When will the US Federal Census for 1940 be released?
Sometime this year, right? April 1, 2010 is Census Day -- does that mean the 1940 will be released on that date?
Dang, I thought it was an even 70 years. Two more years before I can see my dads name on the Census! I can wait.
Answer: Bryce,
There is a lot of misinformation online about the 1940 census and when it will be available to the public and in what form.
The information you need is at:
http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/census/1940/
which is the website of the National Archives and Records Administration.
The release date is April 2nd, 2012 (a Monday). There will be NO film....it is being digitized and will be available online on anyone's computer hooked up to the Internet.
There will be no name index initially, but if you know the location of your targets, you **will** be able to find the Enumeration District number that they are in, and be able to see online the schedules from that district on day one when it is accessible.
I have produced 3 databases to make 1940 geographical searches possible when this census becomes public: a conversion database that converts a 1930 ED # to a 1940 ED #; a database showing the definition of the census district boundaries; and a database for larger urban areas where one can go from an address to a census district number. Steve Morse has helped with this project, provided server space for these databases, and has coded search engines for them, and these utilities can be found at his free website, stevemorse.org, in the census folder.
Good luck with your searches

The "govt" has a "rule" that will not allow the public to view the 1940 CENSUS until 2012, why?
The govt claims to be protecting the privacy of the people listed in the 1940 census enumeration as its reason for not releasing it until 2012, while allowing the privacy of the people listed in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census enumerations to be violated.
1. What can be done to protect the privacy of the people from the 1910 - 1930 census?
2. Can the 1910 -1930 citizens sue for invasion of privacy?
3. What can be done to release all of the census enumerations without the 72 year waiting period?
4. Arent our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness denied by not allowing us access to the 1940 - 2000 enumerations?
Answer: Uh... you can't have it both ways here. Census has been ruled a public record after that specific number of years; thus eliminating the need to protect the "privacy" of 72 + year old information for people who will be mostly DEAD by then.
Uh...what invasion? Everyone knows that the census information will be a public record at some point
Nothing; again, you can't have total privacy and total freedom to this information
How could a census record deny you L, L, POH? No.

When will the 1940 census be available to view on ancestry.com?
Answer: The 1940 US census will be made public in April 2012. According to the Ancestry message board, "You will not need Ancestry for the 1940 U.S. Fed census. My understanding is that NARA is indexing and digitizing the Census even as we speak and intends to make the 1940 census available on its own website for FREE. They do suggest that you might want to start to determine the enumeration district(s) where your ancestors lived in the event that a name search does not initially reveal your ancestors and you have to browse the images."

When the 1940 US Census is released to Ancestry.com, it wont be indexed right away, correct?
I assume youll need to know the address and/or ED/AD in order to find your ancestors household early on? How long do you think it should take for them to get the census indexed?
Answer: Free B,
Ancestry.com bought the 1940 images and they will be delivered to them on April 2nd. It will take them a little time to actually put them on their website. In the meantime, the images will be available at the NARA website (designed by Archives.com) at 1940census.archives.gov.
There will be no name index available on April 2nd, but you can use our locational aids right now to find the enumeration district so you can find people on the first day. Use first our tutorial at:
http://www.stevemorse.org/census/quiz.php to see all the tools available on the One Step website and the NARA website. This week I passed 1,000 urban area files for street indexes that will be used to find the census district number.
Ancestry has indicated that their images and their name index will be free, once online, through 2013. I expect them to roll the states out slowly.
The name indexing project sponsored by FamilySearch/Archives.com/findmypast is NOT connected to the Ancestry name indexing. It will be done by volunteers and there is a major push to get, perhaps, as many as 250,000 people doing indexing.
The current estimates for a complete name index is about 6 months...but if you have a location, you can find people on April 2nd.

Note: "Marci knows best" is absolutely wrong. No one is name indexing the census until the 72 year privacy period expires on April 2nd, 2012 (actually April 1st but that's a Sunday and the National Archives will not release the census that day). That goes for Ancestry.com who won't even have the population images until that time, or FamilySearch (who are giving other indexing material right now to 1940 volunteers), or even Archives.com that will have the images but are prohibited from using them for name indexing purposes before April 2nd. Only certain people on Archives.com, cleared by the Census Bureau can work with the material and they and the company by the terms of their agreement are prohibited from starting a name index until April 2nd.

When will the 1940 CENSUS records come out?
I need to do genealogy and I need to look at the 1940 census for answers.
Answer: The "census date" of the 1940 census was April 1st, 1940.
Due to a law passed in 1978, there is a confidentiality period established for US Censuses based on agreements between the Census Bureau and the National Archives. Presently that agreement is a 72 year privacy period.
Thus the 1940 census should become public on April 1st, 2012. However, that falls on a Sunday, and the National Archives is closed. So it very well might be April 2nd, 2012 before we get to look at it.
The 1940 census is being digitized, and will be put online when it opens. There will be no film.
There is a way of finding out information from any closed census for a fee... of $65 presently. It's called an "Age Search" by the Census Bureau but you must meet stringent requirements, and the record must pertain in some way directly to you. You will only get a transcription with the name of your target and the age, and possibly the name of the other members of the family.

Answer: There won't be anywhere you can find it until (April, I think) 2012. They keep a tight lid on the records until it's time to release them. It will be even longer until you can get the 1950 and 1960 census records.

1940 CENSUS?
Does anyone know when the 1940 US census will be made available to the public for research?!
72-100 years seems way too long, but hopefully 2012 is when it will be, thats not too far. Figures it would be the one that I really wanted. Why dont they just make it so if you have a background check you can search for what you want or something!!!!!!!!!!!!
Answer: Shirley's right. It's currently scheduled for release in April, 2012. But there is a movement in Congress to change the privacy laws on the census and move it from a 72 year privacy period to a 100 year privacy wall. So it's possible that we won't see it until 2040. what data is on the 1940 CENSUS?
I wanted to know what columns of information are on the 1940 census forms to be released in April 2011 ... and how useful it will be to genealogists?
Answer: I worked in the reference department of a library with a genealogy section.
First you'll have year on top of page and address.
You will have the name of the head of house hold and their age as well names and ages of spouse, children and other members of household, like aunts or parents.
Occupation is listed. At the end you'll find their parents name, place of birth and the language they spoke.
This is a lot to work with to cross reference information to make an accurate family tree. It links you to the next generation and the next census to study.
It is a great tool. You can access it on microfilm at your library & copy or get computer access from Heritage Quest. Good luck.
