Answer: There aren't any. I'd live in Texoma...near the Oklahoma border. I've lived in Wichita Falls my entire life and it's a nice town. About 110,000 and it's growing due to the AF base. Now we did have a tornado back in '79...but there have been only a few since. Nothing major, and no real damage. The fear of tornados shouldn't stop you from moving anywhere. Move into a house with a basement or shelter if that makes you feel safer.

Answer: Austin Texas is in the far southern tip of Tornado Alley. Being that it is closer to warm moist air coming from the Gulf, the needed cold dry air from the north is not readily available. This means that tornadoes there are rare. This, however, does not mean they never occur there.

With the recent tornados in US and fires in Texas, have any of you ever had to evacuate your animals?

If so, why and how did you do it?
Answer: In 2007 central Indiana had a horrible flood. I work, board, and live in Martinsville where a large amount of damage was done. our barn took on 5 to 6 inches of water and our pastures looked like ponds. Our neighbors, about 3 miles away are on much higher ground and we moved 23 horses from our barn to their pastures. My boss and I rode my mare and her gelding and ponied the horses, two at a time the three miles to their pasture. Our neighbors and a few strangers helped as well. The water had a current and we were advised not to try to trailer them incase the trailer tires cut loose. It took all day but we got it done. After the water subsided, we both trailered and ponied the horse's back to our (now ravished) barn. Took us a few weeks to get everything back in order. We lost hundreds of dollars of hay, feed, and bedding. Luckily our tack was safe. It was not fun and I don't wish it on anyone. But it's what we had to do to keep the horses safe.

Answer: Yes, that part of Texas is tornado prone. Please don't let that effect your decision to move. Even in the worst tornado prone areas the risk to an individual is so low it isn't even worth thinking about. You are much more likely to die in a traffic accident than from a tornado. O.K. that was the reassuring side, now here's the disaster monger side. One of the great disaster show favorites is a F5 twister hitting down town Dallas. Compressed between skyscrapers, winds could go over 500 mph. All the glass windows of the high rises would explode and hundreds would die. Thousand would be injured. But in reality stuff like that doesn't happen. Yellowstone won't erupt, a meteor won't hit and a big hurricane won't zero in on New Orleans. Hope I helped.

Im considering moving from Southern California to Fort Worth, Texas and Im concerned about Tornados. I have a cat and will be most likely moving into an apartment because of costs. Do all apartment complexes have a group underground shelter for when they have tornado warnings? Regarding being a Californian, Im aware of earthquakes as an issue but once you even FEEL are usually years apart. Ive lived here for 10 years and Ive only really felt anything more than 3 times. Meanwhile, I here tornados are a high-risk "only-a-matter-of-time" there. So, in my own book, tornados are a LOT more dangerous.
Answer: theres hardly ANY underground shelters in texas. Texas has solid rock about 3 feet under the surface and makes for building underground shelters and basments very difficult. Tornadoes are not a HUGE problem in DFW; it is at the bottom of tornado alley and we get only about 4 o 5 funnels that touch ground a year and only a few that cause extensive damage (nothing like you would see in the further north midwest). Its not really something you plan your life or living area around. I have always lived in a bottom apartment or known my first floor neighbors very well. Try to get a first floor apartment and if you can't get a first floor apt, make friends with your neighbors and should a storm come, ask if you can chill with them until it passes. should there be a tornado warning that threatens your area the best place (regardless of house or apartment) to go is a closet or bathroom along an inside wall. The bath tub I have been told is the safest. Grab a mattress and place it on top of you. Definitely stay away from outside walls, windows and mirrors. The main thing I would be worried about is hail, almost every storm that comes through brings hail (thunder storm season is from amrch to october) So I would probably look for an apartment with either a carport or garage. Like I said though, it is probably something you will never encounter. I have lived in central DFW all my life, and have never been affected or had any damage done to a home due to a tornado. They have come with in 6 miles of my parents house and in the 26 years that they lived here have never seen a tornado. If you do encounter one, you will have plenty of time to prepare (unlike an earthquake, lol), as they typically come with thunder storms and hail, you will have a few hours advance and the news will say tornado watch/warning; a watch means a funnel cloud is apossible, a warning means funnel clouds have been spotted and the potential for touch down is greater. If you can afford a house I would buy one anyways instead of an apartment, it will still probably be less than what you are paying now for a mortage/ rent and you can sell it for a profit later in life.
