WELL; Personal Best: Road to Race Recovery Is Littered With Variables
I ran my first marathon this month. It went well, and despite my fears, I had fun. I met my goals - qualified for the Boston marathon with nearly half an hour to spare and came in second in my age group. But the big surprise was my coachs advice the next day. It will take four weeks to fully recover, he told me. That seemed like an awfully long - Gina Kolata Personal Best column holds that there is a dearth of rigorous research on recovery after strenuous exercise, such as running a marathon, whereas unsubstantiated folk wisdom abounds. How long does it take to run the BOSTON MARATHON?
A friend of mine claims to have run the Boston marathon, from start to finish, in less than four hours. Three hours and forty three minutes, to be exact. Is this even possible? Thats something like... I dont even know, I cant even calculate how many miles per minute that is. He also alleges to have been injured during mile 15 and I think thats where his story really falls apart.
Answer: Yes, it is possible. The world record for the men's marathon is about 2 hours and 4 minutes. It is about 2 hours and 15 minutes for the women's marathon.
If your friend ran the Boston marathon, there is a good chance he had to qualify. That means he had to have run another marathon in a time determined by his age. That qualifying marathon may have been faster for him than his Boston time.
If he ran the 2009 marathon, use the page at [1] to look for his results. If you would like to see the qualifying times for next year's Boston marathon, see the page at [2].
Your friend's average pace would have been about 8:33 per mile.
My personal marathon best is 3:44. I wasn't injured at mile 15, but I started to slow down a lot at that point.

BOSTON MARATHON?
i can currently run the Boston marathon qualifying pace for about half a marathon. do i have enough time to get into shape by january to qualify?
This is for avid fan of judas, ive ran six to ten miles a couple times a week over the last two years to stay in shape. ive recently timed myself for thirteen miles twice and saw improvement on my pace from seven forty to seven mins per mile. then i researched the qualifying pace for the Boston marathon and found it to be 7:15 approx. since then ive asked a few people and im scheduled to run ten miles three times a week and a 15 mile run later on. my email is kalaroche@hotmail.com if you could give me any tips or anything, thanks
Answer: No not really, but it's well worth the effort if you try.
I forgot to mention something, please check with your doctor and get his/her approval first before running an entire marathon. I know that a lot of training is involved. You may or may not be ready. You didn't state your running history, your "best time", is this your 1'st, 2'nd or 3'rd time running a half marathon, ran any others? 5K's, 10K's, etc.??
I'm an avid runner and have been a runner for 14 years. Have had injuries from trying to do to much and have learned a lot over the years.
Try this website. Great tips and advice.

How long will it take for me to qualify BOSTON MARATHON?
I finished a Half-Marathon in 102 minutes. This half-Marathon is my first half-marathon. How long will it take for me to train myself to be a Boston marathon Qualifier?
My qualify time is 3:10, that is 190 minutes. I am 22, and train about 30 miles per week
Answer: Assuming you do the long runs, your half marathon time is roughly equivalent to a 3:40 marathon. That means you need to take 30 minutes off your marathon time.
Training 30 miles a week won't get you to 3:10 unless you are unusally talented. There are different philosophies about how much mileage is needed to race the marathon. My experience is that 3:10 requires at least 50 miles per week. Naturally, you can not just go from 30 to 50 overnight.
The best marathon training book for racing is written by Pete Pfitzinger. It's called Advanced Marathoning. Here's a link to the book on Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Marathoning-Pete-Pfitzinger/dp/0736034315/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-5469237-0244136?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180123468&sr=1-1
Despite the title, this book is appropriate for anyone at any level who is interested in training to race, not just complete, a marathon. This book differs from others in that it not only gives you a training plan but it explains why you do the different runs. If you are serious and follow the training suggestions in this book, you can probably get to 3:10 with a years worth of training. The reason it will take that long is that
is that it is difficult to run an all out performance and get a PR if you race, not just complete, more than 2 marathons a year. I think it will take at least two efforts to gain the experience and fitness to achieve a Boston qualifying time.

Am I allowed to run the last 6 miles of the BOSTON MARATHON with my sister?
My sister is a student at Boston College and is running the marathon as a part of the campus school team, meaning she did not have to qualify. It is her first time running a marathon, and she was told that she can have someone run with her from mile 20 (at BCs campus) to the finish, and she asked me to run that with her. Am I really allowed to do this?
Answer: Who told her you could run with her? You might check with the head of the campus school team or with the Boston marathon organizers. I would think it would be problematic if suddenly at the 20 mile mark the race doubled in size because someone was allowed to run with a participant.

How to train for the BOSTON MARATHON in a 2 year span?
Im currently 16 years old and a junior in high school. I do track and xc. I love running, and its been my dream to run the Boston marathon forever. I want to run it when Im 18, in my freshman year of college. I have no idea how to train for it though.. I have 2 years to get ready for it, what should I do? any advice or help would be appreciated.
Answer: This is the Boston Athletic Club (the people who run the marathon) site for training. http://www.bostonmarathon.org/BostonMarathon/MarathonTraining.asp
Also know that you need to run a 3:40:59 marathon to qualify for Boston and I seem to recall that so many people qualify to run Boston they have a lottery system to determine the runners. I believe if you run for a charity you get with no qualifier.
Good luck!

what is a good place to stay in boston during marathon weekend in april?

Answer: You need to act FAST!
All of the hotels are on the Boston Athletic Association's list of places to stay are sold out!
The list will give you an idea of the prices (ouch!), but you need to find a plan B, like Priceline.com or Travelocity to find a hotel as close to Boston as you can. Of course, there will be cancellations, so you may still want to register with the official channels.

The wheelchair division for the BOSTON MARATHON is 26.2 miles long. What was the average speed of the winner?
The winning time for the mens wheelchair division of the 2005 Boston marathon in Massachusetts was 1 hour, 24 minutes, and 11 seconds.
How do I find the mph? average speed >
Answer: Convert 11 seconds into .18333 minutes (11/60)
Divide the total minutes by the distance to get how many minutes it took him to go a mile
Then divide 60 (minutes in an hour) by the minutes it took him to go one mile
It took him 84.18333 minutes divided by 26.2 miles, so he did each mile in an average of 3.2131042 minutes
60 minutes divided by 3.2131042 minutes per mile is 18.6735307 MPH

I need some advice on running the BOSTON MARATHON?
Im an overweight diabetic who has always wanted to run the Boston marathon.. for the past few months ive gotten into a new routine of working out 3x a week.. I was wondering if you had any tips on what would make this run a little easier being a diabetic and all.
Answer: In the early stages, the main thing is to establish a regular sustainable routine and not get injured when you're at your most vulnerable. Your body is going to simply take time to start adapting to things, and it's perfectly fine to do stuff as a walk or run-walk early on to help it.
After you've been training for awhile, you can start to think more about increasing mileage, and training for things like half and eventually full marathons.
Qualifying for Boston can be pretty darn tough these days, and there are lots of people who train very hard for years who never achieve it. It can be a pretty tight standard. They do allow some charity entries every year though, so even if you never qualify, there are other ways to do it.
Anyway, I'd break your goal down into smaller stages, and take things one at a time. If you can eventually work towards completing a marathon -- any marathon, and one that doesn't have a tight prior qualifying time required like Boston -- you should be pretty darn proud of yourself.
The vast majority of the population wouldn't even be able to walk a half marathon without suffering.
Anyway, I'd probably get on the boards at Runner's World, especially the Beginners board, where you'll probably find lots of others like you and can ask for advice.
You'll probably want a book or two, and might at some point once ready want to look into a training program or two when you want to go after a marathon. There are some places like Team in Training where you charity fund raise in exchange for good training, and there are usually local running groups or clubs that will help with marathon training programs and group runs, perhaps for a relatively small fee, if you'd rather not fund raise.
But I'd keep in mind that Boston in particular requires qualifying and that can be darn tough to do, and there are lots of other stages to go through first if you ever do want to try to qualify.

How can I cut my marathon time to qualify for Boston?
I am currently at about 4:00 for a marathon. At my age I need to cut my time down to under 3:20 to qualify for the Boston marathon. How can I work to speed up my time. I know running faster, doing fartlyk work, etc. Any other suggestions. I have cut about 20 minutes off my marathon time in the last 10 months.
Answer: Cutting that much off your time in 10 months may be overly optomistic
To cut 40 minutes off your time, you have to cut about 90 seconds per mile off your average pace.
At some point in your training you should start running your target pace over an extended distance. Maybe only 5 miles at first then extend it up to at least 10 miles and maybe 15.
The year I ran my marathon PR, in the last month before the race, I did one workout of 15 miles, on the track, at my target pace, checking every quarter mile to make sure I was running an even pace. Note: Some people thought it was a crazy workout, but on race day I was at or better than my target pace for 26 consecutive miles.
