BASEBALL; A Rough First Start for Darvish, but He Still Wins
ARLINGTON, TEXAS — Ichiro Suzuki was impressed by Yu Darvish, even after the Japanese ace struggled early in his major-league debut with the Texas Rangers. Suzuki and the Seattle Mariners jumped out to a quick four-run lead before Darvish settled down and got some help from his offense, as the Rangers battled back for an 11-5 victory Monday. - By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Could the Seattle MARINERS still have a chance to get Adrian Gonzalez?
I saw an article that said Adrian isnt untouchable this offseason and it sounds like the Mariners are talking to the padres. Could it happen? Also an article today said the Mariners are possibly after Adam laroche. What about that happening?
Answer: Nope.
No one has a shot at him fr 1 1/2 years... if SD doesn't redo his contract before then or figure out a way to keep him on the open market...
Jed Hoyer isn't an idiot, and he won't trade Adrian until the trade deadline a year and a half from now... that's when he will have the most value fr a team looking for that extra chip... maybe they consider it next year if Gonzales expresses interest.
Fr a club that want's to keep under 40 mil, a guy like Gonzales is a must keep. He isn't for trade, there is a lot of smoke and mirrors right now in the rumor mill.
Maybe they are interested in LaRoche... that makes sense... I would give Mike Carp a shot if I was them.

In 1500, what did Portuguese MARINERS discover while attempting to find a favorable wind around Africa?
In 1500, what did Portuguese Mariners discover while attempting to find a favorable wind around Africa?
Answer: they didn't discover the cape of good hope! they passed through it in 1498, if i am not mistaken. in 1500, they discovered Brazil. it was april, 22 of 1500. and Pedro Álvares Cabral was the one who discovered. and the land belonged to them thanks to the Tordesilhas treat, which shared America between Spain and Portugal.
EDIT: whoever gave me thumbs down definately knows nothing about history. and for you who did it: go to history classes, for begginers. the portuguese, already knew that the Cape of good hope existed, they just have never been able to pass through it. they didn't discover it, they passed through it. it was called "cabo das Tormentas" ("storm cape" or something like that), because the sea is too angry there, and when they passed it for the forst time, they changed the name to "cabo da boa esperança" (cape of good hope).

How long will it take the MARINERS to win a world series?
I just graduated my freshman year In highschool and the Mariners are my favorite team and Im wondering if they will win one before I go off to college.
Answer: They're not in a position to do it anytime soon. The Mariners need some time to build up their farm system. I think they're ranked 16th amongst farm systems by baseball prospectus, and have 3 of the top 100 prospects in their system.
They could, of course, just try to buy up a bunch of free agents and win within Ichiro's career, but their last crop of big free agents (Figgins, Lee, Bradley, Griffey) did such a poor job that such an attempt would do more harm than good for their chances.
@TSN - Lee did well and Griffey was about what you would expect... but the end result of their 2010 acquisitions (which were not limited to the above four) was a 101 loss season. The point is those acquisitions were expensive and ultimately harmed the franchise.

Why didnt the MARINERS shift King Felix between reliever and starter like the Yanks did to Joba?
Judging from todays game thats the route the Mariners should have taken.
Answer: that's the route the Mariners should have taken with Felix? Based on today's game? That's a joke right?
Felix pitched a complete game victory giving up 1 run and 9 Ks, has a 3.01 ERA at the allstar break with 122 Ks on the season.
Felix has never been a reliever, and as a starter he is 64-46 with a 3.40 career ERA in 5 1/2 years, and this year he will exceed 1000 career Ks.
The yankees have killed the beginning of joba's career cuz they've shifted him back and forth between being a starter or reliever the past 3 years. Joba would have been a better overall pitcher if the club would of given him a specific job to prepare for while he was with the big league club.

What will it take for the MARINERS to fire Bill Bavasi?
This guy is ruining the Mariners! I will be a fan for life, but I dont see us getting out of the cellar anytime soon with this guy in charge!
Answer: If Bavasi is unable to sign Barry Zito or trade for an ace instead of getting all of these no. 3 and no. 4 pitchers, the front office will realize that Bavasi is not agressive towards acquiring elite players which will probably lead to his firing by season's end.
Obviously the M's need starting pitching and I think the same thing is going to happen this year that happened last year. Obviously last year he waited until their was little to no starting pitching left and ended up overpaying a no. 3 or no. 4 picther (Jarrod Washburn). He started last year by signing a position player (Kenji Johjima) and this year (Jose Guillen) before making a move for a top tier starting pitcher, which is what the offseason goal was and is now.
Bavasi may have made a mistake in going after Jose Vidro who will eat up a piece of the payroll bigger than the contributions he will bring to the team. Vidro will probably do the same thing he did last year which was complain about what the team is doing wrong. He might end up being a distraction, but who knows, he could have another .310 15HR 80RBI season.
When you look at those mistakes and what he has given us in our starting rotation (A no. 3 in Batista a no. 3 in Ramirez and Washburn from last season's free agent crop another no.3) you can expect he will be fired.
Oh yeah, and he also traded Shin Soo Choo for Ben Broussard who will probably end up being traded for little in return. Choo was playing well in Cleveland and showed us that Bavasi could have let a young star slip away. Another young star who was given away was Rafael Soriano (Traded to ATL for Horacio Ramirez). This guy who has nasty stuff, and possibly could have filled a spot in the starting rotation or have another dominant year as a setup man, was traded for a no. 3 pitcher. No. 3 PITCHERS DON'T WIN DIVISION TITLES OR EVEN PLAYOFF BERTHS. What Bavasi did here was fill a hole while opening up another one.
I would say this is enough examples to show what it takes to get a GM fired.
The only way he keeps his job is if the M's find their way into the playoffs.

How much more failure before the MARINERS leave town?
Its the same thing for the Mariners. They build a great team, and then drop 100 games. How much longer will they have to lose until they leave town?
Answer: It's not so much a function of whether they win or lose...it's how many people go to the games. In pro sports you only need look at the Chicago Cubs in baseball or Toronto Maple Leafs in hockey. Both teams consistently pack their venues in spite of the on-field or on-ice product not being to great.
Seattle IS a sports town-in spite of the exit of the Supersonics-which was mainly over funding for a new, needed arena to play in.Seattle attendance was better in 2010 in both in terms of total persons in the seats and percentage of seats filled than the Tampa Bay Rays-who won the American League East.Seattle is still making a lot of money...moving a team doesn't make a franchise win-it just theoretically makes more money. Not to mention to move a franchise you have to have a place to move it to-those are few and far between. They aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

What year did the MARINERS break the 1927 Yankees MLB record for most runs scored in a season?
I remember one of the Mariners teams set a new record for runs scored but i forgot what year it was..
Anyone remember?
It was a Mariners team with great offense & horrible pitching!
Answer: I'm still trying to figure out what record you are talking about. The all-time record is 1,220, by the 1894 Braves. The "modern" record is the 1931 (not 1927) Yankees, with 1,067. The post-war record is 1,027, by the 1950 Red Sox, and the 'current era' record is 1,009, by the 1999 Indians.
The most that the Mariners have ever scored in a season is 993, in 1996, when they also gave up 850. They finished with an 85-76 record, good for second in the division.

I want to work for the seattle MARINERS in the front office but i dont know what i should major in in college?
Hey i am planning on going to college and become an intern for the seattle Mariners and i was just wondering like what type of major should i choose so that i can work my way up to working in the front office with all of the important people please tell me what i should major in.
Answer: I am an NHL person myself, but some of my experience might be useful! Most of the people working for the Red Wings have a lot of game relevant experience. They were players, they were coaches, they were scouts, they were team doctors-- whatever. They have to know the game to get up there and their experience needs to speak for itself. Some sort of sports management degree, or maybe even just a business degree I bet would be helpful. But you have to be prepared for the possibility you'll end up working for a different team if the Mariners don't offer you a job, and someone else does. Food has to go on the table even when you're a traitor. :P
Why don't you look up their present front office folks on wikipedia or something and see what they studied?

What new knowledge and technologies enabled 15th century MARINERS to make long overseas voyages?
What new knowledge and technologies enabled 15th century Mariners to make long overseas voyages? Where did much of this technology originate?
Answer: Columbus and Dead Reckoning (DR) navigation
At the end of the fifteenth century, celestial navigation was just being developed in Europe, primarily by the Portuguese. Prior to the development of celestial navigation, sailors navigated by "deduced" (or "dead") reckoning, hereafter called DR. This was the method used by Columbus and most other sailors of his era. In DR, the navigator finds his position by measuring the course and distance he has sailed from some known point. Starting from a known point, such as a port, the navigator measures out his course and distance from that point on a chart, pricking the chart with a pin to mark the new position. Each day's ending position would be the starting point for the next day's course-and-distance measurement.
In order for this method to work, the navigator needs a way to measure his course, and a way to measure the distance sailed. Course was measured by a magnetic compass, which had been known in Europe since at least 1183. Distance was determined by a time and speed calculation: the navigator multiplied the speed of the vessel (in miles per hour) by the time traveled to get the distance.
In Columbus's day, the ship's speed was measured by throwing a piece of flotsam over the side of the ship. There were two marks on the ship's rail a measured distance apart. When the flotsam passed the forward mark, the pilot would start a quick chant, and when it passed the aft mark, the pilot would stop chanting. (The exact words to such a chant are part of a lost oral tradition of medieval navigation). The pilot would note the last syllable reached in the chant, and he had a mnemonic that would convert that syllable into a speed in miles per hour. This method would not work when the ship was moving very slowly, since the chant would run to the end before the flotsam had reached the aft mark.
Speed (and distance) was measured every hour. The officer of the watch would keep track of the speed and course sailed every hour by using a toleta, or traverse board. This was a peg-board with holes radiating from the center along every point of the compass. The peg was moved from the center along the course traveled, for the distance made during that hour. After four hours, another peg was used to represent the distance made good in leagues during the whole watch. At the end of the day, the total distance and course for the day was transferred to the chart.
Columbus was the first sailor (that we know of) who kept a detailed log of his voyages, but only the log of the first voyage survives in any detail. It is by these records that we know how Columbus navigated, and how we know that he was primarily a DR navigator.
Since DR is dependent upon continuous measurements of course and distance sailed, we should expect that any log kept by a DR navigator would have these records; and this is exactly what Columbus's log looks like. If Columbus had been a celestial navigator, we would expect to see continuous records of celestial observations; but Columbus's log does not show such records during either of the transatlantic portions of the first voyage.
It has been supposed by some scholars that Columbus was a celestial navigator anyway, and kept his celestial records hidden for some unknown reason. (This supposition is necessary to support some theories of the first landfall.) But this hypothesis does not hold water. Columbus's ships were steered by helmsmen at a tiller, below the quarterdeck. The helmsmen could not see the sky, so the only way they could keep a course was by magnetic compass. The officer of the deck had his own compass, and would call down course changes as necessary. This means that the courses used aboard ship (and in the log) would have been magnetic courses.
Now suppose that Columbus was making unrecorded celestial checks on his latitude as he sailed west on his first voyage. In that case, as magnetic variation pulled his course southward from true west, he would have noticed the discrepancy from his celestial observations, and he would have corrected it. In other words, if Columbus were a celestial navigator, we would expect to see a series of small intermittent course corrections in order to stay at a celestially determined latitude. These corrections should occur about every three or four days, perhaps more often.
But that is not what the log shows. On the first voyage westbound, Columbus sticks doggedly to his (magnetic) westward course for weeks at a time. Only three times does Columbus depart from this course: once because of contrary winds, and twice to chase false signs of land southwest. In none of these cases does he show any desire to return to a celestially-determined latitude. This argument is a killer for the celestial hypothesis, and was first made by Rear Admiral Bob McNitt (USN) in 1992.
Well then, could Columbus have corrected his compasses by checking them against the stars -- and thus avoid the need for course correc

MARINERS Extend Home Scoreless Streak To 29 Innings, Lose ...
On Friday, April 13, the Seattle Mariners lost to the Oakland Athletics 4-0 in the Mariners' 2012 home opener.
How will the MARINERS do if they make it to the playoffs?
I think if the Mariners make it to the playoffs they will go with a three man pitching rotation featuring felix hernandez, cliff lee, and erik bedard if healthy. this pitching tandom in the playoffs is a nightmare for any team. i believe they can walk through the playoff this year (if they can get there first). i am a huge Mariners fan so i am really hoping this is the year ken griffey jr get his much deserved world series.
Go Ms!
Answer: obviously injuries will play a major role in the season but once a team gets there, pitching is the most important factor. I don't know if Bedard will contribute anything this year but last year the M's had the best ERA and essentially the best pitching in the AL. Hernandez + Lee = world series if they make the playoffs.

Who will fill the empty holes for the Seattle MARINERS?
There are 4 main positions that the Seattle Mariners need to fix this off season by either trades or free agent signings... 1st base, 3rd base, dh and left field. Who will the Mariners acquire to fill these holes for next season? Or also who have you heard that Seattle might be interested in?
Answer: I think the Mariners will look for internal solutions to at least two of the four positions you mention and look to upgrade the offense at 1B/DH while spending the majority of their budget on locking up Felix Hernandez long-term.
LF: Michael Saunders. They'll give him another chance to hit big league pitching with a revamped approach. If he struggles, he probably gets sent to the minors with Ryan Langerhans seeing most of the time in left. In either case, Bill Hall could also see some time in left against LHP. I've heard the name Jason Bay mentioned here, but I don't think that's at all likely since Bay is a horrible defender and the Mariners have shown a preference for defense.
3B: Matt Tuiasosopo. Yeah, it might be risky having another rookie start, but he's looked a lot better recently, and though he's definitely a downgrade from Beltre, could provide a lot of value at league minimum salary. Jack Hannahan could also see some time here, especially against RHP, and a Hall/Hannahan platoon isn't out of the question if Tuiasosopo struggles.
1B/DH: Russell Branyan will most likely be brought back, and will split time between the two positions in order to keep from re-injuring his back. I think the M's will sign someone like Nick Johnson or Carlos Delgado to a 1-year deal with lots of incentives to play wherever Branyan doesn't. Splitting time between 1B and DH should keep them from getting injured, but Griffey might be brought back as a bench bat and to fill in at DH if one of them does go on the DL.

What will help get the MARINERS back on track?
What will help get the Mariners back on track? It almost seems like an entire new season and new team is what is needed. What do you guys think? Do you think having Bavasi gone will help?
Answer: Firing Bavasi is only the first step in what must occur for the Ms to contend again. Now that there is a new GM, he must immediately fire Manager John McLaren and name someone he wants. It must be made known to all other MLB teams who will be available in trades and what is expected in return. The Mariners devistated their farm system in acquiring players that aren't producing (especially Beddard). They must get players that will be MLB ready in the near future. Also, it is a well known fact that the only ones who want to keep catcher Johjima are the team's owners. He may be the key to several trades which could improve the team right away. I think now that the first step has been taken, you'll see an almost total turnover of this underachieving team. The only player that probably is untouchable is Ichiro.
