What to do during a tornado?
I live in Dallas, Texas and its been raining for about ten minutes now. Hail the size of quarters - and Im pretty sure a tornado is on its way VERY soon. What do I do? Where do I hide? How do I protect my family? (mom, dad, me, grandpa, and cat) we do not have a basement. We have four bedrooms, a laundry room, two bathrooms. What do I do? Please help Im thirteen and have no clue as to what I should do...
Answer: If you are in Dallas, Texas, you will not get a tornado. There is a tornado watch for basically north east Texas. However, the chance for tornadoes tonight in Texas is very low.
If the weather should get severe enough that you need to take shelter, remain calm. If possible get to the lowest level of the building/house and/or an interior room or area. This would be an area with no windows nor walls that share with the outside. Mobile homes/Double wides/Trailers are not safe places to be during a tornado or straight line winds. If you can, get to a sturdier building. If you can not get to a sturdier shelter, then find a low ditch or culvert and lay flat as can be face down. Do not try to outrun a tornado in a vehicle. Some tornadoes have been known to travel up to 70MPH. Remember, REMAIN CALM!

See that big red dot in North Texas? That's us. Texas gets more tornadoes in a year than any other state, and many of them are in the DFW area.
Just because of this does not mean you shouldn't live here. The chances of getting hit by a tornado are extremely low no matter where you live. Instead of getting scared, have a little fun watching the storms when spring rolls around next year :)

Dallas, Texas Tornado: Warnings Issued As Twisters Hit State
Regions of Texas received tornado warnings on Tuesday, as tornadoes touched down in the state.
Anyone live in Texas?
My partner and I live in Ireland ( im Canadian, hes Irish) and his job is transferring him to America in November. His company has offices all over the country so at least he gets to pick where he moves too. He left the decision up to me. None of the options were close to a beach ( darn) but I happily decided on Dallas, Texas because I LOVE super hot summers ( i know, im crazy lol) and the winters are mild. Its also a 6- hour drive to the beach ( according to google maps; correct me if I am wrong). I also picked Dallas because ( now this is really going to sound crazy) I LOVE thunderstorms. A thunderstorm to me is like Christmas to a child! I have always been really fascinated by them, especially tornados. So my question is:
If I spent one year in Dallas, how often might I experience severe thunderstorms. What are the chances I will see a tornado? How often have you seen one? ( even if you are not from Dallas or Texas)?
Am I old enough to be living away from my parents? I have been living on my own for 8 years now and living on a different continent as them for 5 years. I think I can handle it.
I get a lot of people asking me why Dallas? First, this is only for one year; its not forever! Second, Dallas was the only city we could move to in Texas.
So why Texas?
- close city to the beach ( even if its 5-6 hour drive away from Dallas)
- Hot all year. Some people complained about the mild winters. Well, im orginally from Ottawa, Canada where my winters are -30 degrees C and sometimes colder. We get snow for 6 months of the year and in Galway, Ireland it rains every day and rarely gets hot, even in the middle of the summer. I love super hot hot hot weather!
- I wanted to live in a big city
- My grandpa, who died before I meet him, grew up in Texas.
There were other options all over the country, however the jobs on the east and west coast were all taken. This left the middle and northern states. Some of them were right in tornado alley but I didnt pick Dallas just for thunderstorms or tornados. If that was the case I would have picked Oklahoma City! :)
Answer: you'll love it down there lot's of jobs very cheap to live the summers are great stays 60 70 80 year round my highest utility bill was around 70 dollars you get a lot of tornado's most are mild I go out and play in them all the time you just have to watch out for the hail the Dallas Zoo is awesome your right next to Arlington 6 flags over Texas worlds tallest roller coaster giant water slides Texas has all climates beautiful sandy beaches desert and forest I love the motorcycle park we used to take the ATV's out and go riding all the time Dallas at night is beautiful they light the city and block the cars so you can only walk in some section you Planet Hollywood Dallas Hard rock Cafe Dallas

If a category 5 hit the Texas Gulf Coast, what impact would it have on the Dallas area?
Okay, Ive asked a question simulair to this before and I got no straight answer on this. I have an extreme fear of tornados and I know that hurricanes can spawn tornados. Could a cat 5 hurricane still be a hurrican this far in-land? Or would it just be a tropical storm?
Answer: It's hard to get a straight answer because the category does not really express the extent of the hurricance, but rather its maximum intensity. A very widespead category 5 hurricane could potentially still be a hurricane in Dallas. Tornados are extremely likely in any case, since hurricanes and tropical storms are formed from bands of thunderstorms.

About relocating to Dallas or Houston Texas?
Hello,
My husband and I want to relocate to Texas, but we can not decide whether we want to move to Dallas or Houston. So far we want to move to a place that has a lot of job opportunities. A lot of things for our kids to do, and a Metro area that does not require us to drive all the time. As for storms. I do not want to LIVE in a area that has tornadoes, or flood a lot due to Hurricanes. Dont get me wrong. I would choose a hurricane any day over a Tornado, because at least you get a notice before it hits the area. Anyway what do you think. We want to buy a house in a city thats more affordable. I looked at both Dallas and Houston, and they both have great homes with affordable prices. My main concern is moving to a place that has lots of transportation, because my mom may come live with us too. Thank you so much for all your advice.
Answer: I would do Dallas. Houston's traffic is very busy, and their summers are unbearable. Dallas has warm summers too, but not as bad. I also think there is more to do in Dallas. However, you would be closer to the ocean in Houston.

TORNADO IN DALLAS TEXAS?
Does anybody know if there was a Tornado in dallas texas this past couple of weeks? Thx
Answer: The Dallas area had a warning but I do not believe one touched down. Furthur north in the more northern part of Texas and Southern Oklahoma, there were a couple of small ones that touched down, I think. I know there was one in Southern Oklahoma but I seem to believe there was one around Grayson County somewhere. If there wasn't, there was definitely a warning. I believe that I read somewhere that the reason this person thought that Dallas never gets hit by tornadoes is because of the heat that is trapped in all the sidewalks, roads, concrete, etc. I can't remember where I read this but it makes sense. Hope this helps! God Bless!*

Answer: Those are all excellent questions. It's very Smart to find out all you can about an area before you move there.
The best thing about Texas is the friendly people. They will speak to you even if they don't know you. There are also a lot of fun activities in Dallas. It mostly depends on what kind of things you like to do.
The worst thing about Texas is the heat in July, August and early September. Otherwise, the weather is really nice here.

Haha okay, Im convinced, I think Ill go
:)
Answer: It was 73 today, temps vary widely this time of year. Could be 80 tomorrow and 45 the next day. Average is about 70 degrees.
You don't worry about tornadoes. You people are so paranoid about them. You have a much better chance of dying in a car crash on the way here than you do of being killed in a tornado.
I've lived here for 21 years. That's a lot more than two weeks. I've never had a tornado come within 20 miles of my house. If one comes you go get into a closet, or bathroom. It's utterly stupid to worry about it.

Answer: Compared with other states, Texas ranks number 1 for frequency of tornadoes, number 1 for number of deaths, number 1 for injuries and number 1 for cost of damages. When we compare these statistics to other states by the frequency per square mile, Texas ranks number 10 for the frequency of tornadoes, number 16 for fatalities, number 21 for injuries per area, and number 21 for costs per area based on data from 1950 - 1995. In 1970, Texas had a population of 11,198,655 and between 1950 and 1995 Texas had 5,722 tornadoes. This ranks Texas number 1 in tornadoes by state. How common are critical tornadoes in Dallas, TX?
I am looking at a lot of job opportunities in Dallas, TX. I lived in Texas for a year in Austin when I was 10 and I remember Tornado destruction being a routine problem. Is that the case in Austin? How worried should I be every time it starts storming?
Answer: Tornado watches are common in Texas but they don't bother me much. I've been living in Texas for 30 years and the most I've been affected by a tornado was my backyard fence got blown down once. Whenever the weather seems threatening I watch local weather on tv and they give accurate reports about where any possible tornadoes might be. There are also tornado warning sirens that go off whenever winds get too strong. I wouldn't pass up a job opportunity because of fear of tornadoes.
