause for Psychosis in some people. They have usually very irrational thoughts and lose touch with reality during their Psychosis, a psychotic phase can last only a short while or in some cases it can be full blown Psychosis for a year or more..
My best friend's sister had pre-natal depression and Psychosis when she was pregnant. She had to be put on medication and also developed OCD and acted irrational in her entire behaviour. She got better but at the end of last year she had another Psychosis and most likely she will have to be on medication for the rest of her life.
Some specialists have a different opinion and believe there are 2 different kinds of Psychosis, as you said.. .that people with religious mania or unexplicable ''out of space experiences, they are said to be in an extremely painful state of consciousness.. and that this is a different kind of Psychosis, where they experience everything in a state of extreme conciousness but more as a nightmare and a horrible emotional pain..'

How do you differentiate between PSYCHOSIS or emotional breakdown?
I had an emotional breakdown and the psychiatrists think I was in a Psychosis???
How do you define it?
I wasnt having any hallucinations, voices, weird thoughts during the time.
(From the definition in wikipedia of a psychotic episode)
I definitely was not disconnected from reality.
The worst part is that they are forcing me to take pills.
I guess it cannot do any long term damage. Can it?
Answer: I totally agree with you. Psychosis would mean that you are at the point of loosing your mind or driving completely nuts. Emotional breakdown would be like a time of depression that would take a while for the person to come out of. They should not force you to take pills. You sound fine. You even researched what Psychosis was. A psychotic person would not even do that. The pills they will give you will stop you from being depressed if you are or in this case I think they might be giving you anti-psychotic which I think it would be ridiculous. Go and see another psychiatrist or a psychologist better so you can get other points of view before taking pills. The effects you get from those pills during the first week can be really bad, and the withdrawals are even worse.

What could happen if professionals were to let PSYCHOSIS run its course?
Ive had several psychotic episodes. The first two each lasted just two weeks. Since then Ive been put on atypical antipsychotics. I suspect that they have worsened my underlying condition, which is believed to be an oversensitivity to dopamine. Could letting Psychosis run its course amount to exposure therapy?
Projects like Soteria put the afflicted in a kind, attentive environment.
I dont suggest anything whereby an afflicted person could harm someone - more like a place like Soteria where people care.
Answer: Psychotic episodes are very serious mental disturbances. The oversensitivity to dopamine that you are speaking of is called "Schizophrenia". Unfortunately, your best chances of living a normal, healthy, and productive life revolve around strict adherence to your medication regimen.
It is important for you to realize that psychotic episodes can be very dangerous for both yourself and those around you. Many individuals experiencing psychotic symptoms often feel threatened and may lash out in violent ways in order to "protect themselves". Letting these episodes play out on their own often results in devastating consequences, such as assault on loved ones and self-mutilation. I suggest you work closely with your psychiatrist to assure your safety and mental well being.
Good luck in everything. I hope you are able to tackle this disease with a positive attitude.

PSYCHOSIS?
If a person wasnt born bipolar or scizophrenik, and jsut went under a stress attack from isolating themselves, how can they prevent relapsing again? When my mother died i went into a crazy psychotic state and it hink it was a comibination of the death and a result of me isolating myself for so long from society. Then i went through 3 more months after 2m onths of Psychosis doing lab test, and the only thing that healed my twitching in my head was accupuncture. Its been a long road,6 months and probabaly 2 more weeks to go.How can I prevent from relapsing? because i want to go back to my life i had for good....
Answer: Therapy and medication should set you on the road to recovery. I assume you have a psychiatrist if you have been diagnosed with Psychosis ... so talk to him/her about how you effectively manage your condition. Therapy can help you overcome the moderate stress you went through and will hopefully allow you to come to terms with the death of your mother. I really feel for you and know what it's like to be in such a bad state. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

What do you think of the study that suggests marijuana causes PSYCHOSIS?
It has also been linked to depression and paranoia. The study along with the head of an institute that deals with the link between drug abuse and mental illness suggest that marijuana alters the brain chemistry of people and may make them vulnerable to Psychosis. This is for chronics.
Answer: If you read the most recent study, you will realize that it was a study of other studies. The author is a paid consultant for a pharmaceutical company. Big Pharma does not want marijuana to be legalized. If you've ever studied statistics, you will realize that given any set of mathematical data, one can reach the conclusion one desires by simply manipulating that data to reach the desired outcome.
Such is the case with this study. Another term is "junk science." About the only real conclusion they can come to is that about 40% of those with Psychosis smoke marijuana. Instead, they've turned it around and concluded that there is a 40% likelihood that smoking causes Psychosis.
"The researchers said they couldn't prove that marijuana use itself increases the risk of Psychosis, a category of several disorders with schizophrenia being the most commonly known."
"They looked for psychotic illnesses as well as cognitive disorders including delusions and hallucinations, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, neuroses and suicidal tendencies."
"They found that people who used marijuana had roughly a 40 percent higher chance of developing a psychotic disorder later in life. The overall risk remains very low."
"Scientists cannot rule out that pre-existing conditions could have led to both marijuana use and later psychoses"
"Several authors reported being paid to attend drug company-sponsored meetings related to marijuana, and one received consulting fees from companies that make antipsychotic medications."

what is the difference between PSYCHOSIS and schizophrenia and are they related?
I have been trying to read up on these mental disorders, however I am still confused. Psychosis involves hallucinations and hearing things. Schizophrenia also involves these symptoms, yet I have heard that a person can have Psychosis while being schizophrenic. I want to know the differences between then and if they are related in any way.
Answer: Psychosis is a break from reality that can include hallucinations, delusions, etc. Psychosis is a "symptom" of schizophrenia. It is also a symptom of Bipolar and other mental illnesses.
Think of fever and flu. Flu(Schizophrenia) is the disease and fever (Psychosis) is a symptom, yet it can also be a symptom of other disorders as well.

Whats the difference between PSYCHOSIS and schizophrenia?
If your a Psychosis sufferer and you keep having relapses does that mean you are schizophrenic?
Answer: Psychosis is a general term for a mental abnormality, which may involve a loss of reality within the patient. Patients may experience hallucinations, or delusional beliefs.
Schizophrenia, however, is a specific illness. However, it is very complex, which has hindered the diagnosis & treatment processes for many years. There are many varieties of schizophrenia, such as catatonic (which causes disruption in movement - patients may find themselves "locked" in strange physical positions for hours on end, or make unusual facial expressions & limb movements) and disorganised.
Patients with schizophrenia may show symptoms of Psychosis - such as hallucinations etc. However it is their other symptoms - depending on which sub-type they may fall into - that cause them to be diagnosed otherwise.
It is entirely possible to relapse, regardless of what mental abnormality you may suffer from. If, in this sense, you suffer from Psychosis at some point - then suffer it again, with no other symptoms of any other illness, then it is likely that you have suffered an unfortunate relapse into Psychosis. Not all patients with schizophrenia suffer relapses, so it's not right to assume one is suffering from the illness if they relapse.
Hope this helped.

How is Post Partum PSYCHOSIS different from Post Partum?
A friend of mine suffered from PP.Psychosis many years ago. She told me that it is more serious than just post partum. Is there anyone that can address this subject, and if there is indeed a difference?
Answer: there is a huge cifference.PP depression means the mother gets depressed in the months after giving birth. they lose interest in life, dont want to do things they normally enjoy, and dont want to be around people amoung other symptoms of depression.
PP Psychosis means that the mother loses touch with reality in the months after giving birth. they can hallucinate, hear voices, and just lose touch with the real world. this is much more serious than depression. both are very serious conditions and need to be treated before they cause any damage to the mother or makes her do something that injures someone.

What is the difference between PSYCHOSIS as a diagnosis and schizophrenia?
I have paranoid schizophrenia diagnosed but my friend, who shows very similar symptoms to me, has been diagnosed with Psychosis and has been told its not schizophrenia.
What is the difference?
Answer: Schizophrenia and Psychosis - What's the Difference?
It is valuable to understand the difference between Psychosis and schizophreia. Psychosis is a general term used to describe psychotic symptoms. Schizophrenia is a kind of Psychosis. Several different brain disorders can lead to psychotic symptoms, including lesions in the brain resulting from head traumas, strokes, tumors, infections or the use of illegal drugs. If a serious depression goes untreated for a long time, psychotic symptoms may develop. These examples demonstrate that not all Psychosis is schizophrenia. If is for this reason that doctors may take quite some time (6 months or more) to diagnose someone, because while the symptoms of schizophrenia are quite obvious - the fact that the symptoms are not being caused by some other brain disorder is frequently not obvious.
