Whisper of The Wild
Setting off in the predawn gloaming of central Alaska, we were the sounds of swishing snow pants, crunching boots and cold puffs of breath. As sunrise gradually lightened the late November sky, we took visible shape: a single-file parade on a narrow white trail traveling west, deeper into Denali National Park and Preserve. It was three degrees and - Kim Tingley article describes the work of Davyd Betchkal, the physcial-science technician of Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska, who has been trying to record a months worth of natural sound in the park, which is part of the burgeoning field of soundscape ecology. Early Spring Sets Much of U.S. Awash in Color And Pollen Dust
ATLANTA -- Spring, with its promise of flip-flops and daffodils, can have a dark side. Insects usually not seen for a month or two - Early spring weather breaks 4,412 high-temperature records nationwide in a single week, bringing delight alongside a host of unseasonal problems; heat has brought with it record pollen levels in the South, dusting cars and frustrating the allergic, as insect populations expand rapidly across the country. Im having trouble viewing National weather service in Upton,NY radar in motion. I select to have it in motion and my browser closes. Why is it doing this? Its just that severe storms are going to be moving through my area and thats the best radar.
Answer: older versions of java run-time don't work with the recent NWS loops - so if you haven't upgraded java for some time - now is the time. Java 6 works fine. Of course, the problem may not be java but might be that your browser is outdated and/or corrupt and/or incompatible..

I heard the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE named tropical storm hanna after hannah montana cus she died?
i heard the National weather service named the new tropical storm or hurricane after miley cyrus/HANNAh montana because she just died in a car accident. is this true?
Answer: No, of course not, if she would have died they would have called it Miley, not Hanna, plus Hannah Montana has an 'h' at the end. Don't you know that hurricanes and tropical storms are named alphabeticly as they occur, using only one name with 'a', one with 'b', and so on, and when they go all the way thru 'z' they start all over using the same names.

Suggestion of a good long range weather forecast site other then the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE?
the National weather service long range forecast suks, they are NEVER right!
Answer: I have used http://weather.unisys.com/ for several years now and switch between the medium range GFSx/MRF forecast model which goes out to 10 days and the nested grid model, the NAM model. Both are found under Forecasts on the lhs of the page. However if you are working with these numerical models and do not like them, there is the ECMWF, European model. But I use these models regularly with quite good success and if you are a meteorologist and are not finding these models to be quite excellent today I really don't know what to say. Perhaps you are a layman and using text forecasts that are not quite taylored to your specific needs and are therefore encountering discrepancies. Bottom line - I can't really address your question because I don't know your background and degree of competence with these more sophisticated numerical products on line today.

Are freeze warnings issued by the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE in the Northern US?
I live in North Central Florida. In the winter, when the temperature drops below freezing, the National weather service issues a "Freeze Warning". The warning is similar to a Severe Weather Warning or a Hurricane Warning. It shows up on the bottom of the Weather Channel and local TV Stations. Because freezing temperatures are much more common in the Northern US, I am curious if a Freeze Warning is issued every single time it freezes there.
Answer: Freeze warnings in the northern states are issued during the growing season (after most freezes are past) and often for first freeze in the fall. After winter weather sets in, freezing temperatures are expected most nights and warnings are not issued.

STRATEGIES; Gas Price Disparity Seems Here to Stay
THE price of gasoline is rising, but the nation isnt sharing the pain equally. The average price of a gallon of regular was $3.76 a gallon on Friday -- up 8 percent in the last month -- a tabulation that masks significant regional disparities, said Avery Ash, manager of federal relations for the AAA. A gallon of regular was only $3.33 in Colorado, - Jeff Sommer Strategies column observes that, although global energy markets establish the national trend for oil and gasoline prices, many factors are much more local--including the proximity of refineries to crude oil sources; contends in the United States, a combination of infrastructure constraints and legal impediments makes it very likely that regional price disparities will widen in coming weeks. Answer: NWS does hire at least a few geologists, and it's parent organization, NOAA, would hire geologists as well. Many such jobs would be working in hydrology or in climate change.
Here's a current NOAA job advertisement for a hydrologist, where a degree in geology appears to qualify:

Are there any plans for the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE meteorologists to start providing weather briefings again?
When I first started to learn how to fly, I was to be able to call the local weather office and talk to a forecaster and get an official and detailed weather briefing. That was a great service for pilots. Maybe this is just wishful thinking but are there any chance of that happening again in the future?
Answer: I will have to agree. I don't see it happening since that responsibility is providing more money for the FAA. It is not a lot. but the surplus cash is hard to find for some federal agency. But you do know that you may not be able to get a official pilot weather briefing, the federal law will allow any pilot to call the local NWS for a second opinion after you get an official FAA first. Because the FAA are not train to do extended weather outlooks.. That that responsibility still falls on the NWS. And base on your recent question on route forecast, by law, you can call the NWS for a route forecast.

Does the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE fly hurricane hunter planes into the eye of a hurricane?
I know the Air Force does it but how about the National weather service? Sources?
Answer: The National Hurricane Center (part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/NOAA, but separate from the National weather service) has access to three planes for collecting data on hurricane location, intensity, and structure. Two WP-3 Orions and one Gulf Stream IV jet (did you know they are named after Muppets?) are flown into storms within range of the US coast. These planes are also used for other environmental/weather missions, but during hurricane season they are pretty busy with handling just the hurricanes. I think they may have another P-3 Orion on the way, which would be great!
You can read about the Hurricane Hunters, both the Air Force Reserve Squadron and NOAA's operations, at the link below.

I would love to work for the National weather service, but I do not know what the job generally pays, and is it about the same salary in every city? (i.e. Pittsburgh, Chicago, Denver, Seattle) Can anyone help me?
Answer: You can see the federal pay scale at OPM's home page at;
http://www.opm.gov/flsa/oca/09tables/html/RUS.asp
Entry level positions are normally GS-05 or GS-07 step 1 level. Most senior forecasters working for the government after 20 to 30 years of service are normally GS-13 step 6 to 10 level. Some forecasters do make the GS-14 or even GS-15 but not too many. This should give you some idea.

Where can I get a weather station that sends data to the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE?
I heard there were weather stations that recorded weather conditions and sent the data to the National weather service. It occurrs to me they would be a great gift.
Answer: There are several that have this capability. That is they are automated sensors hooked to a computer that sends the data over the internet. The problem the weather service has is that many of these home stations are not correctly sited and maintained so that the information is not of the quality that they need although they sometimes may provide useful information particularly in severe weather situations. There is so much data out there that it has become very difficult for an office to monitor all the information that has become available so they tend to limit the amount of data that they actually look at during severe weather events. These units are not cheap and between the station and dedicated computer often cost several thousand dollars to set up.
The two companies that I most often hear about are Oregon Scientific and Davis Instruments and these can be found at the following sites.
http://www.oregonscientificstore.com/?gclid=CKKxwcCqj6YCFUla2godhUTeXw
http://www.davisnet.com/weather/products/index.asp
They are both good companies and their better stations are good and reliable.

Why did the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE quit stop putting out route weather forecasts for pilots?
I attended an aviation weather conference back in 1997 and a top manager from NOAA told the participants that the TWEB forecast was considered by the aviation community as one of the most in important aviation forecast that the National weather service produced for the aviation community. Why did they stop putting out this forecast?
Answer: I would also like to add that I think after years of trying, the NWS likely was not able to develop a good software that would produce simple usable route forecasts that would have been helpful and user friendly for the forecasters by tapping into the gridded forecast data put out by the forecaster and the current conditions from the available database . I think if they were able to make a software, in my opinion, the route forecast would still be around today just like the terminal forecast are still around today.
