Do Rangers get any money back from talking to Yu DARVISH?
The Rangers paid $55 million to talk with Yu Darvish about signing him. Do they get any of that back now that theyve signed him? How does that work? Did they just pay that money and thats it?
Answer: No. But they didn't pay the posting fee until AFTER they signed Darvish.
The MLB team offers a posting fee. The highest offer wins the rights to attemp to sign the player. If the player is signed, THEN the fee is paid to the Japanese team.
So, once the Rangers signed Darvish (6/$60M), then they pay the $51.7M to the Nippon Ham Fighters.
There was another team who had high offer on another posting, but they never signed the player, so the MLB team pays nothing.

Answer: No and no. The Nationals are already over paying for one underproducing outfielder: Jayson Werth. They certainly don't need another albatross around their neck.
As for Darvish, he's a project. If he's signed, he'd likely have to spend a season or two in the minors as a starter or in short relief in the pros, see Aroldis Chapman, Kei Igawa. And when taking into accunt his posting price and his eventual contract, he's going to cost $100 million. He's not worth anything near that.
If you doubt Jordan Zimmerman can be a legit No. 2 starter, just wait and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised how good he is.

Why did Japan use Yu DARVISH at the 9th inning of Japans win over USA sunday?
I just thought this was wierd, 5 run lead in the 9th I would not use my star pitcher which could start on monday against korea. I also thought it was a bit wierd how they took Dice-K off after just 4 innings of good work. Do you think they will use Darvish against korea as a relief in case Iwakuma fails?
Answer: For the championship game, they are going to start Iwakuma. I also thought it was a little weird that they would put in Yu Darvish, when it was almost clear that Japan would win, and also with the fact that the next day is the championship game, which is itself more important. As the other answerer says, I also think this was for exposure.
I do not think it was weird at all how they took Dice-K off after 4 good innings, like you say. He threw the ball 98 times, and he was clearly showing some signs of fatigue, such as his arm position, if you looked closely. I think the Japanese management just wanted fresh arms.

Is Yu DARVISH arguably the best pitcher in the world right now?
I know most people would say that Japanese baseball is not as talented as American baseball but I still think Yu Darvish, only 24, could be really great in the US.

Answer: He may be. It's hard to compare American vs. Japanese players.
I don't buy the conventional wisdom that American baseball is unilaterallly better than Japanese baseaball. I think there's more variation between the best and worst players in the Japanese leagues, but I think it's very close in talent level to MLB. Admittedly, though, it is hard to take a league seriously if it includes teams named the "Softbank Hawks" and the "Ham Fighters."
But Darvish has dominated that league. He's led the league in WHIPs for 4 years and ERA for the last two. And the man is only 24. He has a great future ahead of him.
BQ: I'm sure some MLB team will throw $70 million or so at him in the next few years. Maybe not the Red Sox, though, since they've been burned by Japanese pitchers in the past.

I am optimistic. I trust our scouts, who have been watching Yu since his debut in 2004. And he has played in the World Baseball Classic. I am still a little bit doubtful that he is worth that much though. The contract itself is cheaper than CJs, but they also spent an extra 50mil just to talk to the guy. What do Yu think?
Answer: Japanese baseball is somewhere between AAA caliber and the majors. I'm guessing he will do well but certainly not as dominate as he was in Japan.

I cant wait for Darvish to head to the Majors, even if he doesnt pitch for my guys. Hes phenomenal to watch, and by the time he matures enough (basically the time he becomes a free agent) I think hell be one of the best pitchers in the Major Leagues. Who will land him and how good will be?

It happens with extensions to avoid arbitration and free agency at times but usually it the player pushing for more guaranteed years.
Answer: I can understand why hes doing it, he probably feels they're trying to "low ball" him, so he takes a shorter term, has a couple of good years and then is a free agent again to go for the bigger bucks. If he signs the long term deal, he may be leaving allot of money on the table.
Young players do this, and also agree to arbitration to get a handle on just how much they're worth, if you go to arbitration and you win, that changes how you proceed forward for a new long term deal.

Answer: It is going to be exciting no doubt to watch the Angels and the Rangers this year. If Darvish works out and wins 15-20 you will see the Rangers in the world series. Don't be surprised if the Angels make it though. Now that they have pujols they are stacked offensively and their pitching staff is great. The Rangers also have a great offense and if Darvish works out their pitching staff will be good. It is really a toss up between the two teams. Whoever has less injuries will probably end up making it to the World Series...to face the Mets of course.
